Not only was this villa damaged in 79AD but it was also bombed in 1943. Fortunate there has been restoration work carried out and it is still being worked on. Many frescoes are damaged but the one you want to see is on the south wall. A walk through the villa, past many small rooms and through an elaborate court yard is the image the house is named after. It looks wonderful. There are rooms with bright yellow and bold red colours still obvious. Some of the pillars are damaged but allows you to see how the structure was constructed. Worth a look!

Beautiful gardens and Fresno - pop in to see; worth walking down to. Note: This is a part of the main Scavi di Pompeii sites, and you don't need an additional ticket to see it.

If you are visiting Pompeii you must see this villa for 2 reasons:
- the main fresco that gives the name to the villa hasn't been restored but just cleaned!
- there is the floor of another more ancient villa (200/300 BC) under it and it is possible to see it.

The House of Venus in the Shell, also known as the House of D. Lucretii Satrii Valentes, was first excavated in the 1930's and later in the 1950's employing the newest archeological methods which explains its excellent state of preservation. It contains several rooms with wall decorations adorned with frescoes such as Apollo and Daphne, Leda and the Swan, and Hermaphrodite and Salmacis. But of course the most famous of them is Venus in the Shell which the house is named after. It is located in the back of the peristyle and, together with two adjoining panels, occupies the entire wall.

A well preserved house with a nice garden area that really gave you a feel for how a good life was lived in Pompeii. Many rooms well decorated.

This is a very large villa that was well appointed in it's day and adorned by some beautiful Fescos such as Venus in a shell.

I had seen the paintings in art books but until Michael our guide discussed them was amazed by not only the composition but the view. The paintings are alive not just a portrait. Not a Rubens but still amazing.

The artwork on the walls have been restored to all the beauty of this well preserved ancient ruin. We stumbled on this on our own without a guide.
