Top ways to experience Stanze di Raffaello
The area
Neighborhood: Vatican / Borgo
Frocked priests, colorful Swiss Guards, insistent souvenir shop owners, flag-waving tour guides, and pilgrims from around the world. This is the Vatican and Borgo, Rome's most recognized neighborhood which acts as Vatican City's front yard. Aside from the souvenir boutiques and a few food spots, the only business conducted here is papal. In the daytime, the tiny medieval sector bustles with holy activity, as visitors vie for elbow room, or stand in line for a visit. Once the sun sets, the neighborhood is transformed into a quiet and picturesque hamlet.

The Raphael Rooms were amazing, one of my favorite areas in the whole museum. Given that most of the crowds bypass this area to go right to the Sistine Chapel, it was much less crowded than other areas of the museum. You can take your time to appreciate the beauty surrounding you and, unlike the Sistine Chapel, you are also free to take photos in here (although they never do the rooms justice!).

Rapheal's Rooms are located just before the Sistine Chapel. What you find here are four rooms beautifully painted by Raphael and his school (1508-1524). These rooms are Renaissance masterpieces detailed with religious themed frescos that are so beautiful and well worth spending a few minutes each prior to entering the Sistine Chapel. This is one of my favourite places to visit within the Vatican Museums.

Pictures do not do the Raphael rooms justice. When you walk in and see all four walls painted from top to bottom by one of the greatest painters who ever lived, it just takes your breath away. The most famous portion is the The School of Athens, representing philosophy, where he depicted many of the famous scholars of Antiquity under one roof. If you choose not to see it with a guide, make sure and watch a youtube video explaining who and what everything is. You'll truly appreciate it more when you understand the composition and who the figures are. If you look hard enough, you might even see Michelangelo and maybe even Rafael himself in the painting. I would also recommend watching Raphael, A Mortal God before you come. It's a great documentary him.

One of the strangest things we have witnessed over the years is the swarm of visitors that make a beeline to the Sistine Chapel, passing right through the Stanze di Raffaello (Raphael Rooms) without bothering to take note of what they are not seeing.
These rooms are stunning, we find them just as enjoyable as the Sistine Chapel and you can often view them without the mass crowds. We have actually been fortunate to have had some of the large rooms all to ourselves during a few of our visits. Also, unlike the Sistine Chapel, you can take as many pictures as you like in the Stanze di Raffaello rooms, and there are information cards made available to help you understand what you are looking at. This is helpful as many guide books don't describe these rooms very well.
In many ways, as wonderful as the Sistine Chapel is, it is not our favorite thing sot see in the Vatican Museum. This distinction belongs to the Stanze di Raffaello rooms. These are just really special rooms to visit. So, we encourage all to give a few minutes to them prior to joining the hordes of visitors cramming into the Sistine Chapel hall. You will not be disappointed that you did.

It is in the tour of the Vatican museum's holdings, and the frescoes are elegant, beautifully composed, and show his remarkable drawing facility. A nice treat, toward the end of the tour. Unfortunately by that time one is so tired and it is so crowded that one doesn't spend as much time looking as one could elsewhere, but still very enjoyable to see them.

These rooms are more accessible, less crowded and you can take photos inside to your heart's delight, plus, honestly, the art is of finer quality than Michelangelo's Sistine chapel. These masterpieces, including the world famous "School of Athens" are often skipped by unknowledgeable tourists yet they are probable some of the greatest art in the Vatican.

I read somewhere that Raphael’s Rooms open only in the morning, is this correct? Thank you.

I was there in the afternoon, so I believe the answer to your question is no unless things have changed.

I would like to know what the name of the battle painting is that is in the first room off the hall of tapestries that leads to the raphael rooms?
Written November 17, 2017
The Battle of the Milvian Bridge iin 312 is depicted in which the Emperor Constantine prevailed over Maxentius under the sign of the cross leading to Christianity become the religion of Rome.

Dear Madame/ Mister,
How much does it cost to enter in Vaticano Museums and see Raffaello Stanze ?
Kind Regards.

Depends how you do it. We took jump the queue option with Viator. You can only visit this gallery within tour of Vatican museums.
All prices will be online.
Written December 23, 2016
The full ticket price is €16. There are reductions for concessions. I would seriously advise you to consider buying your ticket online to avoid the long queues at the ticket office - you can do this at the Vatican Museum website. Trip Adviser protocols prevent me from posting the website URL but if you google Vatican Museums you should find it, and you will see a link for 'Hours and tickets'. You have to buy a ticket for the whole museum as the Raphael Rooms are part of this. If you have purchased your ticket online the best time to go, I think, is early in the morning. Although the opening time is officially 9.00, you can usually go in about 8:30 if you already have a ticket. By 11:00 the queues are usually much longer! And I would suggest avoiding Mondays if possible as many other museums in Rome are closed then and more people head to the Vatican.
