There are actually two houses of the wild boar. This is a review of the one on via dell'Abbondanza close to Via Stabiana. The other boar house is located along Vicolo della Regina closer to the forum. When we visited this area of Pompeii the gate was closed and locked and you could only look at the entryway which features a mosaic depicting a wild boar in the woods being attacked by two dogs. Around the edge of the atrium is a mosaic of a fortified city with gates and crenellated towers. Even without being able to enter this view of the mosaic is fantastic.

Also known as the House of the Wild Hunt, the mosaics and frescoes in this building are stunning. Frescoes with themes of hunting wild animals and the tiles in the mosaic are extremely small, making for very detailed renderings. There are also some beautiful geometric mosaics. There is a small garden attached to the home as well, that was most likely very well tended when it was occupied.

I would have liked to see it up close but looking at the crowds I understand the need to limit just what we can see.
It gives you pause that time stood still for so long and that this is life as it once was.

As with many of the potentially more interesting buildings in Pompeii, entry is barred by an iron gate. Apparently there are some fabulous frescoes inside; some have been removed and are on display in Naples Archaeology Museum.
Yet another disappointment in Pompeii.

The different buildings sometimes are named for either the actual owner, maybe the function of the building, or they were named after a dominate attribute or characteristic (like a mosaic pattern or fresco theme). In this case, the wild boar being hunted by a pack of dogs was the source for this name.
This find was discovered in the early 1800's and, since then, the mosaic entry has been weathered by time and weather itself. A peek through the gate reveals a beautifully and intricately patterned and running from the front of the entry area through the atrium, around the shallow square pool area, and beyond.
Remnants of stucco painted surfaces can just be detected when looking through the gate (on the right side).
This is as far as one can go here; the gate and a glimpse through. This house does date back to the 2nd century. It is exceptional for the fine condition of the mosaic floors and is (for us) an outstanding example of detailed mosaic work.

The House of the Wild Boar, also known as the House of the Ancient Hunt, is presently closed as is some 80% of interesting sites in Pompeii.
The house was named after a fresco depicting a wild boar hunt which is in situ. It's a fairly large property with decorated plasterwork and mosaic floors.
