The area
Neighborhood: Trevi
A non-stop photo and souvenir opportunity, Trevi is all about action. From early morning through the wee hours, the piazza surrounding Trevi Fountain hosts a never-ending flow of tourists hoping to make a wish or take a selfie. Clever restaurants, charming gelaterias, uncanny bars, kitsch shops, and a range of hotels make up the local landscape. Beneath the bustle are the remains of an ancient neighborhood that you can visit by heading over to a repertoire cinema and asking for a peek underground. There is something for everyone, but if peace and quiet are what you seek, plan to visit in the early morning hours.
How to get there

Although it was fenced in so that you could not get down the stairs to the basin it is a magnificent piece of art that encapsulates everything romantic about Rome. Well-preserved, good vibes, nice city planning. What you'd want to do next is get inside that building and look at the crowd gathering around it.

One of Rome’s most popular tourist areas, Piazza di Trevi’s centrepiece is of course the Fountain. However, the plaza is also made up of many different bars and restaurants, shops and offers a completely different area of Rome to visit and explore. Yes, the Fountain area can become very crowded – especially at nighttime – but it’s worth exploring nevertheless.

One of the most beautiful fountains and Squares in Rome. A very popular place to take photos and often crowded but clean with a pleasurable atmosphere. Beautiful in the evening with the fountain and water lit up. .

You'll barely notice the piazza itself because 1) your eyes are inevitably drawn to the marvellous fountain, and 2) because of the number of people occupying it.

The fountain is magnificent, but the piazza is nothing special.

Why TA have separate listings for the square and the fountain? Beats me.

If you wish to see the Trevi fountain then you need to visit this location at Piazza di Trevi. The location is very popular, lots of stores, restaurants, icecream shops. This area is filled with lots of tourist esp. those on the younger side, many just chilling out.my time was spent here having an icecream at the fountain and just enjoying the ambience.
A definite must-visit.

Very busy and crowded square at any time of day. But the centerpiece is the amazingly beautiful fountain. Lots of tacky tourists shops and eateries nearby. It's good that there are lots of seats on the exterior of the fountain that you can sit and people watch.

We visit the fontaine at our first day in Rome, and kept visiting it a lot of times because our hotel is so close to the area...
It is amazing place and at night looks more beautiful..
We made a wish for our new life and after that someone took our picture and we buy it he told us it will take 5 min to be seen, the moment I saw the pic I was surprised to see a light and seen it as a cross in the end of it beside me (left of the picture).. This ment to me a lot.

Piazza di Trevi is world famous and with a good reason. It's an exceptional spot with an exceptional fountain. The fountain took its name from the fact that three roads meet at this point. The Italian word for roads is vie and tre for three. This was also the point where an aqueduct ended, which explains the water. The sculpture is stunning and symbolises the water and roads story. Well wishers like to throw coins in the fountain which is donated to charity, I think. The piazza is very small considering the numbers of visitors, and is always extremely crowded. There are numerous cafes, restaurants, bars and tourist shops in the area. There are some gourmet food places too, where you can buy some great Italian cheeses and cold meats. This a is a piazza you can't afford to miss!

Before you go to Rome and Trevi Square, read ,read and read some more. You will find out that the Trevi Fountain is surrounded by scaffolding.

Some say what a disappointment it was to get to the site and not see the magnificent fountain.Instead of being disappointed, why not get a drink and ponder on the actual story behind this amazingly beautiful structure.

To those of you who think the site so non descript, this fountain has been here for many years . Life has taken shape around it.

The Trevi Fountain was built at the end of an Aqueduct that was constructed in 19BC. It is one of the largest and most breathtakingly beautiful fountains in the world. There it stands in a smallish square and thousands of people have pushed themselves through crowds to look at it.

The Trevi Fountain was designed by a Roman - N. Salvi in 1732. Sadly, he died before work was completed in 1762. Built mostly from travertine stone, carried from Tivoli, this Baroque fountain stands 26·3 metres wide and 49·15 metres wide.

The fountain is now under a 2·2 million euros restoration project. It should be back to full glory by the autumn of 2015.

Please do not write about your disappointment at seeing it covered in canvas, or that it is in a small square. Go and marvel at its story. You cannot throw a coin in the fountain but can leave coins and wish for a return trip. Did you know coins are collected by a charity that uses it to feed the poor of the city.

Small and insignificant this fountain is not. It's near the Spanish Steps and Piazza Navona and it costs nothing to visit.

Go and celebrate its glory.
