Neighborhood: Trevi
A non-stop photo and souvenir opportunity, Trevi is all about action. From early morning through the wee hours, the piazza surrounding Trevi Fountain hosts a never-ending flow of tourists hoping to make a wish or take a selfie. Clever restaurants, charming gelaterias, uncanny bars, kitsch shops, and a range of hotels make up the local landscape. Beneath the bustle are the remains of an ancient neighborhood that you can visit by heading over to a repertoire cinema and asking for a peek underground. There is something for everyone, but if peace and quiet are what you seek, plan to visit in the early morning hours.

I think I maybe entered this with the wrong expectations. The group was huge. We were followed at all times by 2 docents behind the group. While I understand this is for security, I always hate it as I feel pressured and watched.
The rooms are very pretty but all the guide's info (as far as I could understand with my very basic Italian) tended to be about the history of the paintings/ sculptures. I guess I thought since it's the Presidential Palace we might hear more like, "This room is used for xyz government event." And the tour was crazy long, well over an hour - I don't have this attention span even in my own language.
If you speak fluent Italian or if you are truly fascinated by artwork, you would probably enjoy it more. Maybe they could at least offer an audio guide in other languages, even if it does not exactly match what the guide is saying.

One of the most underrated places in Rome is Palazzo Quirinale, the former palace of the popes, the former Royal Palace, and the current Presidendial Palace. Since it is a working palace, tours have to be reserved in advance, but for just 1.50 EUR. Tours are in Italian, but the last time I visited some explanations were given in English too. I don't know if this was just curtesy, or if this is nowadays a general rule. In any case maybe read up a bit or follow the documentation online. At the end of the tour through the state apartments (a bit less than an hour) a second part leads to rooms outlining a bit of current Italian history with the original copy of the Italian constitution on display. This part was given in Italian only, so a bit too long for my taste, but that's just 10 minutes and you can go on the terrace and view more of Rome instead. You definitely see more rooms than at Buckingham Palace, or in Madrid, or even Versailles. Overall the rooms are very nice, though nothing as mind blowing as the Gallery of Mirrors in Versailles, but a bit more of variety.
I didn't yet do the second tour, where you can also visit the gardens.

We would have never guessed after signing up for the (very few) slots available for external visitors that the Quirinale Palace would be so large and with richly-adorned rooms reflecting each century in its history. We have been to the major royal palaces in Europe but the Quirinale is special as it is still in full use as the seat of the Italian presidency so all rooms must be kept ready for daily use, which makes it less a museum visit and more of a peek into a grandiose home still in use. Very important: this is a national treasure for Italians and the home of their president, so the tour is free and open to all who can sign up before slots run out, but also all tour commentary is in Italian, made by volunteers who love this building and its history. If you do not speak Italian you will miss out on the highly-entertaning and even dramatic history of the Quirinale from the papacy to Napoleon then the Italian royal family and now the Italian republic, but the visually stunning palace will need no translation. Security is tight so do not stray away from your group.

It is the largest building in the world, 70,000 m2, 20 times larger than the White House and is the residence of the President of the Italian Republic., a historic building in Rome which is located in the square of the same name on the hill and overlooks the square of the same name. Inside the square we also find the Quirinale Obelisk and, in front of the Quirinale Palace, there is the Fontana dei Dioscuri, which depicts the Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux, on horseback. I was sad not to be able to visit it inside because we arrived late. The entrance ticket costs 10 euros and booking is mandatory. The Quirinale remains open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9.30am to 4pm. On June 2nd, if I'm not mistaken, the palace can be visited for free. Near the square there are also the Quirinale Gardens, a green area open to the public on some special occasions. They offer a panoramic view of the city of Rome. The view of Rome from the hill is fantastic. It is always possible to know if the President is at the Palace: just look up and look for the presidential standard, to the left of the Tricolore, at the top of the Quirinale.

I have pre-booked the tour of Palazzo Quirinale online and came to the gates early, so I had plenty of time to enjoy the views and the exterior of the Palazzo. Also, took a short walk in the Giardini di Quirinale.
The tour was pretty busy: big group, mostly Italians, but our small group of English speakers was lucky to get the tour in English. The tour was very long: 3 hours, no breaks (some tips: toilets are available only at the end of the tour, bottled water is allowed).
The tour was pretty interesting, the palace and its history is quite impressive, but for me its overly lavish decor was a bit too much... maybe because I am a huge fan of Baroque palazzos, where opulence is always in perfect balance with elegance.
On the first floor, I really enjoyed seeing magnificent porcelain and silver collections
The best part of the tour was the opportunity to see beautiful Palazzo gardens and imperial carriages. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes - the stairs from the gardens to the stables are very slippery.

Beautiful and amazing palace. We booked with months in advance directly in to the Institutional webpage for only 1.50 euro each. The tour is in small groups and you can see the on first hand the history of the Presidency of Italy.

It was a long time that I wanted to visit the Palazzo del Quirinale and to do so I relied on a travel agency in Pietrasanta.
The palace is gorgeous, amazing, full of history, well maintained BUT
- the time of an hour and a half per group is too short to have time to look at the details, to taste the furnishings etc...
- the guide a lady of good will has a voice too low for yuyyo the group can hear the interesting explanations she provides
- to meet the time (I assume) she speaks quickly and begins her explanations without waiting until all the members of the group have arrived near her.
- Finally it is a real shame that you can not make a combined visit Palace - Gardens....... Moreover, the Gardens are open only in the morning and therefore for daily groups it is practically impossible to visit them ........
So I left with a little bitter taste in my mouth not for the palace but for how the visits are organized

It was the second time I visited Il Quirinale and it was even more interesting. The visit, thanks to the fundamental contribution of TCI volunteers, is even better organized. Very good guy who accompanied us providing both exhaustive historical information about the succession of events related to Popes, Kings and Presidents who lived at the Quirinale, both funny anecdotes happened in this palace. It is an experience that conveys the strength and solemnity of the institution, that is, the Presidency of the Republic. To be there just book a little in advance and the price is really low for what you see and learn.

The rooms of the palace, richly decorated and steeped in history, convey a sense of majesty and importance. Each room tells a part of Italian history, from the papal eras to the modern Republic. The sumptuous interiors and works of art adorning the walls are testimony to the country's rich artistic heritage.
The Quirinale gardens offer an oasis of tranquility in the heart of the city. Walking among the centuries-old trees and ornamental fountains is an ideal way to relax and admire the beauty of the palace and its surroundings.

Spectacular. THANK YOU PRESIDENT for giving us the opportunity to visit an unparalleled historical-political residence. Thanks to the touring club but above all thanks to ESTER, an intern university student who, with her competence and evidently innate professionalism, gave us an hour and a half of her time to make us even more proud of being born in Italy
