    Wonderful day out
I debated coming after reading some of the negative reviews but the kids were desperate to go. However, I thought it was a lovely zoo. Animals didn’t look unhappy. There was such a huge variety of animals and never have I seen animals so clearly! They were not hiding away from visitors but coming to say hello! I think zoos are a personal choice with regards to your thoughts on captivity. However there were 4 beautiful bears here that had been rescued from the tourist trade. I like to think my visit went towards raising funds to support this. There are also some endangered species here as well as a very informative museum educating children on the damage of humans towards animal endangerment. If you don’t like zoos then this is not for you. If you are slightly on the shelf like me, I was not offended. The zoo was clean and the enclosures looked adequate. The kids had a ball. There was even a real helicopter there?! Random but fun,

    Great place for kids
Great activity with kids. I am glad we went in spite of some of the mixed reviews. Some of those reviews seem unfair, maybe some fellow Americans expecting to see Disneyland. It is a perfectly nice zoo. We paired this with a show at the San Carlino puppet theater which is in the same park.

    A good family day out!
I visited Rome in May 2023 with my husband and 1 year old son. We were looking for some less touristy things to do and decided to visit Rome Zoo. We bought tickets online well ahead of the date and managed to get a good discount - who doesn't love a discount! We had a really good day at the zoo and saw lots of animals. They all seemed to be looked after and we didn't have any trouble getting around with the buggy. The food at the cafe could have been a lot better - especially for Rome - it wasn't great, but it was lunchtime so we made do. We took the public bus from near the Colosseum right up to the Zoo, which was easy enough to do, even with my son's buggy, so getting there from central Rome isn't a problem if you don't want to walk.

    Fun and interesting
I was pleasantly surprised with the zoo. The places and areas for the animals are very nicely maintained and you can really see many kinds of animals. Just at the time when we were in the zoo, the bears, lions and tigers were awake, so it was even more interesting for us because it often happens that they are sleeping. We also watched the feeding of the penguins and it was really fun.

Depressed looking animals, poorly kept, expensive for what there was and doesn't seen to go on animal upkept it seems..Also smelt of weed in areas..

Honestly looked at reviews before we went and they were OK and just came back off holiday and can see people have the same views as my family and I..I have never been to such a terrible zoo, it was so sad, some birds had removed their feathers, animal mess left, lack of space and the areas looked so uncomfortable for the animals considering how beautiful the surrounding park was outside..

I do not recommend, I hope the place gets checked out as the animals really look like they're suffering, bored and uncomfortable .

We left within an hour or so, was just not nice to see.

Probably our best ever visit to a zoo which was definitely helped by being in the right spots at the right times. We managed to catch a lot of the animals at their feeding time, the wolves were fantastic. Also it was the best laid out so you didn't missing anything and had a natural flow so you saw all the animals. And every animal was out which surprised us with the heat of the day. Couple of cafe's inside brought a welcome restbite but many of the locals brought massive picnics.
The only pointless aspect seemed to be you had to pre-book online (covid i assume) but all you had to do was stand there and do it online there and then. Not sure of the purpose of it.
Grand day out though.

The zoo is not equipped for these animals. The conditions are poor and not enough space for the animals. I did not see a single zoo keeper during my visit and there was no water for the penguins at all. Some animals looked injured and sad.

We love animals and zoos and tend to include them in our holidays, so we were delighted we could visit the one in Rome.
There's so much to love about this zoo. Many of the enclosures are large, providing both public and off show areas and we saw plenty of enrichment.
The information boards are fantastic, especially by comparison with many UK zoos as they provide so much information on many levels. Despite visiting numerous zoos for decades and having done some basic University level courses, there was information we'd never seen before presented in engaging ways. It was lovely to be treated as an adult and have information available that wasn't purely for children.
We were privileged to watch behaviour from the African wild dogs and rhinos we'd never seen before. The zoo is easy to find your way around and the toilets were clean and well maintained.

It was such a shame then that we couldn't get vegetarian food despite there being options on the menu. We asked clearly for a veggie option and believe we were understood as both the member of staff and another customer laughed. We clearly asked for the tomato, mozzarella and basil sandwich, something that is universal throughout Italy. Despite this another member of staff tried to keep giving us ham, and when we did receive our sandwiches they were inedible. The bread was soggy and slimly and the filling consisted of lettuce leaves and a couple of tasteless slices of tomato.
We were at the zoo all day so to avoid being hungry we could only eat crisps chocolate, and croissants which was hardly the healthier lunch we were looking for.
It was a real shame as the meat sandwiches and pasta looked of good quality.
I was completely surprised by the difference in attitude to those that choose not to eat meat at a zoo ! And from our experience in the UK.

To add insult to injury, directly outside the zoo was a large food stand where the member of staff spoke English well and who offered a great choice of sandwiches to suit everyone

So if you're planning on visiting this zoo and don't eat meat, take a packed lunch.

How this is rated at 4 stars is beyond me, the people leaving good reviews must lack as much common sense as the people working there because I cant get this experience out of my head it was that bad from start to finish. The condition these animals are living in is absolutely appalling. There is a serious lack of care for all of these animals. The monkeys especially are very poorly looked after, all the animals looked malnourished living in the most disgusting enclosures i’ve ever witnessed. I can hands down say this zoo was the WORST experience of my entire life.

There were dead animals in several of the animal enclosures which may I add, were far too small for a human being to live in let alone any of the animals. I am by no means an animal psychologist but all of these animals look extremely depressed.

I’m not sure what they’re doing with the money made off the tickets purchased for this place but by no means is any or that money going towards cleaning the place up for all the animals that live there. Please avoid this zoo at all costs, I wish I had of read the reviews before attending as this place needs shutting down completely

Visited the zoo today and we were absolutely appalled with what we saw. Started in the petting zoo where we saw 9 goats with over grown hooves cramped into an enclosure which was too small. We were hopeful but it only got worse. Almost all of the enclosures we’re inadequate for the miserable animals they housed. The monkeys had scraggly coats and were in poor condition. The otters were housed with a binturong, a solitary animal, which seemed bizarre. The white tiger was pacing in an enclosure no bigger than an average living room. The elephant looked emaciated, with visible hip bones and spine. If you care about animals do not give your money to this zoo. If I could rate the experience a zero, I would.

If I could give 0 stars I would. This is by far the worst zoo I have ever been too in my life. I’m distraught actually. Where do I even start. Enclosures are tiny, my bedroom is bigger. There are dead animals lay in enclosures. The monkeys all have no hair on their backs and look extremely malnourished. There was a tree being cut next to the monkeys and they’re were all crying absolutely distraught. Enclosures also are so dirty, the dirt in the penguins pool (if you would even call it that) was green and disgusting. They have one elephant that had the littlest enclosures ever, the elephant wanted to sit inside the full time because it must be so so depressed. All animals were cooped up in a corner. Not one animal in that zoo looks happy, in fact they look so sad and fed up. Also very rude staff, no patients for people. ABSOLUTELY DIABOLICAL how this zoo is still open.

After reading some of the reviews we were sceptical about what we would find at the zoo in Rome, but we still gave it a go.
Myself and my partner really enjoyed our time here, and we’re massive animal lovers so we love zoos. We didn’t think the animals looked depressed like some reviews say, although some exhibits could have been cleaner we didn’t think any looked particularly bad. With the amount of space the zoo has located where it is we thought the exhibits were well sized and we had a great view of most of the animals (the only things we didn’t see were the Binturong and Zebra). The zoo is massive so prepare to be there for a few hours. The entrance price is also very reasonable. Overall we had a good time and it was a nice experience away from the busy streets of Rome.

I wish I hadn’t visited this zoo - it’s like zoos were 50 years ago with very little thought for what each animal needs - more a visitor spectacle. The animals looked as if they had given up hope. Some of the monkeys had skin issues (bald and scabby backs) - the sea lion swimming in dirty water with no enrichment was heartbreaking …. Couldn’t bear to see the rest of the animals altho I believe they have lions etc.
You will do better looking at David Attenborough videos and with no guilt. 😞
