Still in use today as a venue for theatrical and musical performance, this theater when reconstructed in 80 BC could seat approximately 5000 spectators. It is a well-preserved example of Teatro’s during the Roman time. An interesting sidelight is the urinal along the walkway

Beautifully preserved large theater in Pompeii. It is open to explore to see the seating and backstage areas. We were able to sit in the seats and try to imagine what it may have been like when it was in use before the eruption. Stage was neat to walk across and to be able to look and see where the actors waited for their moment to perform was very interesting.

We visited the larger of the two theatres, which are located next to each other, in the Insula 7 of the Regio VIII, on the Via Stabiana.

The Teatro Grande was built in the II. century BC. It was heavily damaged during the eruption in 79 AD, only a relatively small portion of the auditorium is original (the white stones), the rest is a reconstruction. Nevertheless, it is a big theatre for 5000 spectators, showing us that in ancient time people loved to watch comedies and tragedies in a theatre.

The inhabitants of ancient Pompeii also held political debates in this theatre.

You have to take a local guide to enjoy this realm. The area and surrounds are not kept in best of state.

On our way to pompeii we checked out this old amphitheatre which did not disappoint! There’s a small part where it shows you the history of the amphitheatre aswell as who’s performed there in the past (eg: pink floyd) which was very interesting!

I love seeing places that I read and learn about in school. This was one of the places and its amazing that after all these years it still exists.

Some of the reviews seem to wrongly feature the Amphitheatre which is some way away from the two theatres by the Stabian Baths.

The large theatre and small theatre are close together and well worth a visit, the large theatre seems to have been restored and is now used for live performances. The marble floor of the central stage is original. The small theatre is far less grand but is more intimate and more original.

Worth a climb up to the top of both to look down. A nice shade woodland grove outside is a good place for a sit down!
