The Basilica of Santa Maria di Campagna is a jewel of Renaissance architecture, a masterpiece of the full maturity of the Piacenza architect Alessio Tramello.
The church was built between 1522 and 1528 in order to worthily preserve the polychrome wooden image of a miraculous "Madonna della Campagnola".
The façade, geometrically clear, is a prelude to an interior full of pictorial ornaments, canvases and decorations.
Of exceptional quality is the cycle of frescoes by the painter Giovanni Antonio Sacchis, known as Pordenone, who left some of his most significant works here (1529-31). Entering on the left side you come across the painting dedicated to St. Augustine, recently restored. Following are the chapels with the stories of the Magi and Santa Caterina, commissioned to the Friulian painter by local noble families.
The work with the greatest impact, however, begun by Pordenone and completed by Bernardino Gatti known as Sojaro, is the dome. The culmination and starting point of the decoration is God the Father in the lantern; then looking down you find the Prophets and Sibyls with their penetrating "terrible glares", a distinctive trait of the author. Pordenone's activity concluded with the ovals and the frieze where religious themes alternate with pagan subjects, also using monochrome as a reference to antiquity.
Following a "recall to his homeland", Giovan Antonio Sacchis did not complete the commission for the friars of Santa Maria di Campagna, but Sojaro completed it by painting the apostles, the drum with the Stories of the Virgin and the plumes with the Evangelists.
Inside there are also works by Galeazzo, Giulio and Bernardino Campi, Camillo Procaccini, Guercino, Malosso, De Longe, Bibiena, Stern, Avanzini.

A little bit far from the city center but definitely worth the effort. An artistic and architectural gem with an important historical significance.

I walked about half and hour from the city centre to visit this work of art of religious architecture and I have to say it was absolutely worthy. Lovely exterior but the interior is just breathtaking, the frescos and specially the cúpula is one of the most beautiful pieces of religious art I have seen in my life

Outside it will not impress, but inside it is a jewel. A beautiful church, very well kept, plenty of paintings, tombs, altars, wooden sculptures. The atmosphere is typical of an Italian church still in use: imposing, charming, silent.

"just" a parish church with substantial decorations from the Farnese period. Incidentally, the starting point for one of the crusades.

This is an outstandingly beautiful church, very simple from the outside but with a wonderful interior. Modern technology has been cleverly used to enable visitors to look at the paintings of the dome on a screen and to be able to zoom in to details-much more comfortable than lying flat on one's back to look up at this remarkable work. Highly recommended.

It is very hard to decide which is the most beautiful church of Paicenza. No doubt this one is one of it. The inner decoration is just great.

While it's a bit of a hike to get to, being on the edge of the city, it is well worth the effort. This church and it's art are incredible!

Church with free entry and finely decorated interiors, not at all crowded at the time of our visit. There are also some panels with explanations of the story.
