Excellent place where to either buy local food or sample in several different authentic restaurants or if you fancy drinks, then go for wine bars

Except for the foodstalls, everything is closed on Sunday. So if you plan on getting some local food for home, try planning in advance and go during week days, or (maybe) saturday.

We have seen Mercato delle Erbe on TV and were really impressed. But unfortunately in reality it is quite small and many shops were closed. We however found a good cheese shop we can recommend. Formaggeria Barbieri. They will shrink wrap the cheese which is handy for travelling.

We went to the market to buy some sausage and cheese to take home and have a look at what is on offer as we love markets. Not disappointed. Although there were not too many people because of Corona, everyone was helpful and nice and we ate at one of the small restaurants a delicious meal.

Small market place in the central part of Bologna. Popular with locals, but prices are on the higher level.

While staying in an apartment in Bologna, I have been shopping daily at Mercato delle Erbe . I enjoy stopping at each of the specialty shops to get cheeses, meats, breads and the freshest vegetables. I see mainly locals shopping here and few tourists; so, you can be assured that the prices are reasonable. All of the vendors are very friendly and are happy to help me with my limited Italian.

This place is so authentic, you can find local food, vegetables, meat, fish, and my favourite, cheeses! Very cheap, you can understand how the Italians prepare their food visiting this small market, everything organic and fresh , what a nice way to understand the gastronomy of a place

Always love to see how local people do their food marketing. There are the usual fresh food stalls and a specialty cheese shop which is a little cheaper that those around the main square. There are little cook food stalls you can sit down and have a meal. I love Pollo Mino which is a rotisserie that make freshly grilled chicken and other meats and vegetable. They also serve some Italian fried snacks. The first time we order slices of roast beef and a roast lamp leg joint, and some roast vegetable. We took the food to Osteria De Sole to eat with the wine there. The food was so good that we went back the second day to get some more. This time there was roast pork and we also ordered half a chicken. I would say the roast beef is first class and the lamb was very good. The roast pork OK but the chicken is a little dry.
