The Stazione in Ancona is not a good station to spend a nice day at a railway station - it's not modern and cozy, doesn't has lots of shopping ooprtunities or is touristicaly interesting. But it is a good place to start a tour into the city, if you're having just a short stop in Acona. Because it's the central bus station too, you have to switch there form the city busses to the regional busses, including the airport busses. So if you're arriving in Ancona by train, bus or ferry and leaving by plane - like we and I think lots of other backpackers do - the station is a very good place to store your luggage for a trip into the city centre.
We arrived at the ferry harbor of Ancona in the morning and were due to go to the airport in the early evening, so we wanted to use our time in Acona as good as possibly. We went to the station from the harbour, a way you can walk, but it's not a nice walk and it took it's time. The best way is to buy a day ticket at the first opportunity, you can do this in most tabacco stores. We did this because we had lots of luagge and at the harbor you have really no service facilities like luggage storage and so we went to the station At the Stazione you have to search for what you want: we wanted to store our luggage, and the luggage storage is located at the public restrooms, without any signs pointing at this. But the service there was great for low fares, after we found it! The sanitary facilities are also old and ugly, but clean comfortable. You can get tickets for all busses and trains at the station.
The platforms are good to find, both the platforms for trains and for busses.
From The station you can go (back) to the city and you should definitly do that, because the part of Ancona around the station is very ugly and boring, but the city is great. Our recommendation is to do the self-guided walking tour, for which you get maps and guides for free at the tourist information near the theater.
Summary: Use the station as a practical starting point for your visit, store your luggage there (Ancona is a tiny city with tiny streets and ancient paving - you don't want to carry your luggage around there) and explore the city!

Great connection if you are traveling onward to Croatia or Greece. Ferries to Split, Pula, Greece Isles easily accessible by bus. DO NOT TRY TO WALK to the ferry terminal.

The station is neat and clean in appearance. The only confusion was we did not read the signs correctly. Our train from Ancona to Foligno was departing from Track 2West. We went to the Track 2 platform. The signs for 2West were at the west end of the station and we did not see them. So, when we realized our mistake we ran from Platform 2 to Platform 2West. Made the train but if we had noticed the signs earlier, we would not have had to rush to catch the train.

We found this station, very easy to navigate, its clean, we bought our tickets online, so did not have to validate them prior to departure. Trains while we were there, were only a few minutes late, apart from one day, where rail staff were on strike, and most services were late or cancelled. We found staff friendly, most days we were there.

This is the only station that I have found in Italy with escalators. It made it so much easier to handle luggage than having to use the stairs and/or elevators. It is a large station with limited parking outside, so arrive early as you may have to walk a distance to the station from where you can find a park.

We made our trains, but there was confusion in our mind about more than one track with seemingly the same number, except "west". That is, there are a couple of tracks off to the side which are "binario 1 ovest", etc, and there is also binario 1, 2 etc. The departure board makes the distinction, but we were confused. Also, the "ordinary" train tickets (regionale) are not valid on the Intercity trains. Don't forget to validate/timestamp your ticket before boarding. Good clean trains.

There are automatic ticket machines where you can get a ticket if you put in enough effort. Overall the station is good, the service good, but not really friendly. Even if it is production line stuff this is Italy so you have to try hard to eat badly and the coffee is always good!

Access to north, west and south train stations from the east coast of Italy. Very active station. Beware of your train tickets. If you do not validate them prior to departure they will charge you a high fare and they are looking for it. Sometimes ten times your usual fare without mercy.

We arrived from Split (Croatia) by ferry. We walked just 3 blocks until the first bus station (easy to walk even with 2 big luggages). All the lines are named by letter ( I, L, N...) and go to the train station. You can by the bus tickets accros the street (in a coffee bar). The bus walks just 2 stops until the train station. So easy and fast. If you prefer you can walk from port to train station, it is about 20 min. But if you dont have heavy luggage!
