We learned something very important on this trip....a private or semi-private guide makes a huge amount of difference. We booked an "ancient Rome" tour with a private guide. The tour was 3 1/2 hours long and started at the Pantheon. The amount we learned and the level of increased enrichment of the experience was so worth the 200 euro that it cost.

A highly trained guide in Rome must spend 5 years studying Roman history (and I think this is beyond college). Find a way to cut back somewhere else and get the private guide. And beginning the tour at the Pantheon is the perfect way to go.

This was fairly high on my list and I stood in The National Roman Museum staring at it for quite a long time. It’s a special and emotionally evoking, Greek Bronze sculpture because not many , of this type, from 330 BC have survived. Archeologists know it is Greek and know it was buried in Rome in anticipation of a huge sacking by The Goths. The detail in the scarred face and the sinewy muscled body are truly mesmerizing. It appears that The Boxer took a lot of punches to the face, indicated by a broken nose. The internet thinks The Boxer has lost the fight. But, since The Boxer is still wearing the equivalent of a boxing glove, I tend to believe The Boxer is getting ready to go back in, for another beating. This has to be in the top five things for tourists to see in Rome.

I couldn't have imagined doing these sights without a tour guide. Although our group was quite large, 25 people our guide I think she was called Valentina was calm and cheerful at all times. We could always hear her everyone had headphones and she was considerate of everyone. This was a general tour of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, but covering enough depth for those with more knowledge. She always asked us if we had questions so there was ample opportunity for any enthusiasts. An excellent way to see these sights.

Perhaps we were just unlucky. We got a terrible inexperienced tour guide with broken english, and he basically ruined our day. I understand people start somewhere...but i dont expect to prearrange our tour, paying top dolor with Viator and then get left to change on their sub contracting a third party guide. I could have picked up a guide outside the Colossuem for a lot less. 90% of our group were disappointed, We were suppose to see the Colossuem, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill Tour. We were only brought to 2 our of the three. Our group said they would individually send in complaints. I am not sure how the others got on...but Viator ignored our complaint (9 people paying 58€ each) and did very little to take an interest in our bad experience or provide any type of after sales support or apology. I wouldnt recommend this company. (Complaint Ref- Viator #BR-584664369)

HORRIBLE. Do not use this company. Guide spoke such broken English that we could not understand him. Not organized at all and because he had a communication issue he came across as not knowledgeable. We were so looking forward to this part of our trip and it was totally ruined. This company is sub par in comparison to the Walks of Italy tour company we have used int the past. Stay away.

Be very careful about booking this tour through Viator. TripAdvisor owns this company. There is no clear address to meet for the tour. They gave us a Newspaper stand. No physical address. We asked for 2 hours all 6 in our party different people, the attraction, Restaurants. You name it! Could not find. We called the provided phone number. No Answer. We missed the tour. We requested a refund. Says 2 - 7 days for a reply. 60 days.
"Too Bad So Sad" you missed the tour. Period. The onus is on you!
We have done many tours, customer beware!

I attended the Ostia Antica and River Tour on the Tiber back to Rome with Ancient Rome-Private Day Tours and was absolutely satisfied even though I attended the italian one. I`m not that good in italian yet, but Claudio "the Tour Guide" speaks absolutely clear and slow, so I also was able to understand (thank you :-) ). With his great knowledge and especially his enthusiasm he can make a really excite and thrill out of History, and you can imagine how life was back in early years. Will be staying in Rome for 2 more years and it won`t be my last tour with Ancient Rome. Many more to go and to see.

Michael was so willing to share his knowledge and a true gentleman and great driver. Irene was amazing and so educational. Raphaella was perfect at the Vatican.

We took the Ancient Monuments of Rome Small Group Tour with Skip-the-Line Pass through Mea ToursEvents. This was NOT a skip-the-line tour. We waited in line for a very long time while others passed by on both sides of us. Luckily our tour guide Louise was able to provide us with lots of information of what we were about to see (at the Coliseum). She was a fantastic tour guide. However, because of the length of time we spent waiting in line, our actual time inside was cut short.
We did 3 "Skip-the-Line" Tours while we were in Rome. The 2 through City Wonders Tours were both as they said...no waiting in line. This one was not.

My daughter and I are here for the weekend and we wanted to do some tours while here but without having to rush around all day so this half day tour of the Colosseum and the Forum seemed like the perfect compromise.
We were met at our hotel by our guide Allessandro who was warm and friendly and spoke excellent English.
We took a cab to the Colosseum and on the way he pointed out many things of interest that were not part of our tour.
We arrived at the Colosseum and our guide ushered us through the huge crowds outside and got us in very quickly.
Once inside he showed us round at our own speed taking time to give us full explanations and also finding some spaces away from the crowds and also helping us to take some great pictures as well.
When we finished there we then walked over to the Forum where he did as good a job as he had at the Colosseum. We went round at our own speed and he took the time to make sure that we were happy with what he was telling us and again ushered us away from the crowds but without missing the things we wanted to see and also more great pictures.
It really was worth paying a bit extra for a private guide as I feel that this enabled us to the most out of the tour.
I would highly recommend this tour and I should add that it was recommended to me by the concierge at my hotel with whom I was in regular contact before arriving in Rome.
