The Church stood somewhat apart from its current location. At the beginning of the new time, it was demolished to form a belt of defense of the city — in those turbulent years, this was vital. 6 years later, after the end of the war, the new Duke ordered to respect the religious feelings of his subjects and restore the temple; work began in 1566, and the project was handled by the famous Italian architect Giovanni Battista Fornovo. Under his leadership, a not very large, but very pleasing to the eye building was erected with side turrets and an unexpected portal in the form of an arch, resembling not so much temples as the building of the Vienna Opera. Later, in 1681, the portal was decorated with frescoes from the lives of saints.

Unlike many churches with some baroque, some gothic, some Romanesque, this large, oval white church is all of a piece. A pleasing architectural work.

From outside nothing special, but inside it is one of the Italian wonders. Full of art work. Just to go around take you a lot of time.

This is the kind of architecture one travels to Italy for. One of the most original churches in Parma and in Italy. I recommend to compare it with Santa Maria del Quartiere.

Externally it is surprising for the complexity of its structure with apses and buttresses around the entire perimeter if we exclude the facade. Inside it has a very original oval shape and ten chapels. White dominates everything.
