About
Italian cooking lessons in an Italian home! We are happy to teach you how to prepare authentic Italian dishes and although we are friendly, we are also quite serious about teaching you the right way to make these dishes and ensuring that you will be able to replicate these back home. Your success back home is our objective. We are professional and experienced but not stuffy or arrogant. Our specialty is pasta making, the old fashioned way; the way the Italian grandma's still make it (with a wooden rolling pin and board)! You will make several pasta shapes and sauces and won't miss anything! We also teach how to cook with local specialties like Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, Traditional Balsamic Vinegar, Bologna Mortadella and Prosciutto from Parma. We cook with fresh seasonal produce, meats, and seafood. Lessons are personalized and held in small groups (1-3, up to 6 if related or close friends) to assure plenty of one-on-one attention. Our hands-on cooking lessons are held in a home setting. No surcharge for single participants or private lessons. Discounts for children. Lessons available in English, Spanish or Italian.

- Anna W1 contributionA thorough, fun, and tasty cooking class!Maribel was an excellent and patient teacher! My husband and I decided to do the market component of the class as well, and it was great to see what was in season, ask questions about shopping at Bologna's very nice market, and select the dishes we'd make later that day. Maribel tailored the dishes, including appetizers, to our preferences, and walked us through step by step. We learned so much, including which steps of pasta making and shaping to pay special attention to, and why steps were performed in a certain way. In the end, we had a delightful meal and received recipes by email that we're able to use at home. Maribel made this an enjoyable and memorable experience, and we recommend it to anyone interested in learning to make Italian food while in Bologna.Visited September 2022Written January 8, 2023
- ghibellina525 contributionsGetting the nitty gritty of pasta making from an expertMaribel had been recommended to me for some time now by people who understand food. I wanted to gain more knowledge about pasta making.. It was beyond my expectations. I also teach cooking so I have an idea of how a class should be taught Maribel is clear and methodic in how she presents pasta making. She taught us in a very explicit way the techniques of pasta making that I finally came to understand in this class. Today was like a dream of mine for many years. To attend a cooking class in Italy. This was so much more than I ever imagined. To meet Maribel, an amazing teacher and to have one of my best friends attend with me, was so enjoyable.
We began with visiting several markets to purchase everything needed for our class. At each store, Maribel taught us about the products in the store. The bakery, butcher, cheese store, wine store and all the fresh ingredients being sold in the alley.
We not only learned how to make homemade pastas, we learned how to clean Artichokes, make butternut squash filling and meat ragu.. The wine was a perfect pairing with our meal. The gorgonzola stuffed dates, Mortadella & Prosciutto and cheese were outstanding. We finished with a filled cookie to top off our day.
It was better than I could even imagine. Maribel is a joy to spend a day with and get to know.
Thank you for making my dream come true.

Having lived in Bologna for over 1 year, I had run out of "things to do" in Bologna that I had not done 20+ times already... So to give my visiting friends (and their 1 year old!) an authentic Bolognese experience, I sought out "Taste of Italy" to supplement their visit...and we were absolutely BLOWN AWAY by the experience! Not only were we able to take away a better appreciation for the careful preparation, skillful use of ingredients, and (of course) the TASTE of these typical dishes of the region...but the superbly kind, attentive, and fun teaching style of our chef/sensei/guru, Joanna, truly made this an experience we will never forget!! This is now an activity I will GLADLY repeat with future visitors, over and over again!! Thank you for making this experience from my new "hometown" so memorable :)

My husband and I had the joy of a cooking class with Joanna, in her authentic Italian home and we loved every minute of it! She met us at the old market and led us through an informative and very enjoyable tour, starting with a coffee and then meeting the butcher and vendors that she knows well. Being a part of the shopping process was so fun and seemed so necessary to appreciate the fresh ingredients for our menu.
Joanna was interested in what we were interested in and we chose a menu together that pleased us all and after a complete tour of the market, we walked back to her home in the old city center. Even the walk back to her apartment was informative! We learned about Bologna and felt like a real Italian strolling under the beautiful porticos.
When we arrived at her charming home, we began to prepare the pasta and the sauces that would soon be enjoying. Joanna was a great teacher, patient and attentive and making the whole experience fun and memorable. We each made our own ball of pasta and learned how to make the local tortellini, which were so delicious! Her apartment is full of character and has an amazing view of a picturesque courtyard, helping you feel like you are REALLY in Italy. We looked into other schools that were in commercial kitchens, but for us, we loved being in an Italian's home and sitting down together to enjoy wine and all the fruits of our labor.
We had two lovely appetizer, two different pastas and even finished the meal with a yummy dessert. We both felt like this was the highlight of our whole trip! We will be singing the praises of Taste of Italy for a long time to come and will definitely recommend this course to everyone we know! Thank you Taste of Italy and Joanna.

We had a wonderful time with Joanna, who is an articulate and knowledgable teacher. Not only did we enjoy learning details about Italian cooking, we learned more about the Italian way of life in general. Our lesson also helped guide us when ordering in a restaurant. Thank you Joanna and Taste of Italy, today was a vacation highlight!

My husband and I spent a truly memorable day with Maribel. We were treated to a tour of the colorful lively markets of Bologna to pick our ingredients and then a great day of cooking ( and eating!) at her home. We were the only two students on this day so had lots of time to enjoy her instuctions and stories. Maribel is a very knowledgable and patient teacher which resulted in a delicious meal to end the day. I highly recommend the market tour as it enhances the overall experience. The price for the class and tour was very reasonable and great value ( much less than a few others we looked into). We highly recommend putting this on your list if you happen to be planning a visit to this great city!

I would highly recommend this experience. It was a very enjoyable way to spend the day. I felt like I was in my mother's kitchen as she made pasta before the days of kitchen aid mixers and pasta machines. It is truly an art! I wish I had more time to take additional classes.

Actually went with my daughter who is a Chef so this was her suggestion. I wanted to learn how to make pasta better, and from an expert. There were just the 2 of us as the other person cancelled. We were the beneficiaries of that since we got all of her attention. The shopping at the market was wonderful. She pointed out the reasons for her selection and suggested who to purchase items we wanted to bring back home (quality, price) and told us who to avoid as they were overpriced! Maribel is an excellent teacher - just what my daughter had wanted and I learned techniques I never thought I'd master. I know there are competitors in Bologna, but I cannot believe they could hold a candle to her.

I intended to book this cooking class for my wife while I went off for a massage or to play billiards....w r o n g ! I have no business being in the kitchen unless it's to eat. The first step in OUR pasta lesson was to place the cracked egg inside the circular pile of flour we had just assembled. MY egg didn't quite seem to get there, landing outside of the circle. But Maribel covered for me, praising my efforts, whatever the result. As it turned out, it actually was better than an afternoon of shooting pool. My wife's a great cook and was impressed with the lesson. Maribel didn't succeed in making me a chef, but she was successful in seeing that I had a fun time..... and a great meal at the conclusion of our class. We're now setting a date with our kids for an afternoon of making tortellini. Thanks, Maribel.

Thank you Janstroh for a humorous look back at our class together.
We should try to have fun when we cook, otherwise its just work!
Kind regards

Hello!
lessons begin at ten am so for last minute participation it is best to call on the mobile phone you will find on the website. I won't bother putting either here as Trip will not allow those to be seen.
Most students wish to do the 8:45 am market tour as well so that means that I do not get to check my email before heading out in the morning.
I do check my email regularly although i do not do so while I am with my students.

Hello Molly, thank you for your inquiry.
I have some cooking lessons that begin at 100€, the cost of the market tour is 35€ for a single participant and 55€ per party. If your friend just wants to keep you company and eat, we have a sitting fee that depends on the cost of your lesson but it ranges from 45E to 65€. We have reduced prices for children, etc etc.
For the entire list of prices, please check the website (which I'm not allowed to post!) or send us an email.
You should be able to find both on the Tripadvisor page or by researching Taste of Italy and Bologna.
