Neighborhood: Colonna
Frantic fashionistas, pedicured politicos, goal-oriented tourists, and on-the-go locals cross paths every day in Colonna, a delightful chaos in the very center of the city. Even though it has some of the city’s loveliest sites—a 2nd century column, Belle Epoque shopping center, and a magnificent Baroque parliament building—Colonna is not just another pretty face, but the cosmopolitan eye of Rome’s cultural storm. Colonna can safely say it has the best of Rome: museums, boutiques, window displays, restaurants, cafes, and people watching.

Nice, small church in Via Sistina
Jul 2020 • Friends
At the end of the 18th century, a mendicant order of the Catholic Church, the Augustinians Recollects founded in Spain in the XVIth century, constituted a hospice in Rome in 1619, to which an oratory was annexed in 1652.
The order advocated a more severe lifestyle and a greater adherence to the teachings of St. Augustine.
In 1667 a church was built on the place of the oratory, on a project by Dominican friar and architect Giuseppe Paglia and it was dedicated to the Spanish saints Ildephonsus of Toledo and Thomas of Villanova.
The baroque façade by Francesco Ferrari, marked by pilasters and ending in a curvilinear tympanum. was added later, in 1795.
The façade has two orders marked by pilasters.
In the lower part opens the entrance portal with two niches on the sides. In the upper one there is a large window flanked by two niches. A tympanum with a decorated central window crowns it.
The interior has a nave and two chapels.
It is elegant but restrained, its decoration showing a skilled use of stucco.
The shallow barrel-vault ceiling has a diagonally reticulated design of intersecting ribs which looks vaguely Gothic and brings to mind some works by Borromini.
Noteworthy, in the first altar on the right, the beautiful, intricate marble relief sculpture "The Nativity" by Francesco Grassia dating back to 1667 and the stucco statues by Antonio Cometti portraying St. Ferdinand III, King of Castile and Leon, St. Louis IX, King of France, St. Rita of Cascia, St.Clare of Montefalco, St.Alypius of Thagaste and St.Fulgentius of Ruspe.
On the main altar is an anonymous painting which depicts the two Spanish saints with Our Lady. This altarpiece has replaced a 17th century large painting with Our Lady with St. Augustine and St. Monica, which has been moved to the left side chapel dedicated to them.
It opens rarely. They have a mass on Saturdays at 19:00.
We recommend to visit it 15 minutes before the mass.

Quiet little church near Piazza Barberini
Oct 2017 • Solo
A small baroque church, with a nave and two chapels. The first altar on the right has a particularly lovely marble relief of the Nativity. No one was there today when I stopped by, so you can just sit in total quiet. Near Piazza Barberini and the Spanish Steps.
