This Street Food Tour of Rome was an optional extra as part of my recent guided group tour to Italy (via Riviera Tours). I don't know if it was bespoked for my group or whether it was simply renamed for the itinerary document (I see here on Trip Advisor that there is a twilight Travestere food tour). Whatever the situation, it doesn't matter.

We all had to meet up with our guide, Rasheed, at 6pm at Piazza Trilussa just near the river. He was such a friendly and cheerful chap. He started out by giving us a brief history of the piazza (it holds a special place in Rome's history) then explained the tour. Trastevere is one of Rome's most popular neighbourhoods for eating and drinking in the evening so it's a good place to hold a tour all about street food.

I won't go into detail about the eateries that we visited nor the food and drink we tasted as I don't want to spoil it for anyone. What I will say is that we visited different types of places each giving us a taste of a different course of a meal (i.e. starter to dessert). Every venue was interesting and the food was really enjoyable. You don't need to eat before going on this tour as we all came away feeling as if we'd had a decent sized meal.

One extra that was thrown into our particular tour was a brief visit to the church 'Santa Maria' in Trastevere which is the equivalent of a simple parish church but which I believe is known to have one of the most spectacular interiors of any church in Rome. It was quite amazing to see; the church looks ordinary enough from the outside but the ceilings, paintings and general design were stunning.

Once the tour was over Rasheed guided us back to the piazza and made sure we had no problems in getting taxis back to our hotel. From start to finish the tour lasted about 2 hours.

I would heartily recommend this tour especially if Rasheed is leading it. He is a local and is very enthusiastic about his part of Rome. The tour gives you a feel for the 'real' Rome as it's where Romans themselves come to eat and drink.

An awesome trip through some of the food & history highlights in Testaccio, guided by Domenico who did a brilliant job at making us feel at home.
We've been to Rome several times throughout the years but hadn't been to Testaccio yet. We've done some guided tours before with other companies and many felt lackluster, but that was definitely not the case here. Domenico did a kickass job at showing us around and keeping everyone engaged. I think we had about 7 stops on our tour, with tastings (or just a straight up full meal) at each location. We didn't feel rushed or pressured into buying a buncha stuff like with some other tours. Just a great experience, and we'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in trying some great food in an area of Rome that's not so tourist-heavy.

I went on an eating tour of Rome with my family and a few other passengers from the Princess Cruise we are currently on and it was the BEST. Our tour guide Rish absolutely made the experience! He has such a passion for what he does and is incredibly personable, knowledgeable, and charismatic. We were already impressed with him, the structure of the tour, and the overall experience in the moment, but even more so as we continued to do other excursions in the days following - having a seamless and well thought out itinerary with a guide that is doing it simply because he loves to really makes all the difference. I can't recommend this enough - THANK YOU Rish and thank you Eating Europe!!!

Our guide Claudio started out by telling us how sick he was and then proceeded to touch our drinking glasses and food. I asked him to be more careful and he appeared offended. There is no way that the tour operator and Claudio didn't know that he was contagious but we were a group of 4 which made for a full tour so I am sure that their need to conduct the tour outweighed concerns for the rest of our trip. I give this tour 3 stars because it was a great tour idea and the food stops were worth it but we 4 got sick whilst on our vacation and it was a direct result of the choices made by the operator. Most expensive cold that we have caught in a long while!! Anyone can get sick, I get it but when you book a tour on line you have to rely on the operator to make appropriate
choices and in this case, the tour guide should have been replaced.

We are so sorry to hear of your unfortunate luck of getting sick while you were on vacation. Here at Eating Europe in Rome we do not have a guide named Claudio, so we are not clear if it is one of our tours that you attended. We do have a very strict sick policy for our guides as we do understand that our guests are on vacation and we would never want them to fall ill. After reading your review we will take the time to reinforce the importance of being healthy while on tour within our own guides. We do hope that you were able to enjoy the rest of your vacation in Rome.

I loved the time spent with this awesome tour company. I did the twilight tract every food tour, I have been in Rome many many times , and I loved the places they took us, the narration, and inside stories kept us engage. The places we stop are truly gems that the locals crave for. I taste the best secret recipe of fried artichoke, I am dying to go back. Our guide was excellent, the places he took us had the best on each category, hard to pick a favorite. I recommend to check on all the options they offer.

Experiencing the authenticity of Trastevere. We did the twilight tour from 5.15pm-9.15pm. We loved that some of the places we went to we sat at tables. We didn’t feel rushed. Eric was a great guide. He was very knowledgeable and we learnt a lot from him. One of my favourite places was a restaurant we went Spirito di Vino where we went down into a cellar which is older than the colosseum. The statue that was found there while digging it out sits in the Vatican and we saw it on our visit there so it was so cool. Eric was very helpful on providing recommendations for places around the area too. The group only had 12 of us which was a perfect size. Would highly recommend

This was our third food tour in Italy, and must have saved the best for last! Toni was an awesome host. Personal, local and historical stories, all blended in with the best food in the area. She made an effort to connect with everyone and looking forward to going back to Trastevere and eating our favourites, pizza and porcetta.

Our guide was so lovely and actually cared about us, but the food itself wasn’t as good as another three hour tour I did that was a quarter of the price. The wine was particularly disappointing. Some of the food vendors seemed very annoyed with us and were unfriendly in a way that even our wonderful guide couldn’t make up for. I had heard this was a special tour, but in the end, it wasn’t worth the price. There are other, more low-key and personal tours that gave us way more of what is special about Trastevere. By the reviews this tour promised to be the best one, but it didn’t deliver.

Thank you for joining us on the Twilight Trastevere Food Tour and for taking the time to give this feedback. We’re very sorry that our tour didn’t meet your expectations in terms of access to the restaurants you visited, therefore, to feel like the owners were not expecting your group to arrive or weren't happy to have your custom. I can assure you that all of the locations have been carefully selected in order to give an authentic taste of the city’s food culture and the neighborhood’s rich character. We run several departures each evening, and Trastevere is a very crowded area; our vendors have been loyal to us for years, but may have trouble accommodating our groups on some of the busier evenings. We take all feedback very seriously, we’re investigating the tour you took to see what may have gone wrong on that day, and to ensure we’re meeting our own high standards in the future. We sincerely hope you enjoyed the rest of your holiday in the Eternal City and that we may be able to host you on another food tour in the future.

We loved this! Our guide, Walter, was charming and knowledgeable. Great way to experience a fun neighborhood and learn a bit about pasta making too. Consider this tour at the beginning of your Rome trip so that you get good food and restaurant recommendations for the remainder of your visit. 😍

We were led by Katherine today through a series of small tasting experiences at local shops, several of which were in the Testaccio market. We then had lunch at Ristorante Angelina a Testaccio. Finished with Gelato at Giolitti. The guide was excellent and brought significant knowledge of local food and food history. She was very pleasant and enthusiastic. Plenty to eat and drink. Very satisfied.
