Suggestive place that still maintains a certain charm, I came there 45 years ago with my dad and unfortunately now you can no longer go down to the cave for safety reasons even if with some work it is a little more control to rearrange everything. The hand of the Turk can be visited and has a breathtaking view…. It's a shame because it should be valued more. Entrance with offer
He parked near the small shrine.

On 31 July 2024 we visited the split mountain: beautiful and suggestive. It offers a glimpse of the sea. Free entry, you can leave voluntary offers. You can not stop here if you visit these areas. Super recommended! Parking with time disc expiring after 2 hours. You can buy typical souvenirs nearby.

There is a special atmosphere in this place full of legends and suggestions, really not to be missed if you are in Gaeta. The stories related to the split mountain, the hand of the Turk, the bed of St. Philip are original and engaging. The magnificent views.
The offer is free and the small parking free for two hours.

Particular place but unfortunately closed (until August 11th in theory) without any notice published on the sites consulted before the visit. Be careful not to ask for a latte at the bar located before the church because you will be rudely chased away by the owner who claims that the latte is not a serious coffee. Without words.

Truly very suggestive place seen both from land and sea. In addition to the sanctuary we explored the other attractions reported in the area. The only flaw is that the directions to the panoramic point do not indicate either the duration or the distance to travel. Not being equipped with the right shoes (we were coming from the boat trip) we had to give up just over halfway

We arrived armed with good will to visit some places we often hear about. Unfortunately everything was closed, except the church, due to hydrogeological problems and it is not known when it will reopen. It seems that this place has been abandoned by the authorities.

Beautiful quiet and clean town. Full of sites and churches to visit. Unfortunately many churches open on different days and times and it is therefore difficult to see them all
Wonderful visit to the Angevin castle

We had read a little on the Montagna Spacata sight so were excited to see it for ourselves whe we anchored off Gaeta. We walked to the Sancuary from the old harbor which took about 20 minutes. There are 2 splits that can be explored. The first is the path down to the crucifix chapel. There is no fee, but you can leave an offering. Down this path is the sight where an un believing turkish sailor said, "if this is true (referring to the split in the rock occuring at the moment Jesus was crucified) let this rock turn to water." A smooth and now deep hand print is in the rock at that place. A few feet further is the chapel of the crucifix. We found the sight spiritually moving.

The second split that can be explored is Turks grotto, and for a euro, you can scale 250+ steps down to the sea. We had the grotto all to ourselves at 10:00 AM.

The sanctuary is modest, but picturesque and there are good views of the beach of Gaeta and very clean and free facilities just past the gift shop.

Gaeta is one of the best beach that you could visit near Rome o Napoli (Naples), but more than that... There is a way that could bring you up to the hill :-) with amazing view :-) and finally will bring you to the Santuary of "Montagna Spaccata", where the rocks split marking the death of Christ. You will see the spit of the rocks there, called "Grotta del Turco". It's a very unique place to visit and I've just realized that I was the only Asian who had been there that day :-)

It was believed that this mountain split in two when Jesus was crucified. It is also said that, not believing the legend, a Turk man placed his hand on the split mountain and the rock melted around it.

You can go down where the moutain split (it sometimes gets very narrow) with steep stairs, to be greated by the lovely view of the sea. A little chapel built in the 1400's ''hangs over'' the sea, between the massives pieces of rock.
