The area
Neighborhood: Trastevere
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.

The monument deserves a few minutes of your attention.

The square, located in front of the Garibaldi bridge, and a few steps from the Tiber, really has nothing special except the monument erected in honor of the Roman poet Giuseppe Gioacchimo Belli from whom it takes its name.
In 1890 the square was called "piazza Italia" until in 1910 , ehen some illustrious Roman personalities of the time presented the idea of erecting and dedicating a monument to the great poet to the mayor of Rome.
The competition for the best design was announced and on April 22 the commission declared that the Sicilian sculptor Michele Tripisciano was the winner.
He eventually forfeited the money.
The monument deserves a few minutes of your attention.

Trastevere territory

Passed through this area close to Garibaldi Bridge and River Tiber into Trastevere. There are many bars and restaurants in close proximity and the area is a charming neighbourhood to observe whilst meandering through the many side streets.

Interesting bit of history

You will find this statue in a little piazza, a few hundred feet from the Tiber near Ponte Garibaldi.

This is Piazza G. G. Belli, with a statue commemorating Giuseppe Gioacchino Belli (1791-1863), whose more than 2,000 satirical sonnets (written in Roman dialect) on Roman life have made him a particular favorite of the Trasteverans.

The monument is located close to the Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere.

dedicated to Giuseppe Francesco Antonio Maria Raimondo Gioachino Belli (1791-1863), a porte well known for his poems in Roman dialect and for his strong attachment to Trastevere.

Monument to the Italian poet - Giuseppe Giacchino Belli
Apr 2015 • Couples
Piazza Giuseppe Giacchino Belli is a small piazza on the Trastevere side of the Tiber River in Rome. You can find it not too far from Basilica di San Crisogono. It is a relatively public space with grass, a couple of park benches and an interesting monument to the Italian Poet - Raimondo Gioachino Belli.

The monument was created by Michele Tripisciano in 1913 and placed here due to the Belli's apparent affection for Trastevere. Here you can see a standing Belli, upon a platform, as if about to recite one of his poems to a crowd of listeners.

There are faces added to the two ends of the monument with water spouts releasing water into two small basins. Also look for the muliti-faced pillar just to the left of Beilli. This is similar to pillars you will find on the historic Fabricius' Bridge.

In the end, not a priority attraction to see in Rome. Just have a quick look if you are making your way to the the city centre of Rome from Trastevere and passing by.
