Neighborhood: Esquilino
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighborhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighborhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic center. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.

- Hotelneedtoknow20 contributionsEasy quick transferArrived at the airport for a trip to Rome, bought our tickets in advance and hopped on the train. Easy to find and ran like clockwork, comfortable and convenient. Much cheaper than a taxi transfer.Visited December 2022Written January 2, 2023
- SimpleneedLondon, United Kingdom193 contributionsPays yer money and you get transported. It kinda works but expensive!Clean, good service from airport to Rome..buying tickets from machines very very slow (5 mins plus) so bear in mind if in rush. Not sure about 1st class apart from inflated price. Normal stopping train would have cost 8€ as opposed to 14€!!! But would take 55 mins opposed to 30. You pays the money and ir gets you too and from the stationVisited February 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 11, 2023
- r tBromsgrove, United Kingdom669 contributionsExpensive but handy14e per person per single I thought was very expensive however its convenient, quick and fairly easy to use. Ticket machines take card and cash. Be aware of pick pockets in termini station, the airport end wasn't as bad. Smooth and comfortable, takes 32 minutes is direct and doesn't stop in between. Keep your ticket as they are checked on the journey even though both stations are barrired.Visited February 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 23, 2023
- CheapyPantsSurrey, Canada6 contributionsRecommended for getting to Roma Termini. Buy tickets online before you go.Bought our tickets online. Their website is a little flakey in that you have to enter the italian names of locations. i.e typing Termini will not bring up Roma Termini Once we bought the tickets we saved them as PDF on the phone. We walked around the Termini the day before to get familiar with it. When we travelled to the airport it was flawless. Scanned the phone to enter the gate, we boarded the train earlier than the one we paid for but that was not an issue. I asked the agent on the platform if that was ok. She was very pleasant and helpful. Boarded train, got scanned onboard at 1/2 way point, got to airport and followed the crowd. Nice trip. Nicer than the Aiport Taxi that we took inbound to our hotel.Visited April 2023Written April 5, 2023
- Ben FBloomington, Indiana1,470 contributionsAffordable and Pleasantly Easy to UseFor €14, this direct service from FCO Airport to Rome’s Termini station cannot be beat. It’s safe, even at night. It’s wheelchair-accessible, which most of Rome’s subway network is not. It’s fast, when taxis, cars, and buses get stuck in traffic. It’s frequent, having departure times out of FCO every fifteen minutes, if I recall. I also recall it being relatively clean and spacious. It’s a must-use for any Rome visitor!Visited March 2023Traveled soloWritten April 9, 2023
- Peter SZaandam, The Netherlands7 contributionsEasy and quick transport between Roma Termini and Fiumicino AirportA working direct connection with Roma Termini station that takes you from the airport Fiumicino straight to the city, in just over 30 minutes. The train leaves every 15 minutes both ways, making sure you don't have to wait for a long time should you miss it. We bought our tickets online and used a digital pass to enter the station and use the train, no hassle and easy boarding. At the airport the train is easy to find, just follow the signs. At Termini station it's also easy to find since it uses dedicated platforms. The trains are comfy, have plenty of space onboard to stow your luggage and look clean. - Traveller123CTCape Town Central, South Africa213 contributionsExcellent, safe train service to and from the airportExcellent train service to get from from Rome Fiumicino airport to Rome Termini, or from Termini to the airport. Safe and clean. Ran on time when we used it. But the actual train can be difficult to find! You wait on the platform watching the screen for departures, waiting for the platform number to be shown. In our experience, the platform number was shown 2-3 mins before the departure time, and then, when we got to that platform, another train pulled up behind the train that was already there, making it very confusing as to which train was going to the airport. Not many officials around to ask for advice, but we used logic and walked to the end of the platform and boarded the new train that arrived, because it was obvious it had to be the first train to be able to pull out of the station on that platform. We always bought our tickets in advance from the Trenitalia machines at the train station. But apparently you can buy your tickets on board from the train conductor (but check first!). You can also apparently buy your tickets online from the Trenitalia app.Visited July 2023Written July 15, 2023

- Rosemary B3 contributionsFast and efficient shuttle to the airport! We found this service to be very fast and efficient. We purchased our tickets online but didn’t realize that we had to check our email for a link to the QR code. Very rookie mistake but the staff person validated our tickets from the reference number. I have to say that the terrible reviews made me uneasy while we waited at the train station but my anxiety was pretty unfounded. Purchase your tickets in advance (we used Omio) and watch the board for platform - usually 23 or 24.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 28, 2023

After lot of thinking and research we decided to take the leonardo express from fiumicino airport to Rome Termini.
On the 13th of January we arrived in Fiumicino . We paid 14 euros per person for a 30 minute ride.
We boarded the train and waited to leave.
5 minuted delay it was okay, 10 minutes , 20 minutes delay and people started questioning.
After lots of waiting i kindly asked a station employee what was going on and they told me that the train wouldnt leave and with the same ticket we could take the simpler line (that costs 8 euros per person ) but didn't go the termini station that we wanted and the ride was 45 minutes approximately to Tuscolana station, which was our alternative. There were no elevator or escalators so it was pretty hard to carry our heavy suitcases.
Also in Tuscolana station it was mentioned the connection with the metro. But it is FIVE minutes away on foot.
Do not mention the refund, there is no such thing!
Really bad impression for our first time in Rome.

I purchased a ticket at the Roma Termini station, however, the train was taking very long to arrive. I then asked a Leonardo assistant about the delay and she said that as we were in the summer time, the trains have intervals of 1 hour between each other. As I couldn't wait that long, she suggested that I took a taxi and applied for a refund online. I did what she suggested, but to my surprise when I applied for the refund I was told that I "couldn't get a reimbursement, as it was stated at the place I bought the ticket about the new train schedule". It was NOT stated anywhere and Leonardo did NOT refund me, meaning I've been simply robbed. Shameful, I'd definitely recommend another service such as the bus or the taxi (the latter especially if you have more people along), but would avoid Leonardo, under the risk of being explicitly ripped off.

The train company, is scamming you two ways.
1. Validation. Even though the ticket is time stamped and only valid for one specific journey, you will be fined €50 if you don't validate your ticket on a separate machine before entering the train.
2. Age restriction for kids. When buying tickets from the machine, you can choose either 'Adult' or 'Kid', but with no on screen explanation of the age limit of 'Kid'. If your child, holding a 'Kid' ticket, is older than 12, you will be fined €64.
The train operator, Trenitalia, is taking advantage of tourists, not familiar with the strict rules. The fines are hefty, ruining the budget of many a family. It's a shame that they are allowed to operate this way, making a bad impression of such a beautiful city as Rome.

I'm in Rome once per month and usually use Leonardo. And almost every time googling the hours is difficult or even gives various schedules, sometimes outdated.
Second complaint: I forgot to validate the ticket once and the controller gave me the fine with visible pleasure. I understand law is a law, but this is one of the situations when one gets punished (50 euros!) just for forgetting to do one gesture. In addition there is no really way to cheat on Leonardo, as there are controls at entrance, exit and during the trip, so the staff could be a little more forgiving. Next time I was in Rome the machines to validate the tickets at Fiumicino were not working anyway, ehhhh, Italy.
Third complaint: when you buy ticket at Fiumicino, try to get it in the machine or at trainitalia desk. There selling point which is the closest to the platforms is kind of scam. Sometimes they just refuse to sell you the ticket (even if it is written on the wall), sometimes they want you to buy ticket for their shuttle, which costs basically the same as leonardo but you will never know when it departures, so you end up closed in a small van with a few other passengers waiting for the driver, while the train departed long time ago... ehhh, Italy:-)

I see there are quite a few people that have had the same unpleasant experience as us and so I'm now suspecting that this is a bit of a scam. We were told that kids under 15 can go free with an adult, and a representative from the company even used the machine to purchase the tickets for us! We were then informed by the inspector on the train that our child's ticket was not valid and we were charged €64 (€50 fine and €14 ticket). The inspector was quite aggressive and would not listen to our explanation. When we complained at the customer desk (and had to wait for 45 mins) we were told that we had the incorrect tickets and they couldn't refund the fine. The ridiculous thing is that we had a 'Kid' ticket, rather than a 'Junior' ticket. Both are supposed to be free and so we had paid the correct amount regardless. What an absolute joke.

Very disappointed, we book a ticket for a 2nd class 8€ But we got by mistake the first class train that costs 14€.Then the lady that was checking the tickets she asked as to pay the 6€ That was fair and we agreed but she also asked us for an extra fee 8€ each person. At least now we know that with 44€ we will get a cab next time from the airport straight to the hotel.
What kind of policy is this?

A working direct connection with Roma Termini station that takes you from the airport Fiumicino straight to the city, in just over 30 minutes.
Although it's more expensive than a shuttle bus, it takes less time and you can sit back to relax while starting or ending your travel to/from Rome.
My advice would be to buy your return ticket ahead since the trainstation can be crowded and it might take a while to buy tickets there.

After buying the ticket we faced a piece of paper taped to the train informing us that it is cancelled. This piece of information was nowhere to be found earlier, across the Termini station or during the ticket purchase procedure.
There is a bus substitute that was provided for the service, no one from the train/bus staff could speak English so we had to sort out the bus location ourselves.
The difference in price was also not refunded, other bus options are somewhere around €8, train ticket costed us €14 per ticket and we ended up in the bus anyways.

Our trip to Rome was ruined on our return to the airport via this train. I had bought return tickets on the outbound day of our trip as it seemed a sensible thing to do. The woman at the kiosk did not ask which day I wanted to travel back so I (wrongly) assumed that I could use it at any time. Fast forward 48 hrs and when our tickets were checked on the train, the guard wanted to charge us €200 per person for having the wrong date tickets. I cried and he ‘let us off’ with €50 per person plus €14 per person for each new ticket, so €128 more than we should have paid. We went to the ticket office at the airport where we had bought them and it was a different lady who just shrugged and said there was nothing she could do as she was not working when we had bought the tickets. Just so appalling.

Got the train from Rome Termini to airport, bought a ticket for the four adults and one child that were travelling….on the machine it mentions under 14 are free, which our child was. When the ticket was checked on the train, we were told (very rudely) by the train manager, that it was free from under 12s, not under 14, and that we would now need to pay €64. This was a genuine mistake, as the under 14 that had been mentioned was not for the airport journey, and I was made to feel like a criminal, when I would never have tried to not pay for the ticket. It seems that we are not the only ones to get caught by this - please be very careful! Train journey was fine other than that, but the train managers total lack of customer service is the reason for the review. In fact he made me cry as I was so embarrassed in front of a train full of customers for a genuine mistake. Would never travel that way again!

Good afternoon, I would like to know if the tickets for the Leonardo Express train between Termini and Fiumicino Airport are valid for the whole day they are taken or if only for the indicated time? This is because I bought it for a specific time but it does not appear on the ticket. Thanks.

Hi! We were just in Rome in May! You buy the ticket for a specified time but you can use it during any time slot. We would buy our ticket for the day we needed and purchase a time but you could catch any train! We even verified one of the days because w me caught a later train. The train has a departure about every 15 minutes and I highly recommend taking it (also it’s super easy if you buy your tickets through the Trenitalia app) Super easy!

I have purchased several Trenitalia train tickets, all of which contain PNR codes st the top, and specific departure and arrival times on my ticket. I just booked train tickets on the Leonardo Express train from Fiumicino to Roma Termini and my tickets have no times listed, only dates. There are also no PNR codes at the top of my tickets. Has anyone else experienced this?

We are group of 7 and were considering purchasing our tickets online before we go. How does each person get through the turnstile if I have the reservation on my phone?
Should I print out or send each person their QR Code?

Check with the ticket booth office at FCO before boarding that it is still valid before going through the barriers. Do not enter without first asking someone as those guards are very keen to issue 50 euros fines. feels like they're on commission to fine people. ALWAYS CHECK BEFORE YOU GET ON THE TRAIN - it's cheaper to buy a replacement than risk a fine.

1) If children under 12 are traveling free with an adult, do they need to travel with any sort of free ticket? Or just the adult ticket is fine?
2) It appears that now you scan tickets at a fare gate to access the platform. Do you also need to put those tickets in the validator machines on the platform to avoid a fine?

First of all you must validate tickets, otherwise you'll be fined. Cannot say about ticket for children( it's better to ask at ticket office ) but for sometimes you'll may be asked have to provide children's ID to proof the age.
