It’s kind of grungy, there’s heaps of street art, the locals are friendly and the food is great and you’re not surrounded by only other tourists.
Definitely a great place to come back to after the hustle and bustle of inner Roma.

Always an interesting neighborhood, we were back in Ostiense yesterday for a street art tour with Scooteroma. Saw some street art we knew from years before but also striking new work, and learned more about the background of the neighborhood as well as the street art movement.

I suppose, for most of us, Rome is largely about glories of the past, whether it be the crumbling remnants of the Empire, the mediaeval splendour of the Centro Storico or the propagandist drama of the architecture of more recent decades.
Ostiense offers something a bit different and very much of the present. It is dotted with street art of various kinds and levels of skill. These range from the usual doodles, stickers and stencils under the road bridges to entire facades, whole blocks long, elaborately painted with colourful images.
I was only in the area briefly, at the beginning of a walk along a nearby stretch of the city walls and I feel that I could have devoted considerably more time to wandering the neighbourhood in search of artistic gems.
Definitely worth adding to your itinerary as a refreshing contrast to all that wonderful history.
On a practical note, be aware that these artworks are quite a long walk away from Ostiense train station.

The area is known for graffiti murals and bars/nightclubs. Even though some of the buildings are run down i felt quite safe there. You can reach it by the metro station Piramide. It has also some good restaurants.

We were staying an hour outside of Rome, and our train stopped here, rather than catch a metro, we walked around the area, which in our mind it is bohemian, lots of street art and pop up markets, (however in some ways verging on skanky), if you are into street art, this your place, however, probably, better to hang around the main attractions your, average tourist, (near the train station).

The area displays some of the best street art Rome has to offer and I highly recommend a short graffiti hunt around. There is just a small region where one can spot the art I attach in my photo which I witnessed with my own eyes after searching beforehand. Start with the famous
Man with the slip by Aloha in Via degli Argonauti. Then go to Alexis Grigoropoulos graffiti in Via Ostiense 122 (a young student killed by police in Athens), the amazing coloured faces by Blu in via del Porto Fluviale 5F (a building where the homeless were housed for some time), the Fish’n’kids by Agostino Iacurci -in via del Porto Fluviale 67 and the masterpiece Jumping off Wolf by ROA in Via Galvani covering a whole building in the crossroads with via Nicola Zabaglia (a large she-wolf representing the symbol of Rome). I can try to be more specific in detail if anyone needs more help. If you spot the graffitis on the map, you'll see its easily doable even on foot in 30'.

We went to visit the neighborhood as it was near our hotel and friends had recommended to visit it but from my point of view there are much nicer places to visit in Rome. It is true that it has some very artistic graffitis but it is quire dirty.

Perhaps this just applies to the particular area of Ostiense we stayed in, but it seemed like there was a lot more going on at night compared to daytime. And I don't mean that in a positive way. Dodgy people drinking on street corners, doing drugs etc.. Not a place I'd feel safe walking around in after dark. Also not very clean.

We are looking for affordable but safe places to stay in Rome in September. We are considering Crossroads hotel. Is this a safe area to walk around at night if we come back from sightseeing in the city center

Hello! We felt completely safe when visiting Ostiense area but it was day time. The hotel you chose seems a nice one and at just 300m from Piramide station. Personally I found the area to be a very interesting one but bare in mind you are not on foot within some minutes from what is known as Rome historical centre.
