Although you cannot enter the castle as it is temporarily closed for restoration, even being outside you can still feel it’s grandeur. Perched on top of a mountainside, you have the benefit of visiting multiple churches and la Torre when visita Castle Montfort. Not mention the spectacular 360 panoramic view of Campobasso. It literally takes your breath away

Walking along the narrow streets of the old town centre, along the picturesque salita dei monti (climb of the mountains), you can reach the highest point of the city of Campobasso. I was there as a child, and have returned numerous times as an adult. This time I was with my brother, sister-in-law & 3 nephews. A piece of history well kept,

The castle is well worth visiting especially with a guide to tell more of the history of the city of Campobasso and the castle itself.
Having been built on top of the hill, the castle overlooks the city and surrounding areas and offers a fantastic view all over the area from the top of its tower.
There is no admission fee - it's free for everyone, so it's definitely a must see for anyone visiting Campobasso.
The walk up the hill from the city center can, and should, take a while, but it is worth it and should not be too exhausting for anyone.

We walked up to this castle overlooking Campobasso in the heat only to see there is parking right outside the castle! The entrance is free and the views excellent. There is not a lot to see from a historical perspective but worth a visit anyway even if you feel you have 'done it' in 15 minutes.

The remains of the Castle over look Campobasso, the region of Molise's capital. The Castle Monforte was built in 1450. Beside the castle is the Church Santa Maria Maggiore as pictured below , erected in the 11th century and rebuilt in 1525. Inside the old church is a wooden statue of the Incoronata Mary from the year 1334. There is no fee and it is worth the leisurely walk up the hill (mountain) . The views are worth it the long long walk up.

You will see the Castel Monforte from just about every location in Campobasso, so imagine the views when you go up to it. There is a road that takes you to the top, I suggest you walk through the old town if your up to it. Worth going up to see and the Church next to it

Interesting castle, the symbol of campobasso city. The medieval castle is on the hill above the city and dominates all the city and the countryside around campobasso. I have been there many times. It's well kept, outside and inside. It's close to the city centre, you have to go uphill for a steep road. I think it's more beautiful walking the road to the castle. Inside it's interesting for the story. If you stay in campobasso you have to visit the castle. Recommended

i believe my grandfather grew up in this castle. i believe he left in his late teens or early twenties to come to america. his name was nicola de rensis. do you have any record of this? he probably left in the early 1900's and family still lived there. why was the castle abandoned and when did the family leave? when did it become a tourist attraction?
