Prominent town square in Parma, very busy cross street to the restaurants and bars area, also a meeting point for tour groups. There is a Garibaldi statute here. Not too much different from other town squares in other villages.

Filling one side of the Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi, is the Palazzo del Governatore, which dates back to the 13th century, and has served as a major government building for hundreds of years. The central bell tower, designed by engineer Gian Battista Barattieri was added in 1673, along with the ancient bell known as the "third one", that dates back to 1453. This was replaced with a copy in 1998. In 1760 the Palazzo del Governatore was restored by architect Ennemond Alexandra Petitot, giving it a kind of Neoclassical Baroque style look. Above the clock in 1760 a nitch was created and sculptor Jean-Baptiste Boudard placed a statue of the Crowned Virgin in it. In Victorian Times the Duchess Maria Alleluia in 1829 commissioned painters Lorenzo Ferrari and Luigi Pazzoni to paint large sundials on the face of the tower. Unfortunately, when we tried to visited the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art which is housed inside the building, it was closed. But we did check out the bronze statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi that stands in front of its entrance.

Tip: Take some time to examine the sundials and Longitude markings on the Tower wall

The most prominent building on Garibaldi Square is the Palazzo del Gavernatore, built in a Baroque and Neoclassical style. When? It is difficult to say because it was initially located on the other side of the square. This construction happened in the 13th century. Later, in 1606, it was rebuilt after the collapse of the clock tower. Everyone can choose a favorite year. The central yellow plastered bell tower is what draws your attention. In the middle of it is a niche, which has a crowned Virgin Mary, and above her a clock, and around her surprisingly accurate nineteenth-century sundials. It is worth comparing the two devices to see which one is more accurate, then checking your smartwatch to see if this sundial is as clever as it looks.
The building is now home to contemporary and modern art and international exhibitions. The exhibition "La Forma Dell 'Ideologoa" is currently open to visitors. In the grand floor of the building, numerous little shops are waiting for customers.

This building is located on a busy square and the sundial was the most impressive part. Many tours seem to congregate here and the cafes are more touristic than elsewhere.

With all the riches of Parma for me this palace is just average in compare with other landmarks. The palace is situated in the busiest part of the city and while the architectural design is ok in my opinion you would not lose anything is you don’t visit it

Amazing old sundial on the exterior wall facing Piazza Garibaldi, gives the time pretty accurately, tells where it is noon right now, gives the date and the time of sunrise, all from a sundial.
