After having been for years the parking lot for the nightlife between Piazza Farnese and the Portico d'Ottavia, the Cinque Scole square is reborn after the restyling.
it has been established that it will no longer be possible to reach the square by car.
The fountain, designed by Giacomo Della Porta, is now protected by travertine columns connected to each other with an iron bar, in order to keep the daredevils away from the parking lot
The fountain, originally powered by the water of Acqua Felice aqueduct and later by the Acqua Paola, is also known as "Piazza Giudia" or "Giudea", and is considered the main entrance to the Jewish Ghetto from which it was removed in 1880 during the renovation of the area.
It is also called la Fontana del Pianto because of the proximity of the Chiesa del Pianto.
In 1924 the basin and the shaft were first placed near the church of S. Onofrio, in Trastevere, on the Janiculum and then reassembled, in 1930, with the original basin and placed in the current Piazza delle Cinque Scole or Cenci .
Built in 1591 on designs by Giacomo della Porta by the marble stonemason Pietro Gucci, it was made with white marble from the temple of Serapis on the Quirinal Hill.
From the circular basin, supported by a central shaft, the water of the central jet falls, through four masks, into the mixtilinear basin below.
The Piazza delle Cinque Scole derives its name from the fact that in the past there were 5 schools of Judaism in that area.
However, despite the works by the city of Rome to redevelop the square and the fountain, the situation is improving slightly and the Fountain appears to be the worst-maintained work of Della Porta.

Standing in a little piazza often crowded with motorcycles, scooters, and cars is a pretty little fountain. This fountain, by Della Porta, once stood in Piazza Giudia. Gorgon heads on the top basin spit water down into the larger lower basin. The Jewish Ghetto has a fascinating history and is well worth discovering, and it is worth a quick stop to see this fountain when exploring the area.
