The area

Neighborhood: Trastevere
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.

This was not even on our list when we hastily planned a long weekend in Rome from Naples. Fortunately, we’d met a born and raised Roman on our travels and contacted her for some suggestions. She directed us here and so glad she did. The park at the top of the hill is nice and the views of the city from here are likely the best you will find. Along the park there are several spots to stop for a look and the views but the best and most popular is at Piazza Guiseppe Garibaldi. Here you will get some fantastic and sweeping views of the city. There will likely be some live music and also there are a couple little bars and food trucks where you can get a small snack or some beverages to enjoy the view for a little while. We came up the hill from the north and left to the south and saw the Fontana dell’Acqua Paola on the way down the hill to the bustling and popular Trastevere neighborhood where there are many great restaurants for a meal.

We decided to go to Gianicolo Hill to look at the panoramic view of Rome as advised on Trip Advisor. The first stop is called Passeggiata del Gianicolo or you can go further up to Piazzale Giuseppe Garibaldi. Following the advice of a TA reviewer, we decided to go from St. Peter’s Square, so here are the instructions:

Go to St. Peter’s Square and face St. Peter’s Basilica. There are columns to the right and to the left. Follow the columns to the Left about ¼ of the way, go through them and you will find yourself at the corner of Via Paolo VI and Piazza di S. Uffizio. In front of you will be a sign indicating Terminal Gianicolo, follow the sign and go to the underground and take your first Left turn, you will then take a moving pedestrian walkway. Follow it to the end and take the elevator on your Left (If you want to take a break, go to Level 5 where there is a nice bar and toilet facilities; it was very quiet because the Pope was not having an event that day but we were told that if the Pope was scheduled to have a public event, the bar area would be very busy) to Level 1. Take a Right turn and exit the parking garage, you will see the Ospedale of Bambino Gesu (hospital) in front of you; on the right is a Bus stop for bus 115 or 870 (bus comes every 15 minutes). You can take either of these and it will take you to Passeggiata del Gianicolo and to Piazzale Garibaldi. From either of these places you have a great panoramic view of Rome. At P. Garibaldi you will find several mobile Bars selling snacks. To get down to Travestere, get back on Bus 115 in the same direction to the end where you will get off at Viale di Trastevere, close to Via G. Induno.

Bus 115 has a circular route so you could catch it on Viale di Trastevere (close to Via G. Induno) and go up the Gianicolo hill.

Recommendation: if you have done all your sightseeing in Rome or if you want to get away of the crowds, this is a good place to go to for a panoramic view of Rome. I would recommend you get a one day transportation ticket (6 euros) or a 3 day transportation ticket (16.5 euros) so you do not have to worry about having fare tickets. I also recommend the Aventine Hill view, although it is not as panoramic as the Gianicolo one, you get a closer view of the sights.

Our guide drove us to the top of this hill to see the beautiful views of Rome. It was an overcast day, but it was still a beautiful view. I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't full of tourists (mainly locals). It was actually very relaxing and peaceful. We took our time walking around and taking pictures. There's a statue of Garibaldi in the middle of the square, as well as a park lined with statues along the walkway. They also have a water closet at the bottom of the steps. I can see how it would be a great place for a morning or evening walk. The view from this hill is probably even more beautiful as the sun is setting. It must be nice to live nearby and take this in on a daily basis. A very lovely place to be.

Great hilltop views of the city on Janiculum Terrace, with some interesting monuments like this one on top. It is a steep climb from Trastevere, so I recommend taking the 115 bus to the top (the bus goes by the beautiful fountain Fontana dell'Acqua Paola along the way) then you can walk along the top and take the 115 bus back across the Tiber River to the main part of Rome.

I took a walk from the vatican state to Trastevere and stopped by here. It was a nice view over rome but 2 hours before I was at the top of the Dome and already explored whole room from high grounds. Also there is a lot of different options to see nice views. Palatine hill, Venezia palazzo etc.

The statue itself isn't something special. You have similar horse statue over Venezia etc

If you don't want to walk up from Trastevere with swtichbacks and/or stairs, you can take the 870 bus from in front of the Hospital Santo Spirito, or maybe even walk down from the Monteverdi Quarter. Not quite a 360-degree panorama, but close. If you don't know Rome, go with someone who can point things out. If you've seen several sites, you'll recognize them. (No placards.) It's lovely before sunset. After dark, also a sight--once I heard a nightingale.

Above Trastevere, at the top of Gianicolo (Janiculum), (not one of Rome's seven hills but damn nice anyway) the Piazzale Garibaldi looks east over Rome and commemorates the city's heroes in the 19th century Risorgimento (unification of Italy). Nearby, along the bust-lined Passagiata to the Via Garibaldi is the Fonte Acqua Paola, a huge, beautiful 17th c. fountain, and below that a monument to the fallen of the short-lived Roman Republic of 1849. We walked up and had hoped to visit the Botanical Garden so we went into the park below the Piazzale, but unfortunately it is accessible only from the lower entrance in November, resulting in a bit of a deathmarch through a badly maintained park, so if on foot keep to the paved Passagiata along the edge of the park. However you get there, the views from the Piazzale are memorable.

You get to see a truely titanic view of Rome's ancient skyline from this hilltop position so it's well worth the walk up the hill (which takes about 20 minutes on foot all up hill). As well as the views, there's some statues including an impressively large equestrian statue and a number of smaller marble busts of historically important Italians. This location does seem to be a particular magnate for young millennials, so it's unlikely that you'll get it to yourself.

If you have a little time up your sleeve at the end of the afternoon, this is a must see. Perched on the hill above the Trastevere the Piazzale Garibaldi affords you the most glorious view of Rome. Some say it's the very best view of Rome.
It's quite magical to watch the sunset from up here.
Unfortunately there are untended trees that block some of the views, but there are plenty of places to look from and you will. It be disappointed!
