About
Conceived as a broad cultural campus, MAXXI is managed by a Foundation constituted in the July of 2009 by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities. The programming of the activities - exhibitions, workshops, conferences, shows, projections, educational projects - reflects MAXXI's vocation as a place for the conservation and exhibition of its collections but also, and above all, a laboratory for cultural experimentation and innovation, for the study, research and production of the aesthetic contents of out time. The MAXXI building is a major architectural work designed by Zaha Hadid, located in Rome's Flaminio quarter and featuring innovative and spectacular forms.

Neighborhood: Flaminio
The Flaminio area has been making a name for itself as a hub for contemporary architecture and art. Over the past decade, Flamino’s grassy knolls have seen the rise of cultural centers - amazing feats of architecture like the beautiful Ponte della Musica, the wavy contemporary art MAXXI Museum, and the futuristic Parco della Musica, a music complex where international names perform. Flaminio also has traces of the 1960 Olympic Games with Palazzetto dello Sport and Villagio Olimpico, the athlete’s Olympic village turned residential housing. If culture means a ball and a foot, keep your eye on the prize: Rome’s famed Stadio Olimpico soccer stadium is just a short walk across a bridge.

The building itself is beautiful artwork, one of the best works by late Zaha Hadid and her firm. Like it or not, the building is one of the masterpieces on the edge of today's architecture, so whatever exhibitions/evebts it has, it is worth visiting for all those who work as architects or have an interest in contemporary architecture.
Galleria 5 (the projecting part with a giant glass opening) was inaccessible when I visited due to preparatory works for the upcoming exhibition. Some of the galleries may be closed at certain times, so it is highly recommended for visitors to check about such a temporary closing of galleries.

The building was very intriguing, like most people say, and the exhibitions I saw (Aldo Rossi, Giacomo Bala, Thomas Hirschhorn) were topics that truly interested me.
However the circulation was pretty confusing cause galleries 1,2,3 weren't accessible from the front entrance area. Blaming the architect for this complicated design would be pointless at this point, so I would suggest the curators not to close the front door to gallery 3.

Utterly disappointed…the visit was finished in 10 minutes ! Apparently some spaces are currently closed which isn’t mentioned at a quick glance on the website. The staff at the entrance are supposed to inform the visitors which they did not in my case… so paying the full price for so little feels like a rip-off. The Zaha Hadid architecture could have saved the day but didn’t…if you want an impressive contemporary design for the art… see the Depot of the Boijmans van Beunigen museum in Rotterdam, and here in Rome, just forget about he Maxxi…Rome has so much more to offer

Located in Rome, the Maxxi Museum is one of the most influential architectural 'eye candy' projects worldwide. Aside from the installations spanning modern fashion, cinema and art, the building is worth visiting just to explore it's maze of geometrical components that lead to 5 floors of 'drop dead' incredible artwork. I was continuously mesmerized by the the Maxxi.

The building itself is amazing with all of the details. Very innovative.
Found it a little bit hard to find to the right places in the building but finally did it.
Really taken about the exhibition Sebastiao Salgado’s Amazonia. So breathtaking.

Among others museums in Rome with contemporary and modern art, MAXXI is the most expensive and the most distant from the city center. The architecture of the building is innovative and fascinating. Unfortunately it is the only thing worth visiting. Once we were in, we realized there was barely nothing to see and whatever we saw does not deserve being called art.

Half of the exhibits were closed and those remaining were a boring non art fashion history and a disgusting portrayal of mangled animals, not art just a clumsy political, effort from the PRC. Unfriendly staff standing around gossiping. Building really same old black and concrete boredom. The Emperor really does have no clothes. Restrooms sported seatless stainless steel prison toilets. God help the disabled.

Dear feuite,
Thank you for your visit and your time. These days just one gallery is closed to change over, did you visit all the museum galleries? Nine exhibitions are now open...
We are sorry you didn't appreciate artworks of Huang Yong Ping, one of the greatest chinese artists. We wish you changed your mind next visit.

Dear Arthur,
thank you so much!! But don't "forget Kolosseum and all the other stone rumbles": Rome can be both an ancient and contemporary city, don't you think? ;)
Come back soon :)

More than a museum, MAXXI is an institution dealing with contemporary, broadly understood, artistic creativity. In addition to the permanent exhibition, guests have exhibitions, laboratories, workshops, performances and symposia on the latest art. The museum is housed in a modern, thought-out, spectacular structure designed by Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid . She belonged to the group of the most talented contemporary architects, famous for projects almost impossible to implement. In the case of MAXXI, the architect's idea was transformed into reality thanks to the use of cement obtained according to an ancient Roman recipe. The building is located in the space where military barracks were previously . A beautiful and uniquely organized structure in every respect. It was a memorable experience.

How to get there
Brendan K

I was staying on the south side of Villa Borghese park. I took a cab to the Maxxi. There is a tram that runs along Via Flaminia which gets can take you to the Maxxi and return. I was there in August last year and it was not running on the day I was there. I walked back but it was a nice walk through some nice neighborhoods. The Maxxi is an amazing museum if you are a fan of contemporary art. I hope you get there.
