Monti is a charming residential neighbourhood just in the heart of Eternal City where many romans still like to spend their own free time. I have lived in this area for couple of years while working in Rome. It is not that overcrowded with tourists like Trastevere or the streets near Via del Corso. Monti is one of the oldest areas in Rome and still has it's fascinating bohemian atmosphere with lovely caffees, alternative designer shops, many typical "tavern", wine bars and artisan shops. It is a great spot just to walk if you are tired of the rive of tourists near the Quirinal hill, the Colosseum, or the Santa Maria Maggiore basilica.

One of the most famous meeting point for local people in Rome is Piazza della Madonna dei Monti, or in local slang Piazza della Fontana. That can be very noisy in the evening, but if you walk just a bit you will find lovely places for any taste to spend your afternoon or evening. On Via dei Serpenti, for example, enoteca "Al Vino Al Vino" has high quality vines and some light delicious typical dishes. On Via Panisperna "Bottigleria Tre Scalini" is probably one of the most famous "vinoteca" in the neighbourhood, but it is very busy in the evening. In case you want to eat, you have to tell to the barman, that you want to stay in the queue.. you might wait up to half-an-hour before they call you.. but it's worth trying! The typical dishes are fabulous! In case you like Indian food, on Via Cimarra "Il Guru" could be good choice! On Via dei Capocci pizzeria "Il Tettarello" offers pizza which is admired by many romans! If you need an ice-cream after your dinner, just 20 m right on the Piazza degli Zingari there is a lovely little ice-cream place, which has wonderful artisan tastes. If you prefer a drink and walk on just other 20 m, you can spend the rest of your evening in calm and cozy atmosphere of "Libreria Caffee Bohemien" on Via degli Zingari.
These are just some places in Monti, which offer good quality for fair price! But as it is the area, which romans love, usually you find always high standards!

I also recommend to take your accommodation in this area. You can easily reach anywhere in the city centre by foot - all the tourist attractions and even the main railway statin. It means you spear in crowded and busy trafficed city a lot of time and you do not need to spend for taxi!

We just returned from a week long stay at The Avalon on Via Domenichino. What a great neighborhood. Close to everything, grocery stores, pharmacy, pastry shops, gelato shops, many restaurants, clothing stores, home goods. A short walk to Roma Termini and the bus depots. Santa Maria Maggorie is just up the street, it is a beautiful church. Being an elderly couple I was a little worried about what the area woukd be like. Do not worry, it was safe and the Italian people were so nice. Enjoy your trip. If you want further info, don't hesitate to contact me.

We rented a flat in this neighborhood and liked it. Plenty of places to eat, shops, a metro stop, mini markets, and at least two grocery stores. In addition it is an easy walk to the main train station, Termini. Lots of hotels all over. Cavour is the main street that runs the length of the area and there are some tourist attractions you can walk to as well including two of the best known churches in Rome.

This is a real neighborhood in the center; that is, far fewer tourists visit this area and you'll encounter a lot of interesting Romans here. More and more people are finding this great spot, but for now, it's more tourists who are in the know. You'll find some great vintage shops here and some lovely restaurants, but perhaps the best part of the neighborhood is a fountain on via dei Serpenti around the base of which people gather for beers and conversation. Go on a nice warm evening and check it out, but respect the local flavor. It's a neighborhood spot and should stay that way. At the fountain you'll find it easy to practice a little Italian, talk politics, get advice on the best off the beaten track places to visit, and more.

This area of Rome is the oldest "rione" (quartier), and you can still feel the history in the little things, like the shops, restaurants, churches and tiny streets with a great view (of the Coliseum, maybe). Defintively a place worth spending half a day visiting it, also to taste some special cuisine...

Italian food is delicious especially in Rione Monti. Every restaurant is good. Mostly good looking people in the restaurants and people who look like student at the square. You can enjoy city's sound drink cold beverage and sit under the statue.
