This is a huge, stunning building which dominates Piazza Roma. Once the residence of the duke, it is now a navy academy.

Very beautiful building. It was the palace of the Duke, now is a navy academy. The square and the fountain next to it is also very beautiful.

Lovely building. We didn’t go inside as it was Sunday and closed but it is a very impressive palace!

The Palazzo Ducale has been bastardized by the generations that assumed control once the Este family died out. It is heartbreaking to see how the rooms were ruined with modern lighting, pressed flooring, cheap furniture. And half of the rooms you visit are filled with Italian military mementos, honors and photos. It is a waste of two hours.

Wouldn't and didn't go inside though. I think it is the home of public services now, but even if not, we 've seen one too many similar Palazzi in Italy (but also in Spain, France and elsewhere). It's an impressive building though.

We were told you can only enter the palace with a prearranged tour. We walked by the outside instead.

We did not enter, based on advice from previous reviewers, but found the outside really attractive and typical of the area's palazzo's.
Easy to fit in a visit as is between the station and the centre - kids of all ages will love the water features in the piazza outside, a former car park and now a pedestrian area.

The history of the family Estense is also the history of Modena. They ruled this area for a couple of hundred years.

Breathtakingly decorated walls, superb artwork and rich history of the building, all brought to life by our knowledgable a and friendly guide, Daniel, The entrance fee was only 4 euros and I couldn't believe the splendour the palace afforded. Something like this in England would cost a lot more, and for that small price you receive a private guided tour. Well worth a visit, highly recommended

We had a great experience at the Palazzo Ducale. We visited as part of the Ferrari Pavoratti Land Tour and were escorted to the Palazzo by two young ladies who were lovely and told us all about it on the way. Then when we arrived we were given a private tour by the curator which I highly recommend as it was wonderful to view all the frescoes and be provided with the information about them and how they related to the views of the duke and dutchess. In addition, there is a contemporary art exhibit on display in one wing of the Palazzo that is outstanding.
