The area
Neighborhood: Esquilino
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighborhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighborhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic center. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.
How to get there
  • Termini • 5 min walk
  • Repubblica - Teatro dell'Opera • 6 min walk

Esquilino is the heart of the city and includes many different realities..to be in this place gives you the opportunity to understand this city all in ones..the rich one ( Merulana_Monti and the rapresentative center), the etnhic one (vittorio), the artistic one (pigneto), the ancient one (all over)and the studend one ( san lorenzo). By foot you will see all that in the time of a beauyiful walk..it means to have Rome in your pocket!!

One of ancient Rome’s famous seven hills, the Esquiline is the site of three must-see churches. St Maria Maggiore, St Praxides (a surviving medieval church with mosaics) and San Pietro in Vincoli with Michelangelo’s statue of Moses.
It is quite a depressed area economically so be careful after dark

Wonderful Wonderful Time
My daughter and I went on & Trip Of a Lift Time. Hope it’s not the Last Time But if it is
It was Fabulous. We used Abercrombie & Kent and We are So So Glad we Did. The travel Director was Emma Bond. The Knowledge Of History is Phenomenal. She is Walking Book Of History. So Informative & A Wonderful Person.

This is a really lovely area. We walked around this area numerous times, during our stay in Rome, as our hotel was nearby. We enjoyed our walks through the streets, and did lots of window shopping, which is definitely cheaper than real shopping! Many shops, cafes and restaurants in the area. The architecture of the buildings is also worthwhile and deserves a second look.

This place was our excellent choice! First, if you are coming there from Termini, it's perfect, 'cause it's like 300m far away, so you can easily find it.
It is also 10 minutes (walking) away from Colosseum and piazza Venezia.
Hostel is new, very clean. The staff is friendly and very kind! :)
I strongly recommend this place!

We stayed here for four nights in a B&B & thoroughly enjoyed it. It is just far enough out of Rome central to be a bit quieter (and cheaper), but close enough to the centre to be able to walk there. Good shops, sidewalk sellers, cafes & restaurants & a few good supermarkets close by to pick up supplies. Very close to Roma Termini - which is very helpful when lugging suitcases there to catch the train. Very happy with our choice to stay here.

As we were staying near Termini Train Station we were more or less in this district of Rome and what a great neighbourhood this is.
Packed with great squares and interesting architecture and with its great location it's close to some of the most famous tourist sites in Rome including the magnificent Colosseum.
On our holiday here I loved to just explore around this district and take in the sites and visit the many pubs, café's and restaurants here.
A great district and if your planning to go to Rome and great area to stay.

So close or so far from the traditional tourist paths at the eternal city,Esquilino is an area with historic theaters, the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and some worth the walk trattorias like Salotto Caronte at via Machiavelli where a nice jazz band, and a rustic -industrial decor create a cozy and special ambient for a glass of wine and some roman inspired appetizers, with friendly staff,a nice stop to continue exploring this area of Roma.Memento audere semper :never forget to those who dare ,and explore Esqulino!

This isn't on the 'tourist trek' but it's worth taking some time to come and see one of the ancient parts of the City that isn't just 'more Roman stuff'.
