Had much higher expectation for tasting and sampling with our visit and expected purchase.
This shop was a planned destination, many weeks prior to our departure for Italy! We entered on our own, no paid guide.
We arrived early. Patiently waited for opening, and in que. The shop is small, and while waiting outside, witnessed the attention the clerks took with the tasters ahead of us.
We are extraordinarily familiar with Balsamic of the region, and had high hopes in sampling from DOP producers previously elusive to us. We shared our familiarity and history of purchasing with our sales clerk, coincidentally shop manager, so she would be able to select appropriate tastings. Of the vast assortment on display, she selected, 1 at a time, first very basic young salad variety (truly NOT our goal), 1 young 6 yr production (ALSO, NOT a goal), 2 fifteen yr selections, and 1 25+ yr selection. We surmised this was her starting point. It was not. That was it. We requested other 25+ years tasting, the goal of our purchases, our goal was to purchase multiple bottles. Unfortunately, she was not interested or inclined to accommodate us with anything more than 1 more selection. The visit concluded with merely 2 bottles. We departed, deflated.
The following day, we chose to find Balsamic DOP producers in the region and did purchase our intended additional bottles, and in the end happier to spend our money directly with the house of the DOP producer.
Note to Producers:
It is spectacular that the consortium of DOP producers has this location and opportunity in the heart of Modena to showcase the product and to educate. However I would urge this illustrious group of producers to further investigate the selective service this shop is actually providing for them. It is my concern that if a customer cannot sample - specific to the intended purchase- the shop is providing dis-service.

Our daughter was very keen to visit La Consorteria and we were happy to accompany her. The staff we encountered were extremely professional, pleasant and very helpful. They took time to explain in detail the different products and producers & offered us several tastings. I was really surprised just how different they all are. We were very pleased with our purchases & look forward to getting them home to enjoy.

It was a very nice experience, the tasting was so nicely explained to us. The lady was very caring and we enjoyed every moment of it. I can highly recommend it if you are looking for the best vinegar ever and an unforgetable experience. We bought ours after tasting and we will for sure visit again. They also ship them all over europe.

Having seen the store on 'Somebody Feed Phil' we decided to treat ourselves to balsamico since we were in the area. First time we went in was last Tuesday and we were assisted by Pier, who was very helpful in explaining the process and having us do a taste test. Then today (Friday) we went in again to buy another bottle as a gift and were assisted by Cecilia. We told her this was our second visit and with her bubbly personality she happily assisted us through a more compact tasting to find a bottle we liked.
So why only 4 stars? We looked up the first purchase on the producer's website Tuesday evening and discovered we overpaid. When mentioned today we were told that only today the prices were discounted but it did not seem believable. In conclusion, concerning the overall experience we remain satisfied, yet we still left Modena with a prolonged sour taste in our mouths.

I am the store manager and I would like to express my disappointment for what happened today. Both of my assistants made a mistake, and I would like to give you a bottle of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar as a gift to make amend for it. Our visit here was a great experience: I always wanted to have some real balsamic vinegar, but didn't really know what to look for: what are the different tastes, what's the difference between 12 and 25 years. It's expensive stuff so good to try first. And this lovely shop gives the perfect opportunity and helped us find a very special balsamico to take home and enjoy.

My friend and I had seen the store on the Netflix show Somebody Feed Phil and headed in, Patrizia the host was so knowledgeable and friendly, even let us grab gelato and come back to try it with a few drops of balsamic 😊

Christina speaks wonderful English and gave 4 of us a marvelous experience, explaining everything about the process and answering questions. Very knowledgeable. We also were able to taste 7-8 or so different vinegars, each subtlety different and could patiently talk about the flavors of each one with her. Two other groups came in while we were there, one scheduled for later and another just waited patiently as we were wrapping up. If you buy a vinegar, then the 'tour' is free; otherwise I believe they ask you to pay 5 euros each at the end, not sure. We bought a bottle and she explained how to get it home safely in our carry on luggage. Would be worth it no matter what--it was exactly the experience we were looking for. right downtown near the duomo and easy to find. We did not have a reservation but you could make one.

Glad I found this place on line while looking for high quality traditional balsamic vinegar to bring back. Our host spoke excellent english, and provided an interesting presentation of the methods used in production of traditional vinegars, tasting of a nice assortment with suggestions of food pairings for different varieties. Tasting was 10euros which was refunded with a purchase. Although somewhat expensive, we are very happy with what we purchased. One, with final aging in cherry-wood cost 65 euro, and the vecchio (at least 25 years old) cost 90 euro. We took advantage of their shipping option with FedEx for 50 euro. They did a fantastic job packing everything for shipment, and it arrived in only 2 days without anything breaking (I wasn't sure how the glass pipettes for serving it by drop would fare, but they were fine). If you are continuing your travels, make sure that they delay the shipment so it arrives after you do as FedEx will only hold it for 5 days before returning it to Italy if unclaimed! I also obtained a pdf file they have so I can order more from the US to give as gifts.

This shop offers super friendly staff and owners which happily show you all the different varieties of balsamic vinegar as well as telling you how it’s produced and also letting you taste the different kinds and explaining what you should be tasting and which dishes the different kinds suits best.
This shop is a must visit while in modena and be sure to bring home at least one bottle of authentic traditional balsamic vinegar from this shop!

You must visit La Consorteria when your in Modena, very nice and kind people. We bought a bottle of vinegar and the guy that attended us gave us a sampler of different vinegars. Ask if they can put some drops of vinegar in your ice cream, we recommend it!
