Terra Murata icon is the heart and cultural centre of the village. Great views - it has been built on a cliff overlooking the harbour. This Benedictine Abbey dates back to the 11th century. Destroyed and rebuilt a few times, this reiteration is from the 16th century. Architecturally it is made up of many different layers.
Inside, the terra cotta and wood nativity scene, built by 18th century pastors is breathtaking. You can take museum tours – I was not able to – where apparently in the library preserved books date back to 1534. Outside the notation above the entrance says. “defende nos praelio” (Defend us in battle)

The abbey church of St. Michael should not be missed on a visit to Procida. Within its walls are some spectacular paintings and sculpture of the 17th to 18th centuries, oratory and hidden chapel in the lower levels. Built onto the edge of Terra Murata, the medieval fortifications built to protect Procida from raids (Saracen and other), it is a unique situation commanding views over the Bay of Naples to Capri.

This is a beautiful old church with stunning views. The church was built in the eleventh century and modified in the 17th and 19th century. The small museum was not open when visited. It is a walk up the hill but worth it for the church and the views.

Up on the hill top by the old prison and the museum. Interesting design and they hand out an English written guide. The entrance fee is a donation. Worth a visit

If you are fortunate enough to make it to Procida be sure to take the C 2 bus to the Ababazia San Michele Arcangelo and tour this marvelous church. The entrance fee is only three euros and well worth the experience and it also includes the ability to visit the attached museum. The bus leaves you off with a short up hill walk to the church......walk down however to the village below and have lunch overlooking this small port of fishing boats.....

A very interesting place to visit while on Procida. We found using the English guide very through and learned so much about what we were seeing. There is much history to be found within this Abazzia. Go and learn for yourselves and you will not be disappointed.

Early October with a warm sum bveaming down from a clear blue sky proved the ideal time to make the long, steady but not unduly steep climb to Terra Murata, the ancient walled town perched high on a hill at the eastern end of the island which was clearly visible as the ferry approached Procida. A former fortress, palace and latterly (until 1986) Alcatraz-style prison form part the old town but the star of the show, so to speak, is the Abbey dedicated to St. Michael, the patron saint of the island and who reputedly miraculously appeared to save the island from the eruptions of Mount Epomeo on the neighbouring island of Ischia. Th statue of the saint on the high altar depicts him with his palms facing outwards, stemming the storm approaching the island. The Abbey is in no way the largest, richest, oldest, most ornate or highly decorated church to be found in Italy or indeed in the Bay of Naples islands but it does have an air about it. Its catacombs, ossuary, library and sundry other rooms and its views over the sea to Ischia and, on a clear day Capri, well merit the time and effort spent in climbing the hill. If, or rather, when you do go don't miss the view over Corricella from the battery, the little church on the hill and the Piazza dei Martri where twelve islanders were executed when the Bourbon rule over the island was restored.

This was an interesting tour. It was only about 3 euros for a guided tour. Ask for an english guide. We arrived at 10am just as it was opening. I think it closes for lunch and reopens in the afternoon. The views are amazing. The history and building were very interesting.

The place is not at its finest but is very interesting. The guide books donot cover it well. There are translated info sheets available but you have to ask. A guided tour woukd have been goid but not available when we went. I have been a few times and the level of information available varies. Some if the objects need explaining and have bizarre past uses.

This was an interesting visit on our tour of the Terra Murata area of Procida. Learning the history of the church was interesting and seeing the interior decor was worthwhile. It doesn't approximate the magnitude of most churches in Italy but it's beauty is still there on a smaller scale.
