This is a rather unusual tourist attraction but one worth seeing. It's a small building that stands high up on two brick and three wooden stilts. The wooden blocks that support the building itself actually bow with it's weight and you're amazed it's still standing

Pedestrian shopping area in a former 'Palace' home, containing cafes and upmarket shops. Look for the 3 arrows - a traditional story when a cuckolded man arranged for 3 archers to murder his wife, only for them all to miss when she appeared naked! lovely place to stroll through - no naked ladies these days though!

This is one of the best examples of a medieval portico. I found it quite incredible to be standing in front of a house which was built around 1245. If you cross the road, you can better see how the third level sticks, supported by really tall, 9m high oak columns. It looks quite unwieldy.
The porticoes are such a unique and distinctive feature of Bologna. However their existence is more accidental than deliberately planned. It seems that they were basically a by-product of people trying to find the loophole and get around building rules and regulations. Having pretty restrictive building codes where we live, it amused us to think that some things never change. Unable to from build higher and unable to expand the building’s footprint, people started extending the top floor outwards. As the extensions became bigger, people started adding supporting poles to prop the expanding top floor up, creating the porticoes beneath. By 1288, the city decided enough was enough and clamped down on the unauthorised building work. But (and this is where they were clever), instead of making everyone tear down the illegal structures, they just made everyone to build the portico out of masonry and they set exact heights and width so that the porticoes were was tall enough and wide enough for a man on a horse to pass by. As a result of their foresight, we now have almost 40km of wonderful porticoes throughout Bologna.
DON’T MISS: A most peculiar feature of the house is the 3 arrows stuck in the ceiling of the portico. Nobody knows how and why they are there but the most popular story is that a jealous husband sent 3 men to kill his wife. When they got there, she was in the window naked, which completely distracted the men and their arrows missed her and went into the roof instead.

We stumbled across this attraction when exploring the streets of Bologna. It was great to see such an old building wonderfully restored. Close by are some great restaurants that are reasonably priced.

You cannot better the location. Right in the centre but in a quiet square. 5 minutes from the two towers and the main square. No reception but Nicole was great meeting us there, explaining how everything worked and where we should eat. Central room where you eat and cake, fruit, teas and coffees are available 24/7. Nice big bedroom and en suite but keep your heads down otherwise you hit the beams in this B&B converted from a 13th century palace. Interesting breakfast which is varied each day.

The room was very comfortable and the location was superb. The views from the tower room are incredible. The coffee (available at any time) was really good too. This was a perfect place to stay in Bologna.

After watching Rick Stein's long weekend program we fell in love with Bolonga and promised ourselves we would go. Well it did not disappoint. Turns out the days we wanted to go for it was a busy week with beauty week do rooms were scares or super expensive. After much searching we came upon Casa Isolani and OMG we are so pleased we did, perfect location, rooms are gorgeous and the staff are just lovely.
It's not a hotel, it's a B&B. No staff on duty only on arrival someone meets you and the maid is there in the morning fixing continental breakfast and doing rooms. TBH, I really liked it like that, made it feel like it was your place.
It's top floor so no real veiws but that's fine because you want to be out there not in a room looking at it.
The decor is lovely and you have everything you need. We just loved the place. Be warned that it is not for people with mobility issues as you do have a steep blind once out of lift but for us it was worth it.
Highly recommend and will definitely go back.

First thing is location, location, location. One of the best locations, at the center of the old town, on the main old road. A nice legend and nice arrows left on the high ceiling to look for. Go see. Nice restaurants and shops to see around.
