Day and night, St. Peter's Square is marvelous. Rich in both political and architectural history, you can usually find it bustling but not oppressive. The colonnade embraces the Square and, by proxy, the world. The Square offers great access to the cathedral, which is accessible at most any time. Take the time to really walk the Square. Lighting is better... More

We visited on a very sunny day so the square looked even more impressive. The main building is St Peters Basilica and if you've done the walk to the dome you come down to the same level as the statues on top of the columns visible from the square. As you look at the Basilica to the left there are... More

As opposed to cities like Paris or Vienna, Rome strikes you as the city where people actually live and use it. Sometimes to the point like it seems, they are using it with intention to toss it away and rebuild later. Just not enough time now. Have to chat and drink some coffee, have to do million of other things... More

The expanse of the piazza, the lovely fountains, the facade of St. Peter's Basilica and, most of all, Bernini's sublime oval colonnade surrounding it make this a wonderful place to visit. Best seen very early in the morning (before 8) when it's empty and silent, and also just after sunset as the Basilica is framed by the glow of the... More

Always buzzing with activity throughout the day - it is very beautiful for photographs early in the morning or at/after sunset.

The entire square which is right in front of the St Peter's Basilica is the place where every Sunday Pope addresses the people. The symmetrical Pillars around the Piazza reflect the architecture of the Roman period. The place is usually crowded on Sundays, but still it is worth it.

Spent quite a bit of time here. Saw the Pope on the Sunday which was a wonderful treat (Im not religious). Amazing statues/columns. Quite a chilled place for reflection.
