Worth a quick look around the historic rooms but not much context given in English. Still, its free so cannot complain! Booking is mandatory online ahead of time- they don't allow walk-ins, regardless of how busy it is.

By all means go in & visit the historical rooms which are open to the public. They are beautiful with amazing ceilings, big chandeliers, series of paintings & tapestries on the walls.
Since this place is still the seat of the Municipality of Modena there might be some restrictions due to meetings or other activities(weddings), so check in advance.
At the time of our visit we were lucky to see & admire all the rooms

Before we stepped into the beautifully orchestrated rooms filled with stupendously decorated ceilings, charming civic paintings and superb, big tapestries, one has to acknowledge and tip your hat to the this local, called "The Land of Motors".

A pilgrimage to the sacred places of these almost mystical sights, is an obligation, let alone a birth-right. Start at the Galleria Ferrari in Maranello, where the historic cars driven in Formula One and Gran Turismo races are on display. Utter the name Maserati, and the throaty thrust of its power rings through the air, exciting and seeking envy. Not far away is the De Tomaso family museum & factory where the cars and bikes are viewed with reverence not equalled in religious places. The list goes on.... Lamborghini, Ducati...... I am all choked- up. My femme gives me that look, you know the one, half pity, half who-knows-what look.

This is a city that owes its fortune not only to its Parmesan cheese, pigs feet stuffed with sausage meat, but also the famous balsamic vinegar, all of which enhances its cultural prestige. Its an easy city to stroll through, literally divided in two by the historic Via Emilia, where traffic is diverted to allow space and freedom to pedestrians and cyclist, without doubt, the most popular means of transport.

If the great factories are on your pilgrimage trail, they are not far out of town. Take some shards of Grana cheese, and strawberries eaten al cucchiaio as an aperitif with a little balsamic vinegar . Then head back into town for more strolling, and consuming the fabric of this cultural and beautiful township.

I don't know whether we should be ashamed, but we actually did not choose to enter this place. However, we did find a nice spot at a bar opposite this building and had an apertivo while enjoying the view of it.

This is Modena's town hall, in Piazza Grande opposite the cathedral. Not only is the exterior stunning with its still-working clock tower but you can also enter several rooms which are full of paintings, for free (but due to COVID you have to book an entrance time before on-line or by phone and show your EU COVID Digital Certificate or equivalent).

We were attracted by the beautiful clock tower and the elegant exterior of the Palazzo Comunale, so we decided to explore it further. We were there on a weekday, so the entrance was free. On the second floor, the attendant showed us the directions to the state rooms and it was a really nice surprise to see such a beauty in a building where people work every day.

The story of the Siege of Modena (43-42BC) is masterfully depicted in Nicoló dell’Abate frescoes of the Hearth Room. The Room of the Old Council is also very beautiful.

It does not take long to visit the Palazzo which certainly leaves one more precious memory of gorgeous Modena.
