Excellent starting point to get to know the cities of the Po river valley
The best way to get around Bologna is through the good train connections it has with all the cities in this area of Italy. If one arrives by plane there is a train that leaves the airport and in 20 minutes gets at this station located in the center of the city This station is a good starting point to get to know cities like Ravenna, Modena, Ferrara among others. It is always very crowded and although you can buy train tickets at the ticket office, I recommend getting them in advance on the websites to avoid queuing. The station has a wide range of cafeterias where you can enjoy breakfast for a good price or have a snack while waiting for the train Some train schedules are very crowded, so I recommend being careful to get a good seat on the trains since seats are not reserved on the ticket

    Confusing but useful
Bologna Centrale has great connections to most cities in Italy. We travelled from the airport to Centrale and then from there to Firenze. It is a big station and the platforms are randomly located. Ours ended up being quite far downstairs. The other confusing thing is the signage- sometimes pointing to one place in two directions, etc. However, it was a great station to connect from.

    Bologna Train Station
The station is well organized with abundant signage, but was a little confusing at first as our train arrived at the station at what appeared to be five levels below ground level. Finding our way to ground level took a minute. However, for departures the signage to both find which track your train was on and then finding the platform was very easy.

    Well organized
Trains, lotsa trains. Fast trains. Slow trains. Regional trains. Buses are across the street at the autozone. Lotsa of people and energy. Helpful staff. Buy a ticket and go. Well organized but kinda intimidating. I trained to San Marino ( Rimini), trained to Ferrari museum and bused to Lamborghini museum. It’s a great way to travel

    Small Station for Many Trains
Larger City train station with many trains coming and going each day. South side of the station is the traditional Stazione/main station and the North side is the termination point for the Marconi Express to the airport. The main station is not very large for as big of a city as Bologna is. A couple of snack bars, a news stand, and a Burger kind. Bus station biglietteria it to the left as you are facing the main station. Station has a typical layout with a large Arrivals/Departure board in the main lobby, a ticket window and a number of automated ticket kiosks. The main assistance point is in the center of the lobby. Binari are reached via the underground hallway that also connects both side of the station. Make sure to check out the memorial just outside the station to the people who lost their lives during the terrorist bombing on 2 August 1980.

The fifth railway station of Italy
For number of trains and number of travelers, this is the fifth railway station of Italy, it is in a strategic position for connection nord-south and west-east directions. It was built in 1858 when Italy was not a unique state as it’s now. Bologna was on the border between the Papal state and the Austrian-Hungary state. This railway station is unfortunately famous for the terrorist attack made the 2 August 1980 where 85 people died

Train station to connect to various Italy destinations.
At the train station we shopped at Tally Weijl ladies clothing store with some great specials on there sales .
We travelled with
Italotreno.it
From Bologna Italy to Rome in 2 hours instead of 6.
High speed train
260km plus
Train was delayed by 45 minutes due to train congestion.
Comfortable seating.
Free WiFi.
Food trolley on board.
Free snack with a drink purchase for 3.90 Euros.
Trains are normally efficient and effective.

We traveled to Parma from this station, first time in Italy, so it was bit confusing at first but things became clear very quickly.
You can buy your tickets from machines to your destination
The ticket machine can be changed to English.
To find you train platform, look
on information board at the timings and you will see your train
number matching your train number. You must also Validated
your tickets before board your train, the validation machines are
everywhere and they look like small box like machine.

My wife and I needed antigen tests in May 2022 in Bologna for cruise ship boarding in Ravenna two days later. Our hotel was across the street from the train station so we went to the Farmacia della Stazione there. Even though a sign indicated appointments are required, the senior pharmacist took us immediately. The senior pharmacist and his colleagues were professional, kind, and friendly. After our negative tests were completed they were receptive to chatting with us about our itinerary and even helped us with finding a limousine service for our ride to Ravenna. They are clearly “America Friendly” and very nice people otherwise. HIghly recommend this pharmacy for any needs one might have in Bologna.

I have used Bologna train station countless times over the years, everything is well organised and clearly signposted both in Italian and in English.

What I didn't know is that they have built an entirely new underground floor with platforms for high-speed trains (I had the high-speed train to Rome).

This part is connected by lifts and escalators to the rest of the station and the transfer takes a matter or minutes, if not seconds! Excellent set-up.

We were on a rail holiday so use lots of train stations and this was easily our least favourite.

It is absolutely huge and we found it not to be user-friendly.

Firstly, the platform numbering seems to be completely random with numbers either missed or duplicated. This makes it difficult to make sure you were on the right train and you could end up heading in exactly the wrong direction!

The information is not nearly as good as we found in other countries and the added to the confusion. Add inthe fact that the toilets weren’t working, you have to walk miles to get anywhere and the food concessions are limited and poor makes it not a great place. Transit only from now on!

The worst ever service at this train station. Incomplete instructions and directed us to a wrong train. If you can travel via any other router please do so, staff rude and give wrong instructions. Our train got cancelled, got instructed to get on another one - that then ended up not stopping at the station we wanted to as the whole station was closed. A nightmare trying to get to the final destination from there. Worst ever customer service.
