- JulianneUtah7 contributionsBeautiful Walks, Fresher AirThis was an absolutely beautiful tour! I am so glad my husband tacked this on to our guided tour of the Sistine Chapel. It’s a peaceful walk with lots of history and beautiful gardens and buildings. They have various garden styles (English, French, Italian) and lots of hidden gems. It’s also one of the few places where the smell of smoking isn’t heavily present (if at all). So, definitely see the gardens if you’re desperate for fresher air.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 17, 2023

The Vatican Gardens are normally only open only via a tour (either walking tour or small electric bus). We took the “May with Mary in the Vatican Gardens” tour, only offered on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the month of May – for the amazing price of 13.5 euros! The ticket included entrance to the Vatican Museums (normally 20 euros) and the 5 euro booking fee was waived. The walking tour (almost 2 hours) focused on the many statues of the Virgin Mary in the Vatican Gardens, including a recreation of the Grotto of Lourdes. Our guide, a nun, was terrific -- she made this visit very interesting and special. A short prayer was said at each stop. Overall, this ended up being a great way to see the gardens.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 15, 2024
- Teithiwr212 contributionsAn escape from the hordesCompared to the mayhem that is the Vatican Museums, the gardens were a wonderfully peaceful escape as they are off limits to the casual visitor. We took the walking tour (there is a bus, but this didn`t appeal to us) which went through most of the gardens surrounding parts of the City. We went at a fair pace and the guide wasn`t particularly knowledgeable (but did seem to have a master`s degree in stating the obvious) and was to keen to keep reminding us that under no circumstances were we to wander off. It was, however interesting to see the City from a different angle (especially St Peter`s) and we did learn a few fascinating facts. The tour ended with a visit to the overcrowded museums before were were left at the door of the Sistine Chapel to continue by ourselves. We were issued with earpieces, so even inside we could always hear the guide. A different activity from the usual, so worth booking (which you`ll have to do in plenty of time)Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 3, 2024
- KellyKAthens, New York39 contributionsThe best part of the VaticanThe Vatican Gardens was our favorite part of our visit to Vatican City. The gardens are so peaceful and gave us a peak into the private life at the Vatican. We were able to experience the serenity that popes and visitors find in the gardens. The history of the gardens was so interesting. The landscape and views are beautiful. We enjoyed this more than the overcrowded museum and rushed Sistine Chapel. It felt more sacred. We actually booked it by mistake and it ended up being the best mistake we made!Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 25, 2024

We took advantage of a particular guided tour which was available exclusively in the month of May and which was a sort of pilgrimage dedicated to Mary, with stops and prayers in front of many of the numerous images of the Madonna scattered throughout the greenery. The vastness of the Vatican Gardens is surprising, only with an aerial photo can one realize how much tree surface is protected within the walls of the Vatican City, 23 hectares! It was exciting and instructive to listen to the history of the Gardens and to be accompanied by the excellent Vincenzo to discover the most beautiful fountains and their water features, to gather in front of the perfect reproduction of the Lourdes Grotto and the various Marian icons. You walk a lot, although often in the shade of mighty centuries-old trees but in the presence of sun I recommend wearing a hat.

I enjoyed this very much, and the gardens really were spectacular. Tourists are driven around in a small bus with audio available in several languages. My only disappointment was that it was too short! It was described as being about 45 minutes, but really was only about 30. It did seem that we kind of whipped around the gardens and never got off the bus. More details? I liked it very much but it ended much too soon.

Gorgeous gardens but a poorly executed tour. This was my family’s biggest disappointment on our Italy trip. We all got on a bus with earbuds to plug into the side walls of the vehicle. The problem was if you sit along the center aisle of the bus the earbud cords aren’t long enough for use without putting your head into someone’s lap. Additionally if you are relegated towards the back of the bus, your views of the garden were obstructed by the bus frame. This tour could have had a far more personal touch with a guide or driver that spoke to the riders rather than just plug us into a recorded conversation. It was a “just check the box,” very lazy way to share these breathtaking views and left my family and others on our Tuesday, May 23rd tour really disappointed

We took the Vatican Museum official guided tour of the gardens - it was just painfully long. It took over 2 hours, including waiting 20 minutes for a lady who was late, a 10 minute bathroom break near the end, and a 10 minute explanation of the various cafes and dining possibilities in the Vatican for afterwards. Seeing the gardens was amazing, so we are glad to have done it now - but it was painfully slow and disorganized.

I took a 45 minute open bus tour of the Vatican Gardens. The bus stops at various points to take photos, but there is no extended stop. Since the gardens are huge, I found the tour by bus very pleasant, you get a good overview in a short time. The audio guide also gives information about each place visited. The bus is open in the summer, but can be covered in case of rain/cold. The bus leaves very punctually, be sure to be there about 15 minutes before. It is best to book tickets directly at the Vatican Museums website.

The Vatican Gardens far exceeded my expectations. They seemed to go on forever and contained a variety of trees, plants and flowers. One of the best things is being able to almost look directly at the Dome from almost any spot. We did the tour through the Vatican and learned so much about the grounds, some of its statues and monuments. Also learned about the radio station, train station an helicopter landing site located within the gardens. I would highly recommend a visit.

We were able to treat ourselves to this wonderful guided tour, booked directly on the Vatican website. Together with Miss Susanna and three other lucky tourists, we spent a couple of hours in this wonder! Well-kept garden and scattered with fountains, caves and archaeological remains of admirable beauty. From every point of the garden the view of the 'Cupolone' accompanied us for the duration of the visit. It was an unforgettable experience!

I chose this guided tour because it also allowed to visit the Sistine Chapel, whose tickets were nowhere to be found. And I have to say, it was quite a discovery. You can see St. Peter and the other buildings from a different and privileged vantage point. For example, the exterior view of St. Peter's Dome is visible from the gardens as close as possible. Interesting the route proposed by the guide.

Do they sell entry tickets to the garden just for walking around on my own or do I have to pay for a guided bus tour?

Hi! I want to reserve a guided tour of the Vatican Gardens for my mother and me, but she doesn't speak English, only French. The official website allows you to choose only between English and Italian as the language of the tour, so my question is:
Does the guided tour of the Gardens also come with an audioguide in multiple languages (including French)?
Many thanks for your help.

Buona visita

Where is the exact place that the bus tour to the Gardens start - a friend of mine bought a ticket 2 months ago and he missed the tour cause he was asked to wait in a wrong place
Written September 24, 2019
Hello, So sorry because I did not take a bus tour. We did it our own way, no guided tours for me. Good luck and enjoy

Do we have to pay a separate entry fee for the Gardens? Or is it included with the Vatican Museum ticket?
Written April 29, 2019
I believe it was included with the admission ticket of the museum. We were with a tour group so I unfortunately do not know if it was separate.
Written April 30, 2019
