Neighborhood: Trevi
A non-stop photo and souvenir opportunity, Trevi is all about action. From early morning through the wee hours, the piazza surrounding Trevi Fountain hosts a never-ending flow of tourists hoping to make a wish or take a selfie. Clever restaurants, charming gelaterias, uncanny bars, kitsch shops, and a range of hotels make up the local landscape. Beneath the bustle are the remains of an ancient neighborhood that you can visit by heading over to a repertoire cinema and asking for a peek underground. There is something for everyone, but if peace and quiet are what you seek, plan to visit in the early morning hours.

What a find!!!!

Right by Trevi Fountain. If you’re looking at the fountain it’s to the left of the fountain and back about 20 meters. It’s a small church with a gate in front. Free entry and absolutely gorgeous

A refuge for prayers and meditation far from the madding crowds
Sep 2019
A cute little church! worth popping in for a visit while stopping at the Trevi. It's rather small but there are some really nice baroque paintings on the walls and ceiling.
It’s one of the most antique churches dedicated to the Immacolata Concezione di Maria Vergine and the name means "Saint Mary of the intersecting road". It was built by Belisario, Giustiniano’s general, in the 6th century in reparation for deposing Pope Saint Silverius in 537.
It is located on Piazza dei Crociferi in rione Trevi, near the Fountain of Trevi. Previously the church had been known as Santa Maria in Fornica.
The singular travertine façade is rich of mannerist hints in the use of decorations; in addition, there are several fake windows. The interior embodies a single nave with four lateral chapels. The church’s vault is rich of golden stuccos, decorated with paintings by Antonio Gherardi.
Pope Pius IX granted the church to the Congregation of the Missionaires of the Precious Blood, who still serve the church. The relics of their founder, St. Gaspar del Bufalo ( a native Roman) are inshrined in a side chapel.
A refuge from the hordes of tourists and the noise in Piazza Trevi.

A hidden gem - escape the Trevi crowds...
Aug 2019
Just around the corner from the Trevi Fountain you’ll find this beautiful little church. It doesn’t look much from the outside, but once inside you’ll find a beautiful, peaceful haven away from the hordes flocking to see the fountain. The contrast is startling. It may not be as popular as nearby attractions but we know which we preferred.

Small church near the Trevi fountain has been on the site since 6th century
Mar 2019 • Couples
This current church was rebuilt around 1575 on the site of church founded in 537AD. So a church near the fountain and the intersecting roads has been there for a long time. It is nice church. Step in while you are there to see Trevi fountain.

Tiny church close to Trevi Fountain
Mar 2019 • Solo
This is a hidden church, just to the left of Trevi Fountain up the street. The exterior is rather plain. Upon entering it is very nice. The interior is decorated with artwork and gold. For a tiny neighborhood church it is very ornate. It is not crowded, despite its location. A nice place to visit.

Baroque style, beautiful, never crowded

This is one of several hundred smaller churches you'll find in Rome and throughout all of Italy.
I was visiting Trevi fountain and got so sick of the heat and crowds at the fountain -everyone fighting for a selfie with the fountain in the background was just not my thing.
So I ducked into the church for a respite from both. I was so happy to be in a peaceful spot for a whole hour and a half. Bonus: Saturday Vigil mass was at 6:30 pm. I think in total there were not even a dozen churchgoers.
There was a sheet with the entire mass in Italian, but since I am Catholic, it was pretty easy to follow - I know the routine of kneeling, standing and sitting pretty well. Most of the responses were also in Latin, which is also familiar.
There is an image in bronze of San Gaspar di Bufalo, under glass, on the left side of the church. A basket with paper and pen is also there for your prayer intentions. I read somewhere he has an incorrupt body too!
Take a good half hour to admire the paintings, architecture inside.
The church is quite unassuming from the front.
I like to stay and pray at as many church sites as possible, whenever I am on tour.
Although it is not posted, please be aware that this is a church, and one must dress modestly.

SAINT MARY’S OF THE CROSSROADS
Apr 2017 • Couples
This church was not opened the day we came by. It is located just a short distance from the Trevi fountain. The exterior is austere compared to other churches located around the city. There are 2 plaques with Latin inscriptions telling a little about the church (help from Google translate).

If you are facing the Trevi Fountain this little church is just down the street to the left of the fountain and what a beautiful little church it is. Well worth taking the time to go in and admire the lovely interior.

Lovely Church!
Dec 2016 • Couples
Santa Maria in Trivio is one of the oldest churches dedicated to the immaculate conception of the Virgin Mary and the name means "Holy Mary at the intersection of three roads." If you are standing in front of the Trevi Fountain, look down the street on your left and you will see the church. The church has had several names over the years - Santa Maria a Trevi as well as Santa Maria in Fornica. The unique travertine façade is full of Mannerist decorations; there are also false Windows. The Interior has a nave with four chapels. The ceiling of the church is full of fillers in gold decorated with important paintings by Antonio Gherardi.
