About
Official underground cemetery of the Church of Rome in the 3rd century AD. Around half a million Christians were buried here, among them many martyrs and 16 popes. They are named after the deacon St. Callixtus who, at the beginning of the 3rd century AD, was assigned by Pope Zephyrinus to the administration of the cemetery. Since 1930 they have been entrusted to the custody of the Salesians of Don Bosco.

    Interesting but eerie place
The catacombs were eerily amazing. To think of all the people that were entombed there was incredible. There were all sizes of tombs, for the most part empty now. The final room was a small chapel where we were asked to remember our loved ones who have gone before us.

    Beautiful whistle stop tour.
This really is a whistle stop tour - not much hanging about, it takes about 40mins total. The catacombs are fascinating and eerily beautiful. I would’ve appreciated more time to linger and absorb the atmosphere. Our guide Sam was fun, informative and entertaining. Worth mentioning: No bones! The bodies were all removed hundreds of years ago. No photos allowed, and wear a jumper. It’s chilly underground!

Catacombs of St Callixtus Guided Tour
The catacombs are a fascinating place to visit. Yes...a lot of the bodies have been removed but why would anyone want to go to see dead people? However if that is your thing we were shown two original stone coffins and their remains; one was a Christian burial and one Pagan. To be honest after all that time there isn't a lot left anyway. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and was more than happy to answer questions. He was also very informative about the parts of the catacombs we visited. Also thanks to their Customer Service skills we were still allowed to join our tour despite being 5 to 10 minutes late - bit of a mix up with the address and our taxi driver - ensure you book to the catacombs themselves and not the address only.

    Great trip.
We took public transportation to the catacombs which was very straight forward. We arrived just in time to buy tickets and join the English speaking tour. The guide was very knowledgeable and quite funny on occasions. Most of the facts about the catacombs can be viewed online but the guide was great at explaining and taking questions. The tour lasted about 40 minutes and was very worthwhile. The catacombs are set in beautiful surroundings, we walked through to the next catacombs and on to the Appia way and spent a few hours walking. We would recommend this as the scenery and surroundings are beautiful.

    Happy we did it
This was something my teen wanted to do and asked a few times. It is a bit out of town and we had to take a cab there and back. A very affordable activity. The tour didn't take that long. About a half hour. We didn't buy advanced tickets and took the English tour and it wasn't hard to get tickets. Maybe 10 minutes. Nice gift shop. It's in a very nice park area and other catacombs and very close by. I didn't realize it was the original resting place of several Popes. I also didn't realize people still actively say masses in the catacombs. There was a nice food truck outside. I didn't try anything from the food truck but certainly would have. I think it's possible that one can walk from the catacombs to the aqueduct park, but I'm not certain. The cab had a tough time finding us to pick us up and take us back. If you are fluent in multiple languages I would say not to take the English tour, because it will have the most people. We didn't have to wait long as they seem to run several times an hour. Tours were in English, Italian, French, Spanish, German, and I might be forgetting one. I believe you have to take a guided tour because otherwise you are likely to get lost down there. There are virtually no bones or anything like that. There is some art but not a lot. You cannot bring your dog to the area. I think the catacombs are privately owned, but on public land. Our guide was (presumably) Indian. We had no trouble understanding him and he was a bit funny and quite knowledgable. Getting there the road is pretty narrow. I would not want to walk or bike it myself. Especially not with a family.

    Good experience
4/5. We had polish guide, very small group of 4 people, we got ticket straight after coming to place. We were waiting 40 minutes before sightseeing. Guide was well prepared and friendly. Unfortunately no bones, but overall we were satisfied because of information we got and atmosphere.

    Really interesting few hours
Really interesting tour around these catacombs, tour guide was really informative and the 40 minute tour well worth the entrance fee. My 7 year old son really enjoyed it and said he learnt a lot. Bit of a pain to get to but worth the effort.

    Different and Interesting
The introductory video at the Tourist Centre was excellent. It gave a comprehensive overview of Rome's ancient development through to current day depictions of sites. Our driver Alessandro was well prepared with interesting notes in various languages, but most of all it was his enthusiasm for Rome that impressed. His stories of points of interest en route to the catecomb were highly informative. The exploration of the catecomb was great with details that gave interest adding perspectives otherwise unknown. Overall a very worthwhile tour!

Catacombs of Saint Callixtus: You Will Enjoy It with a Little Planning
The Catacombs of Saint Callixtus are cool, literally and figuratively but the tour experience could have been better You need to purchase a timed-entry ticket to see the catacombs. This is a guided experience so don’t expect to wander on your own or even linger. My tour guide was informative but not what I would call an expert on the catacombs or giving tours/moving groups. There were some questions that he either didn’t have the answer or seemed to struggle to answer. We passed by some areas that had very interesting drawings and symbols, it would have been nice to have time to look at them and receive information. Because the halls are so narrow and the groups can be large if you linger you will miss what the tour guide is describing up ahead. My tour guide also did not engage the visitors. Smaller groups, training the guides on tour techniques and visitor engagement could have made the experience so much better. Right now there is only a small area of the overall catacombs that are open to the public. What you do see is interesting. But do a bit of research on the catacombs especially the symbols (even if it is only the official website) before going this will enhance your understanding and appreciation …..don’t rely only on the guide. One last thing, there are no bones in the catacombs so if you are expecting to see bones you will be very disappointed. If you are looking for bones visit the Crypt of the Capuchin Friars. Some practical things…. The catacombs are outside of Rome. You will need to take public transportation, taxi/Uber, or join a tour company. The nice thing is you get to travel on the Appian Way. As mentioned you do need a timed-entry ticket. Buy it online. They are closed on Wednesdays and for some time around lunch so be sure to plan accordingly. Check their website. The passageways are tight. If you are claustrophobic the catacombs may be a problem. There are stairs and some are steep. Wear shoes that are stable. It is cool down there. It is nice during the hot temperatures but a light sweater or shawl might be nice to have on hand. There is no cafe only a food truck (I didn’t try it so I don’t know how good it is). Photos are not allowed within the catacombs. Their rule please respect it.

Visiting catacombs near Rome is of course a unique historical and educational opportunity. For that reason only, I did not give this a one star review. However, our catacombs guide (supplied by the facility and thus the vatican) seems to think the main point of his job is to deliver a sermon. He evangelized on and on and on prior to our group ever getting to actually enter the catacombs. He then rudely and repeatedly complained that visitors were moving too slowly thus causing the tour to run long. The real reason that the tour ran long was because of this rude guide’s unwanted sermon. The visit was terribly disappointing.

I was reading some reviews and agree that they are not the most impressive ones like those in Naples, Paris etc. but has its Christian importance because 9 popes were buried there plus bishops and martyrs of the early Christian days. In that period, Christians were "illegal" and they couldn't be buried openly like the rest of the Romans so they turned to build underground cemeteries. Some of those burials, along with another catacombs, were decorated making them the world's earliest Christian artwork.

The guided visit was divided by languages, apparently held by apprentice priests (and other collaborators) and lasted around 30-40 minutes. Had read that there is a public bus that arrives close to this site departing from Circus Maximus area but don't know exactly which line since we were biking the Appian Way from the south.

As wrote at the beginning, not the most impressive but still interesting and reason why is called the "Little Vatican".

Boy, is this place off the beaten path. Miles outside of the Rome City walls. Had reserved a 2 pm English language tour. You buy the tickets when you get there. The guide, though genial, was of Indian descent and I was only able to pick up every third word during his introductory talk. Every sentence need not end with "ok". Unlike the amazing Parisian Catacombs, there are zero bones there, just empty spaces. Disappointing.

The tour of the catacombs was very disappointing. The English speaking tour group was far too large (more than 30) and could not fit into the places the guide stopped to give her talk. Sometimes we were at the front (fab) but mostly left trailing at the back due to lack of space. Consequently we missed out on most of what she had to say. She frequently said”we must move on quickly, we have only a short time underground “. Felt very rushed and disappointed with the experience. The setting is beautiful and the experience could be so much better as the place is fascinating. Sad to leave such a poor review but hope the organisation will take note.

We had a very engaging guide who clearly loves his job and that translates to an enjoyable experience. A bit disappointed that no photos are allowed and not explained why? Can understand the Sistine Chapel etc. but not here? You travel thru dark & damp tunnels passing thousands of niches that once housed 500,000 Christians including 16 late Pontiffs. The catacombs were called the crypt of the popes and was established in the 3rd Century AD. A good insight and reasonably priced and easy to get to on the Appian Way.

Very good experience. Excellent info on the history of the catacombs from Rome’s perspective as well as the larger religious one. Our tour went long and still would have liked longer and a smaller group to spend more time and ask more questions. Appreciate that it is open to public. Not so small as to make most people claustrophobic and wonderfully cool on hot summer day.
