- Richard HLeeds, United Kingdom325 contributionsWell Preserved VillaIt's quite a walk to this villa from the rest of Pompeii. On the way there you pass a few tombs which line the roads which were interesting. The villa has well preserved frescos. I don't think it's worthwhile walking all the way to this villa if you've already seen the other excavations. There is an exit from Pompeii here but then it's a walk back to the train station (Pompei Scavi Villa Dei Misteri). The detour to this villa took around an hour.Visited October 2022Traveled soloWritten April 7, 2023
- JohnRegoParkRego Park, New York1,133 contributionsGreat Roman villa filled with choice muralsThis is one of the best preserved homes in Pompeii. To enter, walk along the path INSIDE the park. Do not exit the park and walk along the road to get in. Although much faster, you soon realize that there is no entrance here. We had to enlist the help of a souvenir stand owner for placed a call to let us in. Don't count on this option. You can however exit into the street from the Villa of Mysteries, and the way back to the train station is a much easier to walk through the exit rather than the tough paths within the park. The Villa does have restrooms for your convenience. The frescoes within the villa are first rate and well worth seeing. It is a bit of a walk from the main sites in Pompeii, but if you plan as the last thing for the day, it mitigates any further walking within the park itself.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 3, 2023

Let's face it, you visit this site because you want to see the "mystery" fresco. As it stands, you can only see two walls of it, because you view it from an entrance in the third wall. There's no way the guides will let you access the entrance where you can see the whole thing. Enormously disappointing.
Other than that, it's fantastic as expected.

In the current Covid-19 one way system, you can absolutely explore Pompeii beyond the set route, especially in the direction of the Amphitheatre, but we failed to find an open route to the Villa dei Misteri. We tried multiple ways, but everything was blocked off.
For those interested, unfortunately we also could not enter the House of the Vettii. We were able to walk up to it and peek at the entrance way (worth it!). The floor was covered and we could see workers inside, so this may have been ordinary scheduled archaeological work, and may have been nothing to do with Covid. It may be temporary, but I was disappointed to not see the Cinnabar.

A 20 minutes walk from the core of Pompei, this complex houses a stunning collection of frescoes still in their places (while many other Pompei frescoes have been translated to the archaeological museum). What can be seen is simply splendid and I hope that in the future visitors will have access to more araeas. An incredible visit.Entrance is included in the general ticket for the site of Pompei. Dirty cheap for what can be seen and visited and so expensive to protect.

As the Villa dei Misteri is located out of the city center of ancient Pompeii, you need to walk a ways to see this gem. The walks takes you along Via Della Tombe with it's funerary architecture - interesting in it's own right. The villa has remarkable frescoes, particularly the dining room depicting a young bride's initiation to the mysteries of the cult of Dionysus. Some of the villa is inaccessible due to restoration.

Another part of the Pompei Architectural park, catering art expositions from the ancient city. Well organ8zed and complementing to the reconstruction of the picture of the Roman city life

The Villa of the Mysteries is one of the highlights of a visit to Pompeii. I went here on my first visit to Pompeii in 1994 after having studied Roman archaeology and loved it. We went back on our visit to Pompeii in 2019. It is extensive, has much that is well preserved and this includes the famous, important, frescoes thought to represent the rites of the Eleusinian Mysteries. It also has a couple of the bodies from the eruption and, being all by itself well off the beaten track of Pompeii, it always seems to be quiet with only a handful of visitors. In 2019, there were hordes of tourists in the usual parts of Pompeii, but almost nobody here. To me, this is one of the must-see places in Pompeii, especially if you are on your own and want to stay away from the hordes.

We have been to Pompeii twice but would like to return to visit House/Villa of Mysteries and Villa di Diomedi which we have not seen (we did see the tombs outside Porta Ercolano though). Can we purchase Pompeii tickets for the villa(s) at the entrance by House of Mysteries versus having to purchase them at the main gate? In your experience, would the line be shorter at the House of Mysteries entrance? Is the "House/Villa" entrance always open during Pompeii's operating hours? If so, this would save us time and enable us to see more as we could bee-line right to House of Mysteries and then go through the Porta Ercolano gate afterwards to see whatever else time permits.

The door by the Villa dei misteri is only an exit.
You have to enter through one of the entrances. The closest one is downhill on the left hand side of the road when exiting the Circumvesuviana station.
You will then have to make your way to the villa.
Go early in the morning before the tour busses arrive

I am taking a cruise and one stop is Naples. What are the nearest tourist attractions to the cruise port? How near is this to the cruise port? Thanks.
I understand Pompeii is close to Naples. What is the best way to travel from Naples-Pompeii?

Cruise ships generally have excursions to Pompei. Be prepared for a hot few hours with lots of other Visitors. I would not recommend going on your own there.
If the cruise offers a trip to Paestum take that in preference to Pompei. The site is much quieter and the temples are out of this world.
If you Stay in Naples There are lots of sights to see. I recommend a trip up to Capo di Monte palace. Easy to get to by bus or taxi. Go in the morning and be sure you see Andy Warhol's Vesuvius and Carravagio' flagellation which is breathTaking.
From there go to see the Catacombs of San Gennaro, which is a short bus ride from Capo di Monte back to Naples centre. Check opening times on line for both attractions.
If you don't have that much time stay in Naples and see the cathedral, the historic centre and the underground world of St Lorenz Maggiore, which takes you back through the Greek, Roman and Medieaval history of the site.
Be very careful around the train station and on public transport in Naples. The pickpockets are masters of their art!!
For a more energetic day You can get a 1 day ticket that covers the whole of Naples by bus and metro M 2 mto Pozzuoli, which has a fantastic Amphitheatre and Roman market as well as the Solfatara, a crater that still sends out steam and bubbling mud.
Around the harbour there are lots of nice restaurants and if you are there before lunch time try and get to the Rione Terra, the old part of the town. The duomo is partly a roman temple an is a great place to visit but it closes at lunchtime so check opening times of the places you want to see.

To get to the villa, do you first enter Pompeii at the main entrance and then walk to the villa or do you walk down the road outside the main ruins to a separate entrance to the villa? Need separate ticket?

It is part of the Pompeian Ruins. At the northwest entrance kind of by itself. It was a pretty nice house of one of the more wealthy residents. There are some great frescoes and there is continuing restoration at this site. I went through it on my way out towards the old Ercolaneum road gate.
