Domus beautifully preserved, belonged to the Vettii brothers, two "liberti" brothers, enriched by the trade in food products. Their new condition of new rich people meant that the house was furnished in a very luxurious way in some cases even in an excessive way, given that the display of wealth was fashionable among the ancient Romans. Well kept are all the excellently preserved environments also the frescoes of the Cupids, remarkable also at the entrance the representation of Priapus with a huge penis, a figure that was of good luck for the ancient Pompeians.
Unfortunately, due to the numerous restorations, not all rooms can be visited.

Not always open, we were fortunate to be able to go into the House of the Vettii as it contains some of the best frescoes in Pompeii, including an incredibly well-endowed Priapus weighing the aforementioned part of his anatomy! Other frescoes include the Punishment of Ixion, Daedalus and Pasiphae, Dionysus and Ariadne, the Punishment of Dirce, Hercules strangling the snakes, Hero and Leander and some rather rude ones in a room adjacent to the kitchen!

Really stepping back in time to such an amazing placing. You can only imagine how beautiful this home once was. It's mind blowing to realize it's age.

This was closed, but with no indication of why or for how long. You can still see some if the paintings through the gates but it was disappointing.

as were sections of the Via d'Abbondanza. The story of why this is is well known but it was a shame.

To get to the House of Vettii requires a walk on the difficult cobblestones that is in one of the farther areas on the site. No signs informed the visitors that the area was closed until you noticed the tape across right as you approached.

This particular residence was very well preserved and shows the latest style of decorations and landscaping that was en vogue just before the volcano erupted. According to our guide Pompeii had suffered from an earthquake almost 20 years previously and therefore a lot of houses and residences had to be rebuilt or repaired. This particular residence was very impressive. I especially loved the frescoes in the eating area of the garden.

Ok. Vetti was one of a set of brothers who lived in Pompei during the historic eruption.
the entrance to this home is unique, because of the painting in the foyer. It's the historic penis painting that survives to this day. Ok. So imagine going into this guys house back in the day, and the first thing you see upon entering the home is the "painting". WOW.
I was so emboldened by this that upon leaving the ruins, I found a nice oil reproduction of the "painting" then had it framed, and now it sits in the entryway to my home... HA!!!

Visited in May 2012. Didn't get to see much of the inside. Mostly walked by the well preserved exterior with its columns and gardens. We were on a tour and some places you didn't get to go into too many rooms or other areas. Gardens were really nice to complement what the house would've looked like back then.

a wonderful example of a house of the gentry in Pompeii. The layout of the house and the fact that most of it is intact was wonderful.
