About
We arrange private and group tours of the Vatican, Rome and Italy. One of our specializations is getting to the Sistine Chapel ahead of the crowds or being there when no one else in the Vatican! Our Vatican office is very close to the entrance to the Vatican museums. That is where we meet for our Vatican tours, not in or outside a bar or on the steps opposite the entrance to the Vatican museums.

We booked a 2 hour Vatican museum tour and Dina was our guide. She was an absolute delight as a tour guide and spent an additional 1 1/2 hour with us at the saint peters cathedral bringing the total time to 3 1/2 hours. She asked up front if there are any specifics that we would like to cover and ensured that we saw everything that we mentioned. During the tour she gave very detailed explanations that really helped bring the art and the buildings to life! When I return to Rome I will try to book a trip with her again!

We had a semi-private tour of the Vatican. Our tour was conducted by Dina. We found her to be knowledgeable, on time, patient and friendly. She had particularly engaging commentary about the Vatican as a nation-state which added a lot of color to the experience.

We booked a semi-private tour of the Vatican with Italy with us. It's strange that the company still lists disconnected phone numbers and closed offices on their website. Gave me a scare for a minute there but they were responsive by email and the team and tour guide were great.

Worst experience. Booked a VIP Private Morning Tour of the Vatican on Christmas Eve months in advance. I called and emailed multiple times to confirm the tour and hadn’t gotten a response (even going to the office the day before the tour to check and they weren’t open) so should’ve known something was fishy but remained optimistic. Arrived at the meeting location at 7:30 am and waited for an hour to no avail. I called all phone numbers associated with the company and received no response. Not even an email afterwards to apologize. I was finally refunded the amount of the tour over a month afterwards still without a response from the company. TOURISTS BEWARE.

I had a tour booked for July 2020, and obviously our trip was cancelled due to COVID. I emailed the company in May 2020 to cancel our tour and got no response. I tried many times after that with no luck. I tried emailing a new customer interested in booking again and did get a response but then as soon as I told them what I wanted I never heard from them again. I understand that COVID effected everyone and they were probably hit hard, and I gave it a full year because I’d this... but I have yet to get my $200 plus refund.

To be fair, I did a tour with them in 2014 and jt was amazing. This is all because of covid... they just aren’t handling it well for whatever reason.

We booked a Vatican tour for October 2020 - but unfortunately had to cancel the trip due to Covid. We TRIED TO inform them a few months before our trip that we would need to cancel, but they did not respond to an email, or answer the phone. I tried MULTIPLE times to reach them. In spite of the website's stated policy of an 80% refund if you cancel with advanced notice, we got no feedback at all. Nothing. I would NOT trust this company....

This is my second attempt at submitting this review.
I have been told by Tripadvisor that my first one did not meet guidelines for travel reviews. I trust this one will.
My experience is consistent with those who have questioned this company's reputability. Based on our experience with Italy With Us, we are going one step further and seeking compensation via all legal means necessary.
Here is the story:
Several months in advance I booked, based on this website and the New York Times, an after hours tour of the Vatican museums including the Sistine Chapel for May 9th, 2013. Total amount billed and paid in full as of February 26, 2013 was EUR590.00 for two (2). Steep pricing but based on the reviews in this website and the NYT worth it. WRONG.
A couple of weeks prior to the date of the tour I started corresponding again with the company and a certain Kira Simpson who had been my point of contact up to this date. My intent was to establish the protocol for the tour (including scheduling and other related details such as photography considerations, tipping, etc) and to request the possibility of tickets for an audience with the Pope during our time in Rome.
Kira Simpson's last response is dated April 3rd, 2013. After her communication on this date I no longer received any news from Italy with Us and began to worry.
Upon reaching Rome on May 8th, 2013 I called Italy with Us and spoke with a certain Carmen, in lieu of Kira who has was no longer available, who spoke perfect Spanish.
She advised we be at the office 15 minutes before 6 for the paid tour. She stated the tour was very relaxed as only two individuals would be joining us.
We arrived ten before and met another couple standing in front of an empty office. Upon enquiry they had been there for ten minutes. There was absolutely no one to take care of the four of us but for a group of british painters who were working the office space. They were fun but not exactly versed on the Sistine Chapel, the Vatican or Italy With Us for that matter. Not that one could blame them for it.
Five minutes after 6 a lady showed up. She stated that meeting time was 5:30PM outside the Sistine Chapel and we had missed it. The other couple argued that the language in the receipt is confusing to that extent and I related that we were informed otherwise by Carmen. No point in arguing. Also, no point to be made that all communications other than the company's website state nothing to this effect.
She allegedly made two attempts to contact the Vatican (yes, the Vatican) to allow us to join the tour in progress and relented as no one answered. I have heard the same argument from other people trying to reach God. Similar result.
We requested to be included the next day. However, this individual advised that the Vatican Tour takes place sporadically and could not be rearranged. This was, again, first news to us.
We could not speak with anyone else other than the useless individual who met us at 18:05. Well, we did speak to the painters who were uncertain as to whether Italy with Us even existed.
I called four times Italy with Us the next day. No answer. I have filed a complaint with our Embassy to the Vatican and have resorted to other means, aside from Tripadvisor to seek compensation. This includes Italy with Us.
On May 10th, 2013 I wrote Kira Simpson an email stating. After an internal chain of emails to pass the buck it was replied to by Hellen Donegan who appears on this site as owner and has allegedly responded here to other dissatisfied costumers answered back.
Ms. Donegan stated she is very sad about the mixup, can not understand it even though she acknowledges there were four of us there and plainly stated we should resort to travel insurance so as not to lose everything.
Not precisely the answer we were looking for. Then again no services were provided and an alternate solution was dismissed on the account these tours are "few and far between".
We shall continue to seek compensation via the Embassy. This is certainly not a travel insurance issue as I have been advised this is more of a travel scam issue than anything else.
At least be forewarned that this entity's handling of business is not trustworthy nor legitimate and let this opinion on Tripadvisor serve you to make your own opinion.

Let's sum up your complaint first, ticopica. On your own admission you came 5 minutes late for an appointment you say was at 5.45. It is extremely important to be punctual for any tour but especially one as exclusive our after-hours visit. The Vatican opens the main doors once for us, not continuously. Then in a very aggressive manner you began to blame everyone but yourself. Just some details: 1) You were sent an email of confirmation once you had made the payment for your tour - it clearly stated on this email that we meet at our office at 5.30 pm. 2) Kira no longer works for our company, when you didn't hear from her I am surprised you didn't write to one of our emails addresses (info@italywithus.com) , for example. Your main request to Kira was to have audience tickets brought to our office for you. This was done and you picked them up - all other companies charge for this service. 3) Carmen was Kira's replacement and if she told you 5.45 as the meeting time she was wrong - however, I repeat, you were still late for that appointment as well. 4) The "British painters" were Irish and witnesses to the time you arrived. 5) The other couple who were late on May 9th told me they had arrived at 6pm. They contacted me immediately and I arranged a 3-hour private 8am VIP entrance tour for them. This tour would normally cost €350 and I was under no legal obligation to offer them anything but that is not in my nature. 6) The manageress of our office waited at the office until 5.53 for you but then she had to run up and get the people who had arrived on time (8 people) settled into their tour. When she arrived back to the office she met you and tried to help you. You were shouting and behaving in a very aggressive manner so she didn't even manage to offer you the private tour the others went on. We don't have after-hours tours on a daily basis so Maya couldn't put you on another one. 7) We pay the Vatican months before a special visit takes place and there were actually people who couldn't go on the tour you were booked on because there were no spaces left. Our cancellation policy clearly states there will be no refunds. I am always reasonable when someone has a genuine excuse for cancelling a tour but you didn't have. 8) I mentioned your travel insurance with a question mark hoping you would reply to my email and leave an opening for me to try and compensate you even thought I am not legally obliged to do so. In my opinion when you arrive late for an appointment it is best to admit your mistake and show respect for those who try and assist you. It usually works much better, helping to find a solution. I, for one, will never be bullied.

We were very hesitant about visiting the Sistine Chapel, as everyone told us how ridiculously crowded and unenjoyable the experience was. Luckily for us, we stumbled upon Italy With Us. I can't tell you how strange it was to be walking through empty hallways in the Vatican Museum at 8am. Not only were we in the Sistine Chapel a good 45 minutes before anyone else, but we were escorted by Alessandra, who is a fantastic wealth of knowledge and humor. Once in the Sistine Chapel, we were able to spend some time in awe of Michelangelo's incredible frescos, without hundreds of people in our way. While in the chapel, Alessandra sat next to my 2 teenagers and helped them understand some of the scenes they were looking at. The excellent tour continued through the Vatican Museum, which quickly got very, very crowded. To get to St. Peter's, we had to go through the Sistine Chapel again, which was now jam-packed with people. Right then, I knew the tour more than paid for itself. This will be an experience we will likely never forget. My kids are still raving about Alessandra. The communication leading up to the tour with Helen was great also. My only regret is that we didn't get to meet her. She runs a great company. I'm sure their other tours are equally as good.

My husband, daughter and I just returned from Rome. We had done some homework prior to going and found that everyone said the lines were long, the tours crowded and that you should just bite the bullet, spend the money and do an after hours tour of the Vatican. We did just that with Italy With Us. Our guide was Jay and he was absoluely amazing! So much knowledge and ancedotes, it was so entertaining and informative. We got there at 5:00 and met the other people going with us. Our group had 13 people. We walked through the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel and no one else was there until around 7:00 when another group of maybe 15 people showed up. We were never hurried, took LOTS of pictures and had an amazing time. If you can afford it - DO IT!
