Like most large cities, Bologna lost its fortress walls and towers in the XVIII-XIX centuries, when there was an acute problem of lack of land for new construction of houses and laying new streets. This gate is the best that remains of the Castello Di Gallura, which makes up the third ring of fortifications of old Bologna. Originally, by the way, both the walls and the gates were wooden. The current gate was built presumably in 1200. However, it is clear that they were not so beautiful now. They acquired a Baroque appearance thanks to the reconstruction from 1659 to 1663 designed by Bartolomeo Provaglio. From the square of September XX, we can see the back decorative part of the gate. The reverse side is less aesthetic, because it is intended for defense.

Since this structure is so close to the train station, you shouldn't miss seeing it and making it the beginning your Bologna experience. It is also near the main drag of Via Independza. It is a couple of hundred years old after its latest restoration but dates back nearly 800 years as a "guardian" of this entrance into the city.

Porta Galliera is located in the north of the historic center of Bologna, next to the central railway station and not far from the old Via Galliera (Galliera street). You won't miss it if you walk from the railway station to the center.
Porta Galliera is one of the nine Bologna gates that still exist, and is a part of the third ring of fortress walls of the 13th century.
The historical center of Bologna looks like an irregular octagon. On the perimeter of this figure, the third (and last) walls with massive gates were erected in the 13th and 14th centuries.
Quite close to Porta Galliera you may see the ruins of a castle built for Pope John the 22nd. The people of Bologna had a complex relationship with the Papal States. As soon as the relationship have been deteriorating, the people of Bologna have been destroying the castle as a symbol of papal authority. Relations have been improving - the castle has been rebuilt.

It is a nice place, with ruins, if you have to wait your train it is almost in front of the station.

Porta Galliera was one of the gates in the third and outer ancient city walls of Bologna, as Bologna grew over the centuries new city walls were erected to accommodate the expanding city. The original gate was built in the thirteenth century, but was rebuilt in the seventeenth century as is seen today. It is located a short walk away from the main train station in Bologna.

It's a wonder that a ruin like this, which in my humble opinion is quite ugly and above all the same as thousands of other things that can be seen in Italy and Bologna, is even indicated among the places to see for a tourist, the square is deserted, the gate abandoned to itself and around there is practically nothing. And the area is particularly dangerous for fights and drug dealing, I would leave it off the list.

This is one of the many gates scattered around the city. It has ruins underneath and across the street. It stands on a busy square and is still in decent condition.

Very close to the train station - if you are working your may into the middle fo town you will most certainly encounter this gate. Not perfectly preserved, but well cared for, this gate offers a view of what the medieval traveler would have encountered when visiting Bologna. There is a view of some of the old canals, and the doors are massive. There is enough space to walk around and the guides inside of the structure are very capable of answering questions.

Porta Galliera was a gate of the former outer medieval walls of the city. It is located near the Central Railway Station.

This gate is the most ornamented of all the remaining gates. The gate was completed in 1661.

The interior portal has a Baroque facade, while the external portal is more a gate of the defensive military role.

On our visit, there were renovations going on.
