The area

Neighborhood: Vatican / Borgo
Frocked priests, colorful Swiss Guards, insistent souvenir shop owners, flag-waving tour guides, and pilgrims from around the world. This is the Vatican and Borgo, Rome's most recognized neighborhood which acts as Vatican City's front yard. Aside from the souvenir boutiques and a few food spots, the only business conducted here is papal. In the daytime, the tiny medieval sector bustles with holy activity, as visitors vie for elbow room, or stand in line for a visit. Once the sun sets, the neighborhood is transformed into a quiet and picturesque hamlet.

Beware of CAFE ARTE ITALIANA on via della Conciliazione near the Vatican. Off hand service, pushy for tips and extremely expensive. 2 x coffee, two single potions of apple tart. €42! €6.12 service charge
move on, plenty of good cafes in the same district.

This is the major street in the Borgo which runs from St. Peter’s Basilica to Castel Sant’Angelo and the Tiber river. The road was constructed between 1936 and 1950, when Mussolini, unfortunately, destroyed large sections of the area in front of St. Peter’s. The street is always busy, but provides a great view of the Vatican.

Via della Conciliazione is the best way to approach St Peters and the Vatican. We walked along this wide thoroughfare and the closer we got, the larger St Peter’s loomed - it was an amazing sight.
From the central Rome, we crossed Pont Sant Angelo, (probably Rome’s most beautiful bridge) and turned left in front of Castel Sant Angelo where we caught our first glimpse of St Peter’s in the distance, right at the end of Via Conciliazione.
Interestingly, the street looks as straight as a dart but in fact, the buildings on either side jut out at different points and don’t really line up very well at all. Traffic islands on both sides and rows of stone obelisk lampposts create a neat trick of making it look like a dead straight road.
Although the traffic can be heavy, the pavements on both sides are wide.

Via della Conciliazione is an important and significant road, and one with a lot of history, much of it modern. It is the road leading to and in front of Saint Peter's Basilica, in the Vatican. You get some really great views along this road. The best view is, I think of Saint Peter's Basilica, as you walk towards the great church. This is a view not to be missed.

Do not use this service. I cashed $1,300 at the rate shown (a very attractive rate) but was only given €676.30. I questioned this and was told that there was a commission fee of 19.90% of the transaction. I then said that i had changed my mind and please cancel the transaction only to be told that it was too late. $259 for a currency exchange is an absolute rip off.
Be warned. Be warned.

Don't ever eat in the restaurant named "Caffe'", Via della Conciliazione 4F (angle with Via della Traspontina)! You will get small portions and not tasty food for very high prices, no service at all, but you will pay extra money for the "service" included (from 5 euro!). No Wi Fi in the restaurant, no oil, vinegar, salt and paper on the tables, and if you ask them for cheese for your pasta they will bring it, sift it a bit and take away back! What a shame!

Via della Conciliazione is a straight avenue that links Castel Sant'Angelo (Rome) to Piazza San Pietro (Holy See) on the north and northeast side of the Tiber River. You can use road to cover the distance between these two attraction areas when visiting these attraction areas during your holiday.

There are some restaurants, souvenir shops and even another church by the name of Chiesa Santa Maria in Transpontina that you can visit along Via della Conciliazione. Otherwise, simply enjoy the view as you approach St. Peter's Basilica from the east. If you ware walking east towards the Castle, don't forget to turn around from time to time to see and take pictures of St. Peter's.

Tip: As you walk the distance between Castel Sant'Angelo to Piazza San Pietro, look for the Dragon Wall fountains on the side of the street. Here you can drink some fresh, cool and clean water or top up your water bottles. These are neat fountains for fun picture taking as well.

This Street leads to the Vatican entrance and St Peters Basicilica. It is a pedestrian thoroughfare. Today I had a nice reflection after a thunderstorm.
