Having toured buildings in EUR and walked around in the heat, my wife and I walked along to the Piazza Marconi. The grand fascist architecture was alluring and we looked at Google and decided that the murals in the museum might be interesting (they were incomplete but still of interest).
At the entrance there was a sign directing us to another door. We turned and went to find it. We had walked about 10 metres when a lady dashed out of the building and asked if we wanted to enter. That's the first time I've every been chased into a museum!
We were inside for over 2 hours and there were no other visitors. The exhibits were most engaging and represented all aspects of traditional Italian folk art and craft; religious and secular. At every turn in every gallery there was something unexpected or interesting. Could have stayed much longer and will return one day to really have a good look.

Whilst out of Rome, so easy to get to by metro.
In mid-week we had all the place to ourselves (one other couple leaving).
Fantastic displays as you wander round.
Reasonable priced and so cool inside.
Try it for something a little different.

On the 1st sunday of every month, the State Musea in Italy are free! So today, we choose one of them to visit. We picked the Museo Nazionale degli Arti e Tradizioni Popolari (MAT), because it advertised an interesting temporary exhibition on Textile Art, and because it is situated off the beaten tourist track on the South side of Rome, in the EUR district. The museum has its own collection of objects, clothes, tools, about everyday life in Italy. All well displayed, with lots of info in light and airy halls. The "Off Loom" Fiber Art temporary exhibition is simply wonderful. Even the loo is tastefully tiled in black and white, and leads on to a huge balcony, where you can view the piazza Marconi. On Sunday we could park the car free at the back of the museum. The EUR district is worth a stroll all by itself, with its striking architecture. It has been built under Mussolini for the planned world exhibition of 1942, which never took place for obvious reasons. But the buildings, the boulevards, the piazzas are still there. Today most of them are government buildings (no wonder, they have lots of room). There is also a lake and a lot of green. Metroline B will take you to it. A breath of fresh air for all those who want to escape from yet more ancient Roma and baroque buildings.

First of all, this museum is south of downtown and not in an área frequented by tourists. It is in the área called the EUR (which are the Italian initials for a world's fair that Mussolini ordered to be developed to honour 20 years of fascism). This part of town is a place out of time, but not out of the Ropman Days. It is the masterpiece of fascist architecture that was supposed to resurrect the dominance of Roman hegemony. So for that reason alone, the buildings are interesting from the outside and worth the effort to see.
However, the museum itself is another story. When we arrived we gave a 10€ bill to the people at the desk. That was to pay for two people at 4€ each. So all they needed for change was two euros. However, the two of them were unable TO MAKE CHANGE AND UNWILLING TO GO GET ANY. They said that if we wanted to visit, we needed to go to a bar and get change. After nearly deciding to forget it, we did get change and returned.
The first room had some signage in English, but the rest of the museum had almost none. The enormous space of the museum dwarfed the ítems in it. And after the initial room with carts and wagons, the displays left us scratching our heads as to what this museum was trying to portray. We even took pictures of empty cabinets. As we wandered further into the cavernous museum, things did improve. There were some interesting ítems, but miost of them were from the early 1900s and it seems were largely collected all at once and then donated and this became a large empty space in which to deposit them.
I think Italians themselves would most enjoy this museum. It is like visiting some provincial or county museum that displays ítems from life in a century gone by. More interesting if you had heard stories of what life had been like from your grandparents. For 4€, it is a toss-up as to whether it was worth it. If you have extra days in Rome, it might be worth it, if you are strapped for time, don´t bother.

The exhibitions could kill all your curiosity and passion in history. All the items were displayed in an extremely old way, and there are only staffs working on tickets kiosk. 千万不要去这个所谓的国家历史博物馆，里面的文物都以极度古老的方式陈列在柜子里，说明文只有意大利语。展览厅高大、阴森，根本不想让人走进，等你走过一个暗暗的展柜，它在后面突然亮了。从未见过这么差的国家博物馆，让人怕怕的景象见照片。

This museum is just out of the city centre. Nothing special. This is about Italian culture. I went here because my hotel is located close by.No need to make an effort to come here.

If you have some days to visit Rome I recommend you this museum, specially if you are interested in the popular Italian traditions, something which you can't see in the most important museums in the centre. The ticket costs 4?. I found specially good an exposition with some clothes and objects from every region of Italia (Toscana, Basilicata, Piemonte, Umbria, Sicilia...). Pitty it's in the EUR, a zone with large buildings and any trees, built during the fascism which I didn't like very much...

Housed in the building opposite the one where the Museum of Civilizations is located, the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions is part of the enormous museum complex of EUR. Despite being little known and consequently usually overlooked by most tourists who come to Rome, it is very pleasant and interesting to visit. In the immense halls of this museum you will be able to observe means of transport and work tools, traditional clothes and even processional machines which paint a very realistic picture of what life, religiosity and popular customs were like in past centuries. The sections dedicated to eighteenth-century Neapolitan nativity scenes and the one concerning games and puppets are also beautiful.

This museum is located opposite the new museum of civilizations near the Marconi obelisk of Eur. Inside there are costumes, tools and utensils from various eras and from all Italian regions. I suggest to the management, in the absence of an internal refreshment point, to place at least one drink dispensing machine at the entrance, given that the museum is located in Eur in the middle of nowhere.
