- ErkiBearLondon, United Kingdom383 contributionsmake this your first and regular stop during your trip to Bologna!Piazza Maggiore is fantastic! We were lucky enough to be in Bologna at the time of the Portici festival and there was something going on in the square most days and every evening. The square is surrounded by bars and restaurants, has a tourist information office, various museums, the basilica and the road train to San Luca leaves from there so make this your first and regular stop during your trip to Bologna!Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 13, 2023

A couple of different bars to grab a seat and watch the world go by. During the day, street artists and some buskers. At night during the summer, movies on a large screen or street performers.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 23, 2023
- sueoversizedjordanBologna, Italy23 contributionsDon't miss the details.Sculptures in the piazza are of particular interest. The temporary exhibition took place in the past September 2020 and could happen more. In fact we could meet the Bolognese Nettuno at other cities too, like in Laeken in Belgium (La fontaine de Neptune) but perhaps not the Nereids. They are quite special. Not to mention that the cityscape is amazing. This is thanks to the operation of the city government keeping with Unesco heritage regulations. New buildings and businesses must not interfere with the existing landscape of the city.Visited December 2023Traveled on businessWritten January 30, 2024

The square has been around since the Middle Ages and is where you find numerous palace buildings, a delightful Neptune Fountain as well as the Basilica di San Petronio, the largest and most important church in Bologna. There are quite a few restaurants, coffee shops, bars and shops around Piazza Maggiore and if you are lucky, you might catch a festival or weekend event on the square as well. - Pavlos9 contributionsOne of the most underrated Italian Piazza’sFirst of all, Bologna is S T U N N I N G. One of the most underrated Italian cities , with so much to offer. From museums to clubs. Piazza Magiore was just the best place to hang out , especially for a night out. 🆘Last years they are being organized different cultural activities. For example, when we visited the piazza, there has been an open cinema going on with Italian old movies being shown every night. The vibe is amazing and it’s really spacious sooo no reason to worry if it’s overcrowded. 🆘Be careful, there are many pickpockets!Visited July 2024Traveled with friendsWritten July 29, 2024
- Martin W621 contributionsThe Piazza Maggiore is beautifulThe Piazza Maggiore is beautiful, but it is especially worth visiting in the evening, as the buildings are atmospherically lit. The Palazzo Comunale in particular is lit as if by candlelight, very beautiful. During the day you can also admire the Neptune fountain. It's like the David in Florence - you have to pay attention to the hand of the sculpture!Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 1, 2024
- Ray WAberdeen, United Kingdom398 contributionsHonest ReviewWhen you plan a visit to Italy, you immediately think of places such as Rome, Milan, Venice, or Pisa! Bologna is probably not somewhere high up on people's places to visit, but it should be! You could spend hours writing reviews on all of the sights this wonderful city has to offer, so it's easier just to pick the No 1 attraction and say that Bologna is Fantastic and well worth the visit.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 13, 2024

Otherwise it contains numerous restaurants and bars particularly coming alive in the evenings. A modern Rich is added by the glass staircase leading to the Modernissima underground cinema complex.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 29, 2024

Bologna just feels ancient and whether you're strolling around or sitting in Piazza Maggiore you can't help but feel the history.
The Fountain of Neptune is nearby, within sight.
The Biblioteca Salaborsa (Library) flanks one side of the square. You can see ancient ruins inside the Biblioteca Salaborsa as well as use a bathroom (1€) if you need to.
People watching, meditating on Bologna's history, relaxing, tour groups, segway tours...there is always lots going on in Piazza Maggiore

The Piazza Maggiore, the heart of Bologna, is a place that defies the mere description of a city square. It's not only the epicenter of history, architecture, and culture but also a place where personal memories blend seamlessly with centuries of tradition.
Upon our first visit to this magnetic location, the Possieduto, the magnificent Cattedrale di San Petronio, and the grand governmental buildings took us on a historical tour that transcended time. The square is home to some of the city's most iconic landmarks, and its past is etched in every stone and every corner.
St. Petronio's facade, one of the largest churches in the world, never fails to impress. Its incomplete façade speaks volumes about Bologna's complex history and the city's free spirit. The nearby Palazzo d'Accursio, with its vibrant frescoes and intricate carvings, paints a picture of the city's past governance and civic pride.
But Piazza Maggiore is more than a cluster of historic buildings. It's a living, breathing space where culture, leisure, and everyday life meet. Many an evening we've spent here, watching the nightfall with a glass of wine from the neighboring Signorvino, or enjoying a film under the stars as part of a special exhibition. The square transforms into an open-air cinema, art gallery, and performance space, adapting to the seasons and the city's vibrant cultural calendar.
The atmosphere in Piazza Maggiore is lively yet relaxed. Musicians, artists, tourists, and locals intermingle, creating a cosmopolitan vibe that's both welcoming and intriguing. The array of cafes and eateries that border the square offer endless opportunities to sit, relax, and absorb the essence of Bologna.
But what makes Piazza Maggiore truly special is the way it embraces you, the way it becomes part of your story. For us, it has been a place of discovery, relaxation, and cultural enrichment. Whether viewing a thought-provoking art exhibition or simply watching the world go by, Piazza Maggiore offers a unique and unforgettable experience.
In the end, Piazza Maggiore is not just a historical site or a beautiful setting; it's a symbol of Bologna itself. It's where the past meets the present, where art meets life, and where every visitor finds something uniquely their own. It's a square that never fails to surprise and delight, making every visit a new adventure. It's not just a place we've been to; it's a place we keep returning to, drawn by its allure and the endless possibilities it offers.

It is the center of Bologna. A place where you can sit and relax or even drink your coffe and eat the traditional food of Italy, pizza. Around this place there are a lot of shops where you can buy clothes and souvenirs. It is almost 5 minutes away from the two towers, another monument of the city.

This square has the complete Medieval buildings in one area. The Jail with its Gallows in on one side, San Petronius in which the prisoner was tried on the other side. The square is flanked by Market and City Hall with the Neptune Fountain, water of life on side of Jail. When we were there, the square was empty, so we got an unobstructed view of the area and could appreciate the guides explanation and highlights which she pointed out.

We stopped here for spot of lunch and absorbed the atmosphere of Bologna.
This is a really nice example of what a piazza should be.
We saw people of all ages, locals and tourists, all gathering together in bars, cafes, shops or just lounging and sunning themselves in the wide expanse of the square.
There was an outdoor music event in progress that Sunday afternoon, lots of different singer/songwriters entertaining people in the square.
There was a security presence from the Carbinieri, but very unobtrusive.
The piazza has a good selection of dining and shopping, mixed with historic buildings, beautiful architecture and the Neptune fountain.
Kudos to the people of Bologna for creating an open and welcoming space for both locals and travellers.

Bologna is by far the dirtiest city I have ever seen so far in Europe. Everywhere smells like urine, garbage is at every step and the air quality is terrible. Not recommend it at all! The only positive thing was a restaurant (Vicolo Colombina) where I ate

We enjoyed wandering around this square and it's worth noting that Bus number 20 stops here if you visit the Basilica San Luca.
The good news is there are splendid views which can be seen for €5 pp climbing up the mere 266 steps behind St Peters ( San Pietro) cathedral. You have to walk behind and outside to the right towards dome where there is an external staircase and Staff on attendance.
We didn't go up the towers because Getting up the two towers at weekends was difficult it was very busy. Buying tickets are impossible from any retailers and have to be bought using the almost impossible app to download (rubbish) and we also found the staff there unhelpful.

I think it's the central piazza of Bologna. The Basilica di San Petronio is located there as well as many buildings of architectural interest. There are many main streets close the piazza, but also little streets with beautiful shops and cafés.

I just saw the question. When we were there in August they suggested it would be ready around the end of October. I went onto to the bolognawelcome, com website today and you can book tours of the renovation works until Dec 10.
No guarantee that it will be finished then - best to email the tourist office to confirm.
