Piazza Santo Stefano has taken my breath away…just a corner of beauty in the hearth of Bologna.
The rectangular shape is just so perfect with, again, asymmetric side of it! And of course the coronation of all this is the beautiful church in the corner…however my preferred “look” is from the church itself…you can see it from the picture!!!

Really nice public square that feels much less touristy compared to Piazza Maggiore. You'll find the historic complex of seven historic churches known as Basilica San Stefano and buildings lined with traditional Bolognese porticos, a couple casual eateries and wine bars with outdoor seating. There is a great gelateria and a few retail shops as well. The scene is relaxed and charming, well worth spending some time at Piazza Santo Stefano during visits to Bologna.

I didn’t plan on coming here but stumbled upon it whilst on the way to eat yet again more gelato! I’m so glad I did and it was only after I realised where I was! It really is in my opinion my favourite bit of the city. I was fortunate as it was nice and quiet when I went.

This place has a nice atmosphere, with bars and gelaterias along the streets. It is fully car-free, and opens on a great complex of ancient churches.

Piazza Santo Stefano was a very lively square on the day of our visit. There was an open market with stalls selling anything imaginable.

This public square in the historic centre of Bologna is dominated by the Basilica of Santo Stefano and church complex. The square is often used for cultural events and when I was there I think the medical graduates of Bologna University were celebrating their graduation. Like many public squares in Bologna, this one also has plenty of cafes and restaurants.

A lively and lovely square in the pedestrian zone, with a couple of coffee bars, ice cream parlours, and a "secret" passage leading to the three arrows on Strada Maggiore. In the evening, students gather to play music together and have fun.

Simple, espectacular, looks like a small village inside the big city.
Surrounded by places and churches, it is the right place to take a rest, get some nice food and have a relaxing cup of coffee.

Allow a few hours to visit this unusual complex of churches all on the same site ... need time to get full understanding of history and layout ... certainly in top 5 must visit in Bologna

4 churches side by side in a lovely square, fascinating brickwork and domes. Also a cloister which could be interesting if not packed with school parties!
