The area

Address
Neighborhood: Monteverde
Above the city on the Janiculum hill, Monteverde is Rome’s popular "getaway" neighborhood, coveted for its greenery. Rome's largest urban park, Villa Pamphili, is the area's centerpiece with affordable prices and peace and quiet. Monteverde is just far enough away from the center to feel like you’re on a Roman holiday and close enough to feel the lure of Rome's chaos. Though its downside is the lack of scheduled public transport, this family-oriented area is literally a well-deserved walk in the park.

It is located in Monteverde, a popular neighborhood coveted by the Romans who took refuge there for its rich vegetation; it includes a large urban park of 184 hectares and is located just outside the walls of the Janiculum. Villa Doria Pamphilj is a majestic and important historical residence. The guided tour of the luxurious rooms and the superlative Gallery, with earphones, allowed us to get to know and appreciate well-known and lesser-known masterpieces displayed inside the Villa. There was no time to visit the beautiful park.

It is one of the largest public parks in Rome and covers 180 hectares. Belonged to the Pamphili Family since the 17th century. It was opened to the public in 1972. In 1960 it was divided into two parts to make room for the construction of the Via Leone XIII° better known as Via Olimpica. The sculptor Alessandro Algardi and the painter Giovanni Francesco Grimladi worked on it in collaboration with the botanist Tobia Aldini regarding the gardens. Inside there is the Old Villa, the Casino del Bel respiro, the necropolis, the columbarium of Scribonius Menophilus, Palazzo Corsini, various fountains and more.

If you have the time and desire to be outdoors, this could be an ideal option.
In addition to Villa Borghese, Villa Pamphili is one of the most beautiful parks in the heart of Rome.
It is also one of the largest, after the one on the Appia Antica, with an area of approximately 184 hectares, reachable from 4 main entrances.
It is a wonderful place, surrounded by greenery!
Perhaps the most suggestive location in all of Villa Pamphili is “Il Casino del Bel Respiro”, where it doesn't seem to be in Rome, but in the open countryside.
It was strongly desired by Prince Camillo Pamphili in 1644 to exhibit his collection of ancient statues.
The Casino del Bel Respiro was designed by the sculptor Alessandro Algardi, to express the magnificence of the family.
The palace, the furnishings and the gardens were inspired by famous gardens and parks, in particular those of Villa Adriana in Tivoli, where Algardi went to study and draw.
The interior of the palace has numerous rooms and halls embellished with painted stucco.
Perhaps the most beautiful place is the secret garden, embellished with hedges cut in such a way as to form various designs, including the lily, which is the coat of arms of the family.

The villa is majestic and can be admired in a bewitching and evocative way.
But the immense park that surrounds it is a real marvel.
A lung of green that caresses your body and mind.
Ideal for a healthy and relaxing walk.
To be seen!

Park only, with very few facilities or signage. The Villa is closed to the public. There is a cafe at the Leone street entrance with the only bathroom in the entire park. This is also the best entrance (Leone /Villa Pamphili bus stop) as the walk is downhill from here.

Stayed at Hotel Villa Pamphlet and this park is across the street. First day took a 7 mile hike all around and explored most of it. It is the largest park in the center of Rome. Very safe. Trails everywhere for walking and biking. Several fountain spread around with clean water for drinking. Hours are 8-8. The eastern side has most of the buildings and structures. The western side is mostly woods and open fields. Visited after one if the hottest summers and the grass was scorched from the heat and lack of water as to be expected.

This park which could be a paradise is often closed for meteorological reasons. It can but very loud especially at the weekend because of all the racket caused by the kids and youngsters playing football although it's forbidden. There are too few benches and often they are in bad conditions. It's badly kept and you never see a gardener; with all the open space they could have opened a botanical garden inside but nobody cares. The only gardener (?) activity you see is when they cut trees in a brutal way and never replace them. What a great pity and what an emblem of italian mentality: what is public is not mine!

It's a beautiful place that I've been going to for a long time. Over the years, the care of greenery has improved although many critical issues remain, such as completely abandoned greenhouses. There is a complete lack of signage for the various points of interest and for finding the villa itself.

We wanted to visit the Doria Pamphilj Park and tried to prepare for the trip via map and google. We only could find out that no public transport takes you there so we decided to take a bus that gets us as close as possible.
We started at piazza St. Pietro and took the bus from Cavalleggeri down the Gregorio VII road. The first problem was to get a ticked since there was no machine in the bus, you have to buy a ticked in advance at a small coffee shop or elsewhere.

We got off the bus a little late at the station Circonvallazione Cornelia- De La Salle because there is no display that shows the next stop and no possibillity to talk to the driver. So we decided to walk down the Via Aurelia Antica in direction Via Doria Pamphilj- a bad decision! Don't do it! There are no sidewalks and though it looks like a small road on the map there is heavy traffic. On both sides are around 2,20m high walls so you have no chance to escape and all the fumes are trapped forcing you to inhale.
We walked down this Horror for about 30mins to get to the park.
After slipping through the gate it was like entering a complete different world, the park is really nice, green and quiet. Its worth to visit but prepare your journey carefully maybe take a Taxi or the Bus 98 to Piccolomini.

After recently moving to Rome for 9 months, discovering this amazing park only 15 minutes walk from my house was a result! It really is huge, I have only recently been around the whole thing. There are places to relax, forests to explore, the stunning house to see and lots of interesting fountains too. The church is really stunning and although you can't go inside, the outside is so intricate. Lots of areas suitable for everyone! There is even a small bar/cafe with public toilets up in one of the corners (I did not discover this until recently!). Huge and beautiful, don't miss the waterfall walkway that goes under the river than runs into the lake. My favourite place in Rome.
