We only had time to visit the shop in Modena. The gentleman who served us was excellent with great knowledge and presentation. We would advice anybody to pop in and learn so much. We had no idea how complex and interesting a subject it was. We purchased a range of products but wish we had got the pearls. The online cookbook, if in the store as a hard back book would have been worth getting as well.
Many thanks.

We made a last minute request and we’re able to visit around noon. We learned all about the production of traditional balsamic vinegar of Modena (in English). Our host was wonderful.

We then tasted 8 different vinegars and they were delicious. We purchased several bottles and received a complimentary bottle. I especially liked the 6 year white and the truffle and fig infused varieties.

Highly recommended. Call ahead as there are multiple locations and make sure you’re visiting the correct address.

We had a really enjoyable FREE taste and tour experience with Crina this morning. Thank you. It was wonderful to hear how it is all made
and the effort going into producing good quality balsamic vinegar. Crina
seems to know her stuff. The taste testing was informative as we were able
to learn what vintage goes with what foods. An hour well-spent.

I made a point to visit an actual balsamic vinegar producer so that we could learn more about how traditional Balsamic is made and I assumed by going to the producer themselves we would get the best price for their vinegar. I knew that I wanted to buy some gifts so this was important to me.

Imagine my shock when I went into Modena, went into the large market building and discovered that I had been charged more for the vinegar than what is was being sold for in town. It has been over a month and I am still upset about this. I was charged 65 euros for the bottles of vinegar aged 12 years that I bought from the producer and it was available at the market for 59 euros. I was also charged more for the balsamic aged 10 years. Considering I bought a number of bottles this difference in price added up. Why does the producer charge more than the market? Is this how it works in Europe?? In the US that is the benefit to going to the producer, they make a pure profit from the buyer without a middle man so you pay less or at least NOT MORE than what you would pay at the store.

If you want to find out more about vinegar, fine, come here, but buy the vinegar somewhere else or better yet go to another traditional vinegar producer who doesn't take advantage of tourists.

Tucked away in a tiny little street outside Modena, you'll find Acetaia Malpighi, who are the largest house in the consortium of traditional balsamic vinegar makers.
You have to email or call in advance to be able to visit, however they are very accommodating with times. The tour itself is quite short. You climb to the roof of the house to see all the vinegar ageing in barrels and learn how it is made, why it is special and the difference between what they make and the normal balsamic vinegar you find in supermarkets.
Then you go back downstairs for some tasting. We spent another 20-30 mins here tasting many of the different types they make, probably about 7 in total, which was great fun. You learnt what to food was best to eat it with, the different tastes for the different ages.
if you like food then you should definitely make time to visit when in the area.

We drove here on our 14 night stay in Italy and enjoyed our experience. We did not have a reservation. We just stopped in and the staff was very nice and gave us a private tasting and shared history of their company, how vinegar is made and took us upstairs to taste from the barrel. We loved it! We left with three bottles of aged vinegar. Today we now only use the good stuff. It has changed how we shop for vinegar. Making sure what we buy is not just bottled in Modena, but made there too! Delicious! Glad we can order online, because I can't live without this stuff!

I never knew the differences in "balsamic" vinegar until give a private tour by Monica at The House of Malpigi. The estate is breathtaking and the vinegar attic is a sight to behold. Being able to taste various vintages I settled on a couple favorites and was able to purchase enough bottles to last a while in the US. Now I know the pleasure of true balsamic and am not fooled by imitations. The story of the uniform bottle for the Traditionale is alone worth the visit.

I didn't know that the word "tradizionale" made such a difference together with Aceto balsamico. I was in a small group when I visited the building where the Malpighi family makes the famous Aceto. Monica, a very charming lady, welcomed us as if we were her best customers. We started our visit by climbing a few flight of stairs which led to the loft, where the wooden barrels of aceto were amazingly aligned. Here she thoroughly told us all what's to know about the famous Aceto so we could understand why it takes so long to have a "balsamico tradizionale".
Afterwards, we were seated comfortably in the outside, around a small arena where Monica made clear to us in detail her products with great wisdom. We could taste several kinds of aceto, and eventually understand a lot more of this fantastic dressing. I want to thank Monica, who is so professional and knowledgeable, as well as the Malpighi Family for this great visit, which I definitely recommend.

I visited this place with my toddler along with a group of students. Signore Malpighi gave a detailed explanation as to how balsamic vinegar is made, and it was an eye opener. The tour/talk was conducted in Italian for my group, and I had no issues with that as I speak Italian. Not sure how other tours are conducted though. We were given a tasting session of various balsamic vinegars, and that was great. The place itself is gorgeous. And having had a chance to see aged balsamic vinegar from the 1800s (if I recall correctly, - but it was reaaaally old!) still in a barrel - priceless.

My father and I had read about the Acetaia Malpighi on the internet when searching for places to taste balsamic vinegar. We happened upon it when walking through Piazza Roma and decided to look in the window. There was a girl inside who offered a quick info session on the process of creating their balsamic vinegar and led a tasting session with us and another couple. We tried 6 different kinds of balsamic and ended up buying the amazing white vinegar and a small bottle of traditional balsamic. Absolutely delicious and decently priced. I don’t know the girl’s name but she did a wonderful job guiding us through the history, importance and process of balsamic and we thoroughly enjoyed it.
