The view through the keyhole is stunning! Very picturesque and poetic! The downside is you can’t capture it with your regular phone cam, which I didn’t realize before. We visited during the pandemic In summer so there were only a few people and smartly they had professional cameras. Also, it’s a very long walk uphill, quite far from the main city center area with all the sightseeings. It’s like a one minute experience (because people are waiting for you) so you decide if it’s worth it. We’ve been to Rome many times so we’ve seen the majority of must see things. I think if it’s your first time, this is totally not a priority. But if you drive in the city, you can go up with a car.

If you want to see the dome of St. Peter's Basilica from a very particular position, you have to go to the Aventine Hill, in the square of the Priory of Knights of Malta. The keyhole of the Priory is the destination of a continuous but not massive pilgrimage due to the location which is not in a very touristy area. Usually there is a small queue but very fast. It is a very fleeting emotion, due not only to the charm of spying on something or someone but also from the panoramic view in front of your eye: the Dome of St. Peter in a new and different perspective surrounded by the hedges of the eighteenth-century garden of the Priory. The visit is worthwhile, both day and night, but don't expect anything extraordinary. It may be for you the right opportunity to visit some beautiful churches that are nearby, such as those of St. Sabina, St. Anselmo, St. Prisca, and that one of SS. Alexius and Bonifacius.

Through the Keyhole of the Palace of the Knights of Malta you have a cool look at St. Peter’s framed with beautiful trees. Actually you are looking at three countries at one time. Sovereign Order of Malta, Italy and Vatican City.

Wandered up to find the keyhole after visiting the rose gardens. Only about 6 other people there, so a very short wait to peer through. It really is exactly as you see in the photos 😁
