We decided to do a day trip here from Naples rather than on route to Sorrento with the luggage. Train was busy but we knew it would be. It was hot in Pompeii but some sections were shaded. Lots of water stations (fountains to fill bottles). Kids (6&4) did well. We headed to amphitheatre, and winded our way back to spot lots of different art, ruins etc.
It was good. We ignored the map as couldn't make any sense of it. Signposts to main sections are all over anyway.

You can do a self-guide but using a private guide you can skip some of the many buidlings and hit those which have the most interest as well as beauty.

Even though Pompeii is known for the eruption of 79AD the Parco Archeologico comprises a very small area of the “new” Pompeii, that is a vibrant and modern city. Less crowded and cleaner than the larger neighbor Naples.

This is a fascinating historical site. The ruins show insight into a city that existed only 600-700 years ending in 79 AD with the eruption of Vesuvius. The sophistication & lifestyle they enjoyed was quite surprising. Don’t miss the brothel frescoes. Most of the currently available artifacts are in the museum in Naples, which we did not tour, but sounded informative. NYT just ran a great article on the newest developments & expansion that is coming soon. Sorry we missed this upcoming phase!

A great day out of epic proportions and on a scale that has to be seen to be believed.

Allow a good half day for the visit as there is just so much to see and witness.

The staff are all very friendly except those in the on site restaurant, so try and avoid and be self sufficient!

A must if you are anywhere near.

Every year, some two million people visit the ruins of Roman Pompei. They come and go and that’s a pity because the city has much more to offer. Compared to Napoli, Pompei is clean and less hectic. The centre is dominated by the Beata Vergine del Rosario di Pompei (worth a visit). The square in front of it offers nice bars with terraces and in the neighbourhood are several really good restaurants (via Sacra, but also elsewhere). The city is at its best in the evenings, when the crowd gathers in the square!

They have 3 of the original plaster body casts on display we remember seeing in books but most of the artifacts have been moved to the archaeology museum in Naples. Pompei (moderna)
Pompei (moderna) is a world heritage site with a bone chilling history that can be felt even under the scorching sun. If you wander around you can end up in remarkable empty streets.
Wear good shoes, no heels and bring some snacks along. .Do a little bit of research before visiting Pompeii so you have an idea about what happened and how and why everything has been preserved, what the town was used for etc
It is best to use some kind of audio guide so you are aware of exactly what you are looking at as you don't want to miss key items that have helped shape the modern society of today.
We pre-booked fast track tickets for approximately €11 which saved us a bit of time.
It is highly recommendable to get a guide. We got ours near the ticketing office. We paid for 20 each person, child free for a 1.5 hours guided tour. Pompeii is so big that I don’t think a day is enough.
If you're fit, make the hike up Mount Vesuvius. It is well worth the trip to see the steam vents and Napoli laid out along coast. It's quite a hard walk around as the streets are paved with the original paths and it's uneven. It's era but magical.
Prepare for at least 4 hours Wear suitable footwear Fabulous insight to a place most people have heard about Stunning artifacts , very little shade if it is hot so wear a hat in a lifetime must do! Make sure you get on a tour and your guide speaks good English! Makes the world of difference.
The ruins of Pompeii are spectacular and very well done. What I liked most was that only necessary repairs are being made.
Sometimes they replanted a garden but it is restored in a gracious way. It is very big and you can expect to do a lot of walking.
There is working toilets and also food available which isn't priced too badly. .
Overall such an amazing experience. It was great to learn of such an advanced city for its time.
The wagon tracks in the stone streets, the "signs" pointing the way to the brothels, the tiled floors and so much more. It is truly sad how these residents of Pompei died; they lived in such a beautiful place and had created a wonderful little town.
You have access to many different displays in the ruins from fast food joints, local spas, bakery's, brothels, homes etc .I recommend you to see it.
