Our family (me, my husband and our 5 year old daughter) signed up the early morning Vatican/Sistine chapel tour in December 2019. We thought that it would be less crowded at 7am, but we weren't the only ones who had that idea. It was definitely less crowded that during the day, but there were still a lot of people lined up for the tour. The tour size was nice - about 10 of us with one tour guide. We still had to wait in a line in the morning and it was pretty chilly given it was in late December. The tour last about two hours - they provided us with headsets so that we could hear our tour guide, which was a great way to do the tour. We went through the various halls (tapestries, etc) and went to the Sistine Chapel, which was crowded but I'm guessing not as crowded as later on during the day. We had bought our daughter a scavenger hunt book called Mission Rome which was great for her since the tour was otherwise a bit boring for her. We had certain things to find in the Sistine Chapel and as well as the Vatican which she was really interested in. So we ended up staring up at the ceiling for quite a while in the Sistine Chapel. Our tour ended outside of the Sistine Chapel, and we were free to go into the Vatican which we did afterwards. All in all, it was an interesting tour - it was still crowded in the early morning hours, but probably the best way to see it if you can wake up early enough!
