The area
Neighborhood: Trastevere
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.

How many times have we crossed it!
How many times have we been delighted to see the winding Tiber from this historic bridge!
It is a staple, an unmissable passage for every person who wants to take a walk through the center of Rome to Trastevere.
The bridge, which connects via dei Pettinari and Piazza Trilussa (the two banks of the river), is a must that cannot be missed in a tourist itinerary.
It offers exciting views of Rome, with a postcard background in which you can see the Dome of St. Peter.
This suggestive and romantic was built by Pope Sixtus IV of the della Rovere family (1471-1484), on the occasion of the Jubilee of 1475, to allow a direct link between the Trastevere district (and the Vatican) and the rest of the city.
The Pope wanted the bridge to bear his name as as stated in one inscription.
The bridge consists of four arches covered in travertine, has a circular opening in the center and is decorated with five papal coats of arms in marble.
Not to be missed.

One of Rome’s many bridges that cross the Tiber River, Ponte Sisto was built between 1473 and 1479 by Pope Sixtus VI.
This is a pedestrian and bike only bridge which crosses over from the city centre to Trastevere.
It’s immediately identifiable by the distinctive window-like, circular hole in the middle of the bridge.
At first, we wrongly thought that this was a decorative feature but in fact it was entirely practical. It was a simple but clever early-warning system for floods. Once water started to flow through the hole, Rome was on high-alert that a flood was imminent.
It also acted like a pressure relief valve. When the full force of rising flood waters hit the bridge, the hole reduced the pressure so that the bridge was not swept away.
We have crossed this bridge many times but it is most beautiful at night when you can see the lights and reflections on the water.

When heading southwest from Piazza Navona to Trastevere, you will cross a bridge over the Tiber River. This is Ponte Sisto.
It looks to be over 100 meters long. This stone bridge was very tasteful. The view from the bridge was also very atmospheric, and it took about five minutes to cross the bridge. Be sure to look out for the bridge when you go to Trastevere.

One of my favourite places in Rome and one of the best locations to people watch and take it all in. A beautiful bridge that links Trastevere and the city centre together. Come at night (or anytime really) and you will know what I mean.

my wife and i rented an apartment within view of this bridge. every night we loved being able to hear all the activity coming from the bridge. when we heard the drums, we knew it was time to go out for some fun. we would grab a esspresso from the cafe/bar close by and walk up and people watch and take in the culture around. the bridge is connected to a stairway that leads down to a walk that hovers just above the Tiber and is very festive. lots of food, vendors, drinks, and a lot of Foosball. everyone was nice and fun to be around, the Tiber is awesome and as close as you can get. take the time to cross the river, but stop and take it in, its a beautiful bridge with a lot of culture to take in and enjoy.

As you are paralleling the Tiber River approaching Via dei Pettinari, all the sudden, you find yourself on the Rome side of one of those historic bridges that you have to “walk on “ just because you think of the history of the bridge. The bridge was originally built in 200 AD by Caesar Marcus Aurelius, destroyed by floods in 700 AD, and rebuilt in 1400 AD. I got a great photo with St. Peter’s Basilica in the background.

This bridge spanning the Tiber was completed in 1479 and connects Tratevere with Regola was named after Pope Sixtus IV. The unique feature if this bridge is the oculus that will relieve pressure on the pillars in case of severe flooding. This is a pedestrian only bridge and is still lighted with gas lamps.

Ponte Sisto is an pedestrian bridge crossing River Tiber. You can have good views on both sides of the river particularly the dome of St. Peter's. It is learnt that the sunset views here are wonderful.

This is a great walking bridge to take in the scenes in the heart of Rome. It connects you to the fun and famous transverse area where there is great restaurants and fun bars. Try to hit it at sunset for a beautiful photo with the Vatican in the background.
